Historia
The Roman Republic was the most remarkable state in history. What began as a small community of peasants camped among marshes and hills ended up ruling the known world. Rubicon paints a vivid portrait of the Republic at the climax of its greatness - the same greatness which would herald the catastrophe of its fall. It is a story of incomparable drama.

Top notch production with great story- not just the last gasp of the Republic under Octavian but the 200 years before- transforming Rome from Republic to Empire one ego at a time.

Historia
Jim Dixon has accidentally fallen into a job at one of Britain's new redbrick universities. A moderately successful future in the History Department beckons if he can survive the probationary year. Not the least of his problems is the necessity to keep in with his eccentric Professor Welch, who although detested and despised by Jim, has sufficient influence in the faculty to affect the continuation of his appointment.

It was ok- proto Seinfeld
Revisado: 06-13-16
Mildly amusing British comedy. The anti-hero is deplorable as are the other characters. Like Seinfeld, but not as funny.
Good performance and voices.
Catch22 and Confederacy of Dunces are so much better.

Historia
Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

If you could sum up The Story of Human Language in three words, what would they be?
Engaging, fast-paced, thought-provoking
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Story of Human Language?
Listening to how words change- consonants weaken, endings are dropped, then hearing example after example of that in English and other languages.
Any additional comments?
Well produced. Good material. Fast-paced. This was a real pleasure. I am sick of the trumpet fanfare and canned applause, however, at the beginning of every "lecture".

Historia
In An Enemy We Created, Alex Strick van Linschoten and Felix Kuehn debunk this myth and reveal the much more complex reality that lies beneath it. Drawing upon their unprecedented fieldwork in Afghanistan, as well as their Arabic, Dari, and Pashtu skills, the authors show that the West's present entanglement in Afghanistan is predicated on the false assumption that defeating the Taliban will forestall further terrorist attacks worldwide.

Historia
Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Indefatigable genius
Revisado: 03-29-16
If you could sum up Napoleon in three words, what would they be?
From middle class scholarship student to emperor, on four hours of sleep a day
Who was your favorite character and why?
Wellington... ha ha. Napoleon II, the King of Rome.
What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Excellent pace and enunciation. Very well read. Good sound quality, and I'd bog down with the French names if I had to read it from a book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I wonder if Napoleon is the first head of state, in all human history, to be the product of (sort of) public education (a scholarship program for the sons of impoverished nobility, actually, but pretty close).
Any additional comments?
You can go 60 and 4 in battles, but if the last three are losses at Moscow, Leipzig and Waterloo, get your second home on St. Helena ready.
This is a fascinating book. Napoleon was a military and political genius- flawed only, perhaps, by over reliance on his relatives, and choosing England as an enemy.

First person history brought to riveting life
Revisado: 06-11-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is as good as it gets. Amazing content from a man in and behind the scenes of the biggest tragedy in human history.
What other book might you compare The Second World War to and why?
Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, but this is better.
Which scene was your favorite?
Ribbentrop delaying Chamberlain from his job the eve the Nazis invaded Czeckoslovakia? Hitler testing France and Britain again and again and them not seeing the growing danger?
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Why couldn't Britain see it coming?

With millions of copies in print around the globe, it has attained the status of a vital and enduring classic.

The only way to avoid a repeat of history
Revisado: 02-05-14
What made the experience of listening to The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich the most enjoyable?
The narrator is superb, and the content chilling. As German democracy, then Austria, then Czechoslovakia and then Poland fell, I wanted to scream "Can't you see what's happening?"
Hitler was insane. That would be a three word summary of a 57 hour book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Claus von Stauffenberg- a hero. When someone finally stands up and says, enough: "This must stop even if it costs my life." That's a hero. This part of the book read like fiction.
Which character – as performed by Grover Gardner – was your favorite?
Molotov is pretty good. A calculator in the line of great Soviet chess players, many moves ahead of his competition.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The jewish revolt in Krakow moved me to tears.
Any additional comments?
Give it a listen, you won't regret it. Only criticisim is Shirer's homo prejudices. Maybe a sign of the times, but he ably shows the Nazis to be thugs, criminals and psychopaths. Didn't need to call them perverts, too (without mentioning the "perverts" on the Allied side).

Best first person war autobiography I've ever read
Revisado: 12-18-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. The details and horror and numbness and waste of war made clear by the author.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
I liked one narrator, but not the other. I was really unsure why it kept skipping back and forth. This is my only major criticism of the book.
Any additional comments?
Sledge does appear to be without flaw in this telling. After awhile, I wondered "What noble thing will he do now?" but it was a great book overall.

Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Funny author who loves his subject
Revisado: 12-18-13
What made the experience of listening to The History of Ancient Egypt the most enjoyable?
Brier gets you to grasp the vast amount of time Egypt covers. An "interim" lasts longer than the U.S. has been around. And he does it with humor and pleasure.
What did you like best about this story?
The mummies!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
His story of Cleopatra made her human to me. Unbelievable detail.
Any additional comments?

As Carl Sagan did for astronomy and Brian Green did for cosmology, Walter Lewin takes listeners on a marvelous journey in For the Love of Physics, opening our eyes as never before to the amazing beauty and power with which physics can reveal the hidden workings of the world all around us. "I introduce people to their own world," writes Lewin, "the world they live in and are familiar with but don't approach like a physicist - yet."

More like an autobiography with some physics
Revisado: 12-18-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Not really. There are better books out there that don't meander about random topics in physics and autobiographical details.
What could Walter Lewin and Warren Goldstein have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Write about physics, or write about your life, but don't randomly cover both. I don't really care about why you had to pay two guilders for coffee in 1960 or whatever.
Which character – as performed by Kent Cassella – was your favorite?
The leprechaun at the end of the rainbow... It doesn't exist!
Was For the Love of Physics worth the listening time?
No.
