A Deeply Touching Essay of An Old Soldier

As a former soldier myself and having experienced on a much smaller scale and over a shorter period of time some of the same issues and feelings expressed in this deeply painful story, I come away deeply appreciative of the skill of this author. His descriptions of the relationships between soldiers developed by shared experiences both in combat and during the sometimes long periods in between actions. I thoroughly enjoyed and at the same time appreciated the author’s efforts to explain how confusing and frustrating it is to engage in such experiences on what often seems to be an unending struggle at many levels on an unceasing basis.
Well done in every respect!

One of the best sea stories I have had the pleasure of hearing

Mr Helprin has authored one of the best, if not delightful, stories of the US Navy of recent years. He has captured the essence of what it means to serve and command a naval war ship under extreme circumstances. The side story of his romance with an incredible woman of great grace and fine appearance only enhances the overall story.

As an Army Veteran of that time I can still recall the hostility exhibited by the American people of that era. It was more than just disgusting it was shameful!! I am proud of my service but I can well remember the mood of the public and the disgraceful manner in which they conducted themselves. Nothing will ever erase that period from my mind.

I actually enjoyed the entire book and especially the closing sequence. Great plot with very different characters and an occasional interesting subplot. Great performance by the narrator all the way through.

This is a book about love and family that is simply remarkable

I can only say that I regret not having read this book earlier. It is simply put the very best book about family and the love that in the end holds all of us together. I am in awe of the skill of the writer to tell the story in such a way as to avoid the cliches that so often make stories of mixed race either ugly or downright painful.

While the story was a bit far-fetched at times it was both interesting and quite inspirational at times. I found myself quite often wishing that I could check into the Kindle book to clear up an especially complicated section, but to my great disappointment it’s apparently not available…at least I was unable to find it!

A Story of Men At Sea and Their Own Stories as Well

I believe this book to be the best and most comprehensive story of both men at sea and their own personal backgrounds of the Second World War. I read it many years ago when I was a much younger man, but this reading and listening have made the story a hundred times more meaningful and memorable than the first reading by a long shot. The Narrator and his most excellent narration added immeasurably to the story for me and I salute his performance a hundred times.
