Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Good to Know
Revisado: 07-26-24
I appreciate how honest he is about the culture from where he came; and for how he impresses as being informative in contrast to potentially "cramming it down your throat" so to speak as to try to get you on the bandwagon. This I find rare and refreshing as many in the spotlight have a platform to sell and do so with few boundaries. I find this read to be a story of one who overcomes his circumstances yet embraces it as being the formula of who he is- and especially how adamant he is to never forget from where he came. I sense a genuine appreciation and admiration for sure, especially for his MaMaw and PaPaw.
The loyalty he displays is powerful.

Historia
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

The Afghan people/culture
Revisado: 05-24-24
This book was a page turner. It was hard to stop once I started listening.
This author is quite gifted with story telling and building. Character development is top notch. I went to bed at night thinking about the women in this story- as if I were having tea with them. It just became a part of my day and routine, which I so appreciate in a good read. Emotionally, I was totally invested in these women and their children and their trials and tribulations. Oh the tears I cried for them. I would recommend this to anyone who can appreciate and invest in a very well- written story.

Historia
"Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated." With her grandmother's taunt, Louise knew that she, like the biblical Esau, was the despised elder twin. Caroline, her selfish younger sister, was the one everyone loved. Growing up on a tiny Chesapeake Bay island in the early 1940s, angry Louise reveals how Caroline robbed her of everything: her hopes for schooling, her friends, her mother, even her name. While everyone pampered Caroline, Wheeze (her sister's name for her) began to learn the ways of the watermen and the secrets of the island.

Slow to Capture Me
Revisado: 12-20-23
The storyline was a bit slow in keeping my attention, but staying with it, the plot thickened and kept my interest. By the near end of the work, I was invested, only for it to quickly wrap up as it did.
I grasped the title’s symbolism and meaning well enough, however would have appreciated a more dramatic style in getting it done. I like time pieces, so WWII era is always good with plenty to choose from wartime rationing to awaiting the troops to come home to the uncertainty of global conflict.
I am glad I read it although did not connect with it as I did the author’s other work, “Bridge to Terabithia”.

Vera is the phoenix rising from the ashes
Revisado: 10-17-23
This book had some true nuggets of wisdom and foresight that met with my current state of mind. In particular, a young woman surviving a horrific tragedy, digging deep into her own sense of strength and courage in order to overcome and find her way in the world. I found it to be interesting in how the author described the aftermath of the city and its ruins as well as the response of the people to their circumstances. I gave it 4 stars due to a few things that were left unclear and confusing. The reader of the story was pretty good but some of her impressions were not so great which took away from the story’s captivity of the imagination. Other than that, it was time well spent.

Revelatory
Revisado: 07-01-23
Reading this book took me back in time to another era of past hardships and survival experiences. It tapped into my pioneer spirit of how we can rise out of the ashes from the most horrible circumstances, The women in this story depict us all in how we can tap into that power within to overcome the most tragic obstacles.
I was absolutely enamored by the history, the storyline and especially the characters who brought the message to life. I would say that it was time well spent.

Glad I Stuck With It
Revisado: 02-14-23
This book took me about 2-3 months to complete but I am glad to have invested the time. It became my companion while traveling, cooking, cleaning and relaxing.
I most appreciated the twists and turns of the plot and how they were all interwoven with the various characters. I found this to be stimulating as I was constantly trying to connect the dots so to speak.
I am proud to mark it off of my list of classic literature. If you have nothing but time and patience and a flair for complex plot, I suggest going for it!

Mind blowing
Revisado: 09-28-22
This book took me away to a time from the past reminding me of stories that my grandparents told about their upbringing in the south and how life was during the Great Depression era. Having an intrigue of those times brought this work all the more to life as I learned more about orphanages and how poor families were broken apart due to evil intentions and greed.
I really enjoyed listening to each actor or reader and how the two storylines intertwined and eventually caught up to one another for the “Big Revelation” or mystery. I found myself as I listened to this book, becoming immersed in the story and continually trying to figure out the connections and who was who.
I highly recommend this read to those who have an appreciation for the past generations and their stories, however brutal or perverse in nature,
that need to be told and passed down, so that we are reminded of those
whose burdens will not be in vain and that we will fight for the justice of the ones whose lives have been lost and/or forgotten.
I wanted to hear some type of conclusion on the character Camellia as well as the baby brother Gabian. I finished the book wondering what happened to them, especially Camellia. I wanted to think that perhaps she was given to a family as a worker at least, instead of thinking that she was killed. I also wanted closure on the time when Mr. Sevier confronted Georgia Tann. Other than that, I loved this book and would read it again.

Kennedy, a Green Beret, decorated Army sniper, and UFC headliner, has tackled a bull with his bare hands, jumped out of airplanes, dove to the depths of the ocean, and traveled the world hunting poachers, human traffickers, and the Taliban. But he’s also the same man who got kicked out of the police department, fire department, and as an EMT, before getting two women pregnant four days apart, and finally, been beaten up by his Special Forces colleagues.

Weirdly Truthful
Revisado: 07-02-22
After listening to Tim on the Rogan Podcast, I wanted more of this guy’s message. I was able to listen(read) this book in just a couple of days. His story, his brutal honesty and integrity is so refreshing! I absolutely enjoyed reading this work and will be sharing it with others. Although Tim’s reading is a bit chunky with the stop and go, it did not affect me in a negative way as a reader. I truly appreciate him sharing what all he has gone through. It has left me asking more questions about where I fit in during these very chaotic times. And I truly want to plug in and make a difference, whatever that means and looks like. Thanks Tim, it was nice to meet you and I hope to hear more from you in the future.

Love G.Iles, but didn’t love this read
Revisado: 06-01-21
As a fan of Greg I., I appreciated the characters in the book as well as the setting of it being in the modern day south trying to preserve the rich past, but it was a bit dark and perverted for my taste. I did finish the book hoping that justice would be served and good would triumph over evil, which it did, but did struggle with some of the content, which distracted from the plot in my opinion. And this is just one opinion of course. Having read several of his novels, this would be rated the lowest for me. I just struggled with the plot of horny teens getting it on with grown men who have families. Just not into that. Would not recommend to anyone who savors taste in a good read. Just simply disappointed.

Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

A touching story of man vs nature vs himself set in a time and place from the past. A simple time, yet such a complicated time from history. I not only read(listened) to this work but experienced it as if I was transported to the past. It was a definite great story and I will be reading more Hemingway because of it.
