While I am sure others find this a treasure [see other reviews], I did not. It was neither ironic, witty, funny, nor engaging. It was just plain boring. It put me to sleep every time I turned it on.I found the characters very dull and unimaginative. The pace drags so that it takes 15 min to get thru a scene that could be done in 5... and I still have no idea what happened to John Bold. Aaaah - where's good ole Jeeves when you need him???

Historia
The date is 1966 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now, and the Republic, created by the human race - but not yet dominated by it - finds itself in an all-out war. They stand against the Teroni Federation, an alliance of races that resent Man's growing military and economic power. The main battles are taking place in the Spiral Arm and toward the Core. But far out on the Rim, the Theodore Roosevelt is one of three ships charged with protecting the Phoenix Cluster.

I am rather impressed.....
Revisado: 09-03-08
I originally passed over this title as dull sounding. Finally, after running very low on any interesting looking volumes, I decided to try it.And was I surprised! It's not very cerebral for sure, but it IS entertaining. Just what I like when I'm suffering from burnout - an escape. As I listened, the writing just started to sound better. The characters grew on me...well, except that Chief of Security...and by the end I found myself engrossed. The fence David Copperfield is a real hoot and an engaging character. He lives in his own world and is a great comic relief. The hero, Wilson Cole, is no James Kirk or even a Jean Luc Picard, but he is a rogue, a scoundrel, and totally believable. Overall, I really liked it. So much so, that I immediately bought the 2nd and 3rd volumes. AND I'm hoping for more!

One word: BORING
Revisado: 06-23-06
I found nothing to like about this book. It was boring. There was no clear plot to me. The narrator's voice put me to sleep. It was sluggish and too finely detailed on things that did not matter in the slightest. There was no character introduction or developement. Just who is this Molly and how did her death fit into this???? I was not impressed.

When Chaz Perron's wife discovers that he is running a scam (posing as a marine biologist to doctor water samples so that an agribusiness tycoon can continue illegally dumping fertilizer into the Everglades), he pushes her overboard from a cruise liner. Unlucky for Chaz, Joey survives clutching a bale of Jamaican pot. Rescued from the Atlantic by a former police officer, Mick Stranahan, she decides not to report him but instead haunt and taunt him, with Mick's help, by playing dead.

THIS is great entertainment. Great fun and lots of laughs. It is light and easy to follow. The narrator has his moments. But, overall, it was very enjoyable. Enjoy it for the pure entertainment factor. Don't critique it - don't analyze it. Just enjoy it. This is my first Carl Hiassen book. I just hope his others are as enjoyable!

Historia
Four thousand years ago, a stranger's death and his ominous "gift" of gold precipitates the building of what will become known as one of mankind's most remarkable achievements. Stonehenge catapults us into a powerful and vibrant world of ritual and sacrifice at once timeless and wholly original. This is an epic tale of patricide, betrayal and murder; of brotherly rivalry; and of the never-ending quest for power, wealth, and spiritual fulfillment.

I can rate this book in ONE word, Bob, .....
Revisado: 05-27-05
BORING! It was too long and too many adjectives. The extreme overuse of such words as "filthy, matted, dirty, etc" bored me to tears. A reader does not need to be told every single time a character enters that he is still filthy or whatever, especially with multiple adjectives. The story dragged seriously and is really a rehash of an untold number of previous novels...most of which are infinitely better written. It plods like a great elephant in mud.

The twin offspring of a high priestess and a dragon hold the key to man's future, but their identity must be held secret, even from each other, until they have matured. Revisado: 08-20-04
I believe this installment was more boring than the first book. It was very predictable. Again, the characters were flat. As a writer myself, I found myself imbellishing both the story and characters as I found them extremely lacking. The story was just so "read that dozens of times." There was nothing to make it unique or interesting. I stifled many yawns listening to this one. I may give up on the series after this, but then I would like to see if my predictions of what will happen in the third book are correct. That should be pretty boring too unless the author gets an imagination prior to writing it.

Here is a world where men and dragons coexist amid political intrigue and dark magic, where the uneasy balance of power between the two is on the verge of becoming undone, threatening to unleash waves of destruction that will pit humans against humans as well as dragons against men for the domination of the world. Humanity's very survival is at risk.

Not the worst, but not the best either.
Revisado: 08-20-04
Overall, I thought the story was very weak and the characters very cardboard. If I had heard the lesbian relationship between Melisand and Belona referred to one more time, I would have screamed. There was way too much reference to it that had nothing to do with the story. The reader does not have to be reminded in every sentence. The action was quite boring. There were several times in which actions were dragged out ad nauseum. I was not impressed.

Imagine that there are American MIAs who chose to remain missing after the Vietnam War. Imagine that there is a family in which four generations of strong, alluring women have shared a mysterious connection to an outlandish figure from Japanese folklore. Imagine just those things (don’t even try to imagine the love story) and you’ll have a foretaste of Tom Robbins’s eighth and perhaps most beautifully crafted novel--a work as timeless as myth yet as topical as the latest international threat.

This first volume of the Earthsea Cycle is an adventure story, a Quest, a tale of a proud, incautious boy who meddles too early with the Dark. It is a pure fantasy telling about a real thing: a boy coming into his power and his manhood...coming of age.

Easily ties for THE worst book ever written.
Revisado: 04-23-04
The overall impression of this worthless exhibit of no talent, is dark and foreboding. It is not entertaining. It is not fun. It is too long and drawn out and down right boring. I don't think it was even particularly well-written. The story, and I use the term loosely, is very haphazard and half the time it is buried beneath so much darkness that it makes no sense. It's very gothic to me.

Compex, innovative, and deeply moral, the Earthsea Cycle fantasy sequence has been compared to the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, and has helped make Ursula LeGuin one of the most distinguished fantasy and science fiction writers of all time.

A solid ZERO.
Revisado: 04-23-04
This is by far one of the worst books I have ever read or listened to. If I had realized that the author was the same as the wizard of earthsea (which ties for THE worst), I would never have purchased it. There is no plot. It is very dark and ominous. It is boring. The reader is absolutely awful. Her voice drones on and on like a psychology professor. There is nothing in the way of interesting anything. No descriptions. No dialogue. There is no setup for a plot. Overall, it really stinks. A solid zero on the scale - too low to rate. I will never read this author again. Two majorly awful books is my limit.
