Historia
A smart and funny book by a prominent Harvard psychologist, which uses groundbreaking research and (often hilarious) anecdotes to show us why we’re so lousy at predicting what will make us happy–and what we can do about it. Most of us spend our lives steering ourselves toward the best of all possible futures, only to find that tomorrow rarely turns out as we had expected. Why? As Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert explains, when people try to imagine what the future will hold, they make some basic and consistent mistakes.

Groan.. God deliver me from this..
Revisado: 03-02-25
The author has probably 1 or 2 good points.
Just enough for a one hour podcast, or maybe a chapter in a textbook.
Instead of sticking to this, we are given details of innumerable research studies (which involve graduate students, mostly it appears), to make the same damn point again and again. By the time he hammers home a point, I actually forget what the that point was. Unless you listen to each and every chapter continuously in its entirety, ie with no breaks, you will lose the plot of that chapter.
Whatever point he has to make overall is lost in the morass of his data. If I had been reading this as a written book, I would have quickly jumped to the end of each chapter and be done in a few minutes.
Some of the 'wittiness' and humor is ok, but most seems rather contrived.
On the whole, I wish someone had given me a Cliff Notes version of this; and saved me hours and hours of wasted listening.

Highly disappointing; repetitive; move on..
Revisado: 02-08-25
I wanted a book that told me how to lead my life so that various aspects could conform to the law (eg, if I have an accident, how should I behave, etc). This is NOT that book. The entire message can be summarized in her formula "BICAT". She takes many scenarios, and beats them to death with this formula. After some time, I kept asking myself... is this how lawyers think? Maybe so, but as a lay person, I was expecting more. After getting to hear her explanation of BICAT in the first 30 minutes, I did not learn anything new after that. I kept on listening though, hoping for some pearl to drop later in the book, but none appeared !

Adrift in a raft after a deadly ship explosion, 10 people struggle for survival at sea. Three days pass. Short on water, food, and hope, they spot a man floating in the waves. They pull him in. “Thank the Lord we found you,” a passenger says. “I am the Lord,” the man whispers. So begins Mitch Albom’s most beguiling and inspiring novel yet.

false pretenses and mostly BS
Revisado: 01-08-25
The premise is interesting.. however, the story is mostly bull.
We are led along the story by giving us breadcrumbs that promise a major reveal of a major tragedy/disaster/puzzle. However, every single thread unravels at the end. The story drags on and on.. has too many characters playing unnecessary roles (why bother with the Policeman character?)... except as people whose souls have to be saved.
The entire story ends in a completely implausible ending (someone survives 1 whole year in a life raft, really !!!??), with almost all of the preceding events shown to be a hallucination.
Halfway I wanted to give up, but saw the wonderful reviews, and thought I would keep listening hoping for redemption.. all the way till the incredulous ending.
Gimme a break.
If this is supposed to increase faith in God, then ..... God help us !!!

What on earth is going on?
Revisado: 10-19-24
Great story line prospect. However, the story keeps on dragging on, and on and on.
After what appears to be a great start, the story moves onto the time the protagonist is off to Jupiter. The behavior of people on the shuttle seems so improbable (especially after all the technical details are so well thought out), that it is mind boggling. How can you let such amateurs on a journey where little things can make the difference between life and death ? Ok, maybe that is part of the story..
But, there are so many side tracks and blind alleys, that even after really WISHING I could go through this, and figure out the end, I gave up listening halfway.
Disappointing.
Every day, I would listen to a bit hoping that the train would start again; but no.. it just kept on going in circles, and circles.. and since life is short, and I have other things to do, I gave up.
This is the kind of story that, if it were a book, you could/should skip a hundred pages, and go on, and not miss what happened in those pages..difficult to do that in an audiobook.

Every one with kids SHOULD listen to this !
Revisado: 09-16-24
Cannot recommend this audiobook enough. I wish I had listened to this when my child was much younger.
Still, its never too late. Even if your child is a late teen, please listen to this.
The resources were good too.. worth exploring various websites and books she recommends.
If you follow her advice, children will be more prepared to understand their own bodies. Her discussion 'normalizes' alternate sexual practices that humans NORMALLY have - I can understand some people feeling that she is encouraging this. She is not. She is merely advocating allowing your children to become the adults that they are going to comfortable being.
Wonder how much pscyho-pathology in the world would be avoided if parents did not try to mold their children into rigid stereotypes, and did not allow their child to express themselves.... in the environment now where 'abstinence' is being promoted, I can see how some of the other reviewers were upset.

All John Rain wants is to get out of the killing business. But with his discretion, his reliability, and his unique talent for death by "natural causes," no one is willing to let him just retire. So when an old nemesis from the Japanese national police force comes to him with a new job - eliminate Murakami, a killer even more fearsome than Rain himself - Rain knows he can't refuse. Aided by an achingly desirable half Brazilian, half Japanese exotic dancer he knows he shouldn't trust, Rain pursues his quarry into the heart of a shadow war between the CIA and the yakuza.

Writer is the reader !
Revisado: 06-12-24
I love the details of Japan, history/people/culture/food that is woven into each story. The protagonist, Rain, is an assassin who is in the 2% of people who can kill without remorse (according to the book), and is a ruthless assassin. The storyline is good. The action is fantastic. If you were to want a book to listen to as you drive cross country, you have found the right book.
However, one wonders how such a ruthless assassin has such a strong and good moral code. Also, reading about how he has to take precautions each time he leaves the house to make sure he is not followed (SDR) makes you wonder if his life is worth living as it stands. Such philosophical musings aside, I think this is a good book. Definitely worth listening to if you like the espionage/assassination genre of books. Also, the writer is the reader, and does a good job with the Japanese pronunciations.
The good guy wins, and gets the girl(s). All in good fashion.

Best performance ever, ever !
Revisado: 01-26-22
I loved the story.. but a lot of the credit for the beauty of the audiobook goes to the narrator.
I have NEVER ever heard a more engaging female reader - Paige Lyle has a voice of gold. Her reading is so engaging that I was mesmerized by her on so many occasions..., her enunciation was so clear and inflections in her voice were so appropriate that her voice conveyed all the emotion that the writer meant to put into the text, but would not be able to convey to a person who is 'merely reading' the novel.
Wow, to the story.
And a double-wow for the performance by the actors.

There’s been a breakthrough on the campus of Caltech. A discovery. An invention. One so startling and surprisingly sinister that the inventor can’t tell a soul. Precariously poised at the center of the action is Victoria Pixler, a bioengineering student with a tragic past, a passionate quest, and a brilliant mind. After a decade of dedication, she’s just completed her life’s work only to have her dream shattered and her career terminated - by the least likely suspect.

Nice work of fiction - very interesting.
Revisado: 09-13-21
Loved the book. This is my second book by the same author. So, far he did not disappoint.
The premise is simple (though likely impossible) - you can read other people's minds with a new technology... now, what do you do? If this becomes widely available, then, chaos will ensue. The book ends up showing a clash between 2 groups with a contrasting philosophy about how to use it. There ensues a wild ride - murder, assassins, etc.
Overall, if you are able to suspend belief a little about the techniques/methods used, it is a very entertaining book.
Highly recommended.

A must for everyone.... in your 20s!
Revisado: 08-29-21
I love Great Courses lectures; and while most of them are 'academic', this one is something EVERYONE needs to listen to, as it will help you with your finances. Almost all of the stuff he talked about, I had heard/read before, but this was well organized, and set in a way that will help everyone (novices, or someone mid way in their career like me) understand how the world of retirement finance works. The website he has (he mentions that in the book) : moneytoolbox.com is extremely useful. It does not matter if you do NOT intend to retire early... the advice in this book is very good.
Everyone should read/listen to this in their early 20s, so they can take steps to ensure financial stability later on. Financial literacy is rather poor in most adults, and this book is a big step in the right direction.
Highly, highly recommended, even if you thing you know everything about how you will retire in comfort.
PS: This book has a lot of information along the financial equivalent advice of 'eat your veggies', 'stay on the straight & narrow', etc... so this will not teach you have to make a million dollars in 2 weeks, so you can retire quickly (which never happens, btw).
