A Bit Of All Right!
Revisado: 03-04-19
As a die-hard devotee of all things Plum, I was I am pleasantly surprised to say Jeeves and the King of Clubs is a tasty young smoked offering worthy of the master. Pithy humor, absurd yet ingenious plot twists, many of the well loved (and some despicable) characters, it's all there! Its not as stellar a work as from the pen of PGW himself, and even if it were, I would feel duty bound to deny it, but it is dashed good stuff. Well done!!!

I'm the worst ever critic for Jungle Book reading
Revisado: 07-06-17
I've cherished this story since childhood, when I fell in love (Or hate as the case may be) with the Jungle People. I clung to it in young adulthood as I began to realize it's deeper meaning, and now I'm damn near 60,and the power and magic of the telling of these stories of love and Law, revenge and wisdom have not weakened in the least. I know every word by heart. I have to have it in audio form now instead of reading it myself, but every now and then, I still have to have it!
So when I say Mr Batchelor has nailed the spirit of these tales you may believe me. His voices and inflections are spot on, and those who love Jungle Book as I do can safely trust your ears to him!

Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion

Narración:

Historia
Originally published in 1922, Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion caused a stir throughout the scientific and religious communities. Émile Coué's assertions that the repetition of certain phrases, or mantras, can have a positive effect on the health and happiness of an individual challenged the existing reliance on chemicals and clergy. However, his theories, which are laid out in straightforward detail in his work, were solidly based on his firsthand experiences with patients, including such stalwart methods as conditioning therapy and the placebo effect.

I always wanted to know more about Mr. Coue, but found the reading tiresome. The narration by Horowitz was very well done, and it was obvious he cared about the subject matter. I intened to listen to this many times, a keeper!

Historia
Without creative powers mankind would still be living in caves, without any new ideas or advancement, so it is important to understand and harness this power. There is no better person to teach us how than Thomas Troward. He was a major pioneer in the New Thought movement, which bridges the gap between the inner world of thoughts and the physical universe. With command of your creative powers you can manifest your potential and offer unique things to the world that are waiting inside of you.

Narrated by Thomas Troward (1847-1916)? Really???
Revisado: 09-30-15
No, we are not so fortunate as to have Judge Troward come from the Great Beyond to read this to us. This narrator sounds exactly the person who read Troward's "The Law and the Word". See my review for the former, I'm too dispirited to go over it all again. A thoroughly inappropriate direction of the reader's talent makes this a very difficult listen.
I don't know anything about Audible's vetting process as far as accepting recordings to be published, but whoever rubber-stamped this should be made to listen to it at least once, as apparently no one (except perhaps the reader's doting significant other) has bothered to do.

Historia
Written in 1917, The Law and the Word is a hard-to-find work by Judge Thomas Troward, a pioneer in mental science. Troward's writings and lectures greatly influenced Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science and writer of The Science of Mind.
This book was one of the first to combine thought energy, scientific reasoning and testing, and creative power, and to see the interconnection of the three.

LIsten first! I wish I had!
Revisado: 09-30-15
Goodness knows I wish this young reader all the best, but Thomas Troward was NOT a good choice for his artistic style. Troward's writing is extremely deep and ponderous. It takes all you have just to keep up with the somewhat elaborate and old-fashioned vocabulary. But what he has to convey is so important, it's worth the effort.
I think a man or woman with a more mature voice, well versed in proper pronunciation at least of the English language, let alone the French and Latin quotes Troward throws around, (and without the impediment of what sounds like an occasional smack at chewing gum or perhaps a lollipop), would have been a better choice.
Mr Cousin's talent would have been better served with far, far lighter fare than this book. As a young character in any of Dicken's lighter works, or a Wodehouse-style domestic, or a even a Hobbit, he would shine. But letting him at Troward was a judgement error of epic proportions.
The fact that I must listen to this many times to get the true gist of what the author was trying to teach makes it that much more trying.

Historia
It is 1803, six years since Elizabeth and Darcy embarked on their life together at Pemberley, Darcy’s magnificent estate. Their peaceful, orderly world seems almost unassailable. Elizabeth has found her footing as the chatelaine of the great house. They have two fine sons, Fitzwilliam and Charles. Elizabeth’s sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live nearby; her father visits often; there is optimistic talk about the prospects of marriage for Darcy’s sister Georgiana. And preparations are under way for their much-anticipated annual autumn ball.

Attention P&P Lovers! Don't waste your Credit!!!
Revisado: 12-13-11
If you are a Pride and Prejudice junkie, you will be horrified at seeing the P&P crew thrown into this unnecessary mess of a story. The subtle humor of the P&P tale is positioned awkwardly beside the abject horror, untouched by any possibility of laughability, of the brutal murder of a beloved, if minor character. The agony of a family watching a young man slowly dying is not exactly light reading, and the Herculean task of trying to reform Wickham from a likeable villain to a model citizen that you fervently hope will be the next victim is cruel to P&P lovers. The whole P&P crew are transformed from a cast of characters that you understand and love, into gang of empty-headed plug-uglies you would find it impossible to care less about. As for Darcy and his pleasant cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam, I promise you will not even recognize them!
If you are a mystery aficianado, your inevitable disappointment will be based on the fact that none of the heavily handled list of suspects have anything to do with the murder, and the one who did the deed had an inside story that the author did not see fit to share with you so you could have the fun of exercising your own powers of deduction.
I feel sure every P&P character, down to the lowest footman, would complain bitterly at being made a part of this affront to the memory and brilliance of Jane Austen. This story could have easily centered around any random family, the presence of the P&P crowd is not necessary in the slightest. It would not have been one bit more interesting, but at least it would not have been an abomination on top of being a deadly bore.
I took a chance on this book because it was written by a seasoned author that I was informed was a class act. This is my first experience with Ms. James, and I wanted to like this. Now all I want is my money back, but I will not pursue this option, because I deserve to pay some penalty for thinking the original Pride and Predjudice saga could be added to by anyone but J.A herself.
PS: Rosalyn Landor did a beautiful job narrating this, and I will certainly look for more of her work!!!

A fun story well-written! I especially loved the narrator's characterizations, and the sequence which involves not one, but two young high-bred gentlemen in their cups while trying to assist a possible murderer is priceless. Miss Heyer is the next best thing to Jane Austen, imho.

Takes a while to get good...
Revisado: 06-03-11
...but it finishes well! The hero is like those people you like, but are a little irritated with because of what appears to be simple-mindedness. But I should have known Georgette Heyer better than that! It has all the Usual Suspects, the highborn but slightly impoverished aristocrats, the beautiful daughter, the irrascible old patriarch, disappointed Second Son, and assorted dandies, caustic-tongued young men, and pink-cheeked innocents. Stir in some mysterious ghostly doings, and a nice bit of history, and this story is most palatable.
