Historia
As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Inspiring and thought provoking
Revisado: 06-27-24
Beautifully read with clear diction; soothing. The topics discussed are deep and perfectly braided together. This is a book about righteous economics (among other things); giving hope and offering solutions that are inspired by Native American language and tradition. I’ve learned there is abundance when all nature (including mankind) practices reciprocity. I believe this book is full of truth and can change our thinking and perspective on how we honour our gifts. In many ways, it reminds me of Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s Gifts of the Sea, in many ways, but is a much more substantial work of art.

Young Jody lives with his ma and pa on a farm in backwoods Florida. Life is hard there: cutting wood, planting fields, hauling water from a distant sinkhole. It is dangerous: wolves and bears roam the night. It’s also lonely for a young boy. One spring day, Jody’s pa kills a deer for meat. When Jody sees her spotted fawn in the brush, he convinces his father they should bring the fawn home. Thus begins a year when deer and boy are never far from each other. But the day will come when Jody must make a terrible choice between his beloved pet and his family’s survival.

I can’t find any weaknesses. It’s a painful tale, but important. In order to learn and grow, all should know of this part in American history that has had little to no notice.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

If a video game were a story
Revisado: 01-20-23
This book had a compelling story for me. I listened to it because my very smart grand daughter loves Sanderson’s works; reading and re-reading everything he has written. I was curious. It’s no ‘Jane Eyre’, which was my favorite book as a teen, but I think I get it. It’s entertaining. The dialogue and narration sound more like a movie script.
When the special powers that the ‘Mistborn’ were described; how the powers developed and were used, all I could think of were video games, like Sonic the Hedgehog. The gifted Mistborn gathering and using metals for different functions.
There’s also a little of Harry Potter in the story with the hero not knowing of her special powers yet being very powerful despite her tragic childhood of abuse and neglect. I could go on to pick the sort apart in this way, but I won’t. I can see why this story resonates with those raised in video games, movies and Harry Potter.
The performance was only adequate for me. I don’t know if it’s the reader’s fault or the director’s. It felt flat and without creativity. If the story weren’t so interesting, I think this book would have been a very poor purchase.
Nevertheless, I recommend this book. I would love to see what creative filmmakers could do with it.

Essentialism is more than a time-management strategy or a productivity technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not, so we can make the highest possible contribution toward the things that really matter.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

I’m tired of these quantum leap stories
Revisado: 12-10-22
I have a couple of hours left on this book, and am losing patience with it, (Not another boring book using quantum mechanics as a way to write several self indulgent short stories about a character’s different lives.) I was hoping for a story about personal insight concerning suicide and some resonating truth. If there is any, it may be toward the end of the book. But be warned, you will need to wade through a romance novel to get to it. If the profanity is removed, I think the writing is good. I was just hoping to listen to something with more substance.

Historia
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Historia
Here is the timeless story of Mary Poppins, the world's favorite nanny, and her magical adventures with the Banks family. Mary Poppins is like no other nanny the Banks children have ever seen. It all starts when their new nanny is blown by the east wind onto the doorstep of the Banks house, carrying a parrot-headed umbrella and a magic carpetbag. She becomes a most unusual nanny to Jane, Michael, and the twins.

Better than movies or musicals
Revisado: 10-24-22
Audiobook is the best way to experience this book. The writing is imaginative, creative and humorous. The reading is outstanding. I had a bias against this book because the Disney movie was my all time favorite movie until I was in my forties. I avoided reading the book because I didn’t want to spoil the movie for myself. It doesn’t. Oh, if I could write one page as Travers does! Technology has improved enough to reenact this book even to Travers’ liking. It could be serialized. I heartily endorse this performance. Enjoy!

Historia
Carmen Rita Wong has always craved a sense of belonging: First as a toddler in a warm room full of Black and brown Latina women, like her mother, Lupe, cheering her dancing during her childhood in Harlem. And in Chinatown, where her immigrant father, “Papi” Wong, a hustler, would show her and her older brother off in opulent restaurants decorated in red and gold. Then came the almost exclusively white playgrounds of New Hampshire after her mother married her stepfather, Marty, who seemed to be the ideal of the white American dad.

Why didn’t they tell me this was such a negative listen?
Revisado: 09-24-22
The writer strikes me as very intelligent and articulate. I felt the reader was irritable and angry throughout and wondered why she was selected for this performance then noticed the reader was the author! This book is interesting and somewhat enlightening, but I have three hours left and am tempted to listen to something else. It is continually expressing anger and frustration without any personal growth being articulated- Just perpetual blame, victimization and some entitlement. I may persevere, to see if anything worthwhile comes from this, but I am going to have to do it in small doses.

An important book
Revisado: 07-16-22
I think this book is very well written. It is obvious how much the author loves the Roosevelts. It’s delightful to hear the reader’s impersonations of the president and his wife.
This book is important because there are many customs started during the war years that Americans continue doing. Also, many decisions made during these years were without precedent, and are a good reminder for all of us today as we feel we are dealing with extraordinary concerns and political divisiveness.
