I have read this book many times, and on each reading I see something new in Ford's brilliance as a writer.
This narration, by Gildart Jackson, is the best rendition I've ever heard. He reads Ford's words as Ford would have wanted them read aloud.

Some of the worst, most cliche'd writing I've read in a long time. Hackneyed plot and subplots; flat, stereotypical characters; truly terrible, cringeworthy prose.

Heroism and humility

Fanone has written a deeply personal, sometimes [deservedly] profane, account of how first responders put themselves on the line without thought of their own safety. But Fanone's story also goes deep inside the head and enormous heart of a true American hero who not only fought murderous insurrectionists but faced down the cowardice and hypocrisy of the Washington bureaucracy and even his own police union.

What a letdown

I am a fan of Burke's character Dave Robicheaux and have read the entire series.
I was disappointed by the book Robicheaux, and hoped that The New Iberia Blues would be as well written and exciting as, for example, Tin Roof Blowdown.
Alas, The New Iberia Blues was another letdown. It was too long, too repetitive, too obvious and weighed down by pounds of overwrought language. The book cries out for a keen editor.
On the plus side, Will Patton's performance is superb (as always).

Brilliant and terrifying

Nance is a terrific writer (except for incorrect use of "myriad of") whose accounts are incredibly detailed and based on his many years in intelligence work.
I was riveted and frightened. But I believe him.
A must-read for understanding just how intricately entwined the Russians are in our government in general and in the Trump administration in particular. These are vile people, and Nance understands what they're up to.

A wonderful tale, beautifully written and narrated.

What did you like best about this story?

The descriptions reminded me of Middle Eastern mosaics, full of tiny jewels and stories within stories.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The Master's lesson about sharing food was especially moving.
