Whitewashing full of excuses and entitlement

This woman is so residually high on her own supply of Trumpy BS that she seems to honestly excuse away most of the damage trump did to this country all the way up until 1/6. It seems as though it wasn’t until she got on the receiving end of the catty, childish maneuverings of the Trump admin that she felt anything other than total support for all of the harmed caused. Then she comes out with this book, blaming everyone but herself (until literally the last 5 minutes) and acting as if she wasn’t actually supporting and enabling all of of it the whole time.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate Trump but there have been a couple tell-all books that I actually enjoyed - Michael Cohen’s book, Miles Taylor’s (anonymous) - but this is about as bad and self-serving as John Bolton’s book.

Read it if you want to, it’s entertaining at the least, but don’t expect any accountability or remorse.

I’m only a few hours into this book and that’s all I need to give it 5/5. Andy Serkis is absolutely perfect and his narration is magical.

I like Margot Hunt and this book was a little different from her others. I found it entertaining and thought the feelings about the affair as expressed by the couple were realistic. I absolutely hated Abby. I was frustrated by her entitlement and behavior and wanted to scream at her. But that’s not a reason to dislike the book, it certainly made me feel my feelings.

The narrator did a fine job with the female characters (except Abby) but was a cringe worthy performance with the males. They were weirdly breathy as she tried too hard to deepen her voice and Abby was either whiney or apathetic to the point of irritation.

Overall, 3/5

This book is a wild - and completely believable- telling of what it’s like to really work for Trump. I appreciate that Cohen doesn’t attempt to make himself out to be a hero or a victim and takes responsibility for his bad actions while working for Trump. Actually, it’s even a little exhausting hearing him say what a horrible POS he was so frequently.

This is actually a breath of fresh air after that unreadable, self-aggrandizing and opportunistic piece of garbage from John Bolton.

In the end, I actually feel bad for Michael Cohen and I applaud his eventual change of heart and atonement. People deserve forgiveness and second chances and for his family’s sake, I hope he gets it.

This book has some in depth and troubling behind the scenes view of what has happened and is continuing to happen at Fox News and it’s ties to Trump. I know, “we all know that Fox panders to Trump” - but this is different. This will be one of those books that, when read after the election, regardless of the outcome, will be a horrifying dive into the times we are living through. Stelter wrote an enthralling book and his narration really makes it all the more captivating. We are in trouble as a country- thanks to Stelter for writing this.

Stop comparing to the movie

The movie was based on this book, not the other way around. This book is a fascinating picture of a time where racism, homophobia, and corruption were out in the open (though the argument could certainly be made that we have circled back on that) and when we knew very little about shark behavior. This book isn’t a book about just a shark killing people, it’s about the reaction by a town and it’s people to an existential threat - fear for physical safety, fear of economic destruction, fear of political blowback. There are scenes in this book that are extremely uncomfortable- scenes that do not involve the shark at all. I enjoyed this book in its unapologetic ability to dig into the ugly side of humanity. If you’re looking for a book about a monster without any of the messy human emotion or realities of life, look elsewhere.

Also, the narrator is amazing.

Everyone knows trump is a heinous liar (whether or not some want to admit it) and this book illuminates and explains each of the most egregious ones in detail without the writers giving their personal opinions. While some may see this as a personal attack on him, Trump has no one but himself to blame.

There are a lot of reviews complaining about the ending being implausible or disappointing, but I thought it was wrapped up in a way that made sense. I mean, most suspense/thriller novels have wildly implausible twists or endings. In fact I’m not sure I can think of any that aren’t. It was entertaining- I’m not mad at it.

This is an entertaining story- short and easy to get through in one sitting. My only complaint is one that I have for a number of stories with a female narrating character- maybe it’s just me but the internal dialogue of these types of characters is always so needy and jealous of things that they really have no reason to be angry about. To me, this kind of unjustified anger doesn’t make a character interesting, it just makes me feel like the character is being portrayed as the stereotypical jealous woman. It would just be nice for once to hear a story with a lead female character being portrayed as a reasonable person not ruled by emotion.

The larger story in this book weaves together smaller stories filled with pain, grief, and frustration, through seamless transitions so you don’t feel like it’s jumping around. It really lays out a clear narrative of what it must have been like growing up in the Trump household. I found myself imagining the setting in the Waterford house from Handmaids Tale. I am left saddened and astonished at the level of dysfunction, fueled by the callous greed of Trump, his parents and siblings.

Listening to the way in which Trump was propelled by his failures by the craven actions of people in positions of power and financial institutions was like witnessing a train wreck in progress.

My heart breaks for Mary and her brother- though I recognize the book wasn’t written in a way to stoke that reaction. This book is written in a way that lacks the personal emotion that I’m sure she felt at the time and presents the story as though it were being told by someone without an investment. Because of this, it reads as balanced and objective- and credible.

Thank you for writing this book.
