Historia
The city of Bulikov once wielded the powers of the gods to conquer the world, enslaving and brutalizing millions - until its divine protectors were killed. Now Bulikov has become just another colonial outpost of the world's new geopolitical power, but the surreal landscape of the city itself - first shaped, now shattered, by the thousands of miracles its guardians once worked upon it - stands as a constant, haunting reminder of its former supremacy. Into this broken city steps Shara Thivani.

I saw this series described as “the freshest fantasy world you never knew you needed” and that’s absolutely true. It’s such a unique world! I love all the characters so much. Reviews here were divided on the reader but I thought she was excellent

Historia
The galaxy remembers Hadrian Marlowe as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives - even the emperor himself - against Imperial orders. But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world.

How is this series not more popular? It’s incredible
Revisado: 04-15-24
This book is marvelous. The story carries you off and you forget time passing. I was drawn in to the world right away - it’s a perfect blend of science fiction and classical fantasy. The plot flows so easily despite its complexity. I am so attached to each character despite the fact that there are a ton of them. The main character is arrogant and frustrating at times, but in a deeply human way that makes him endearing. I’m surprised this series has so small a following, it deserves much more hype!

Educational, good story but with an ambiguous lead
Revisado: 12-18-23
I liked this book a lot, despite the critical features of this review. I learned a lot of history and looked forward to listening. Many of the characters in the story are supremely unlikeable (weak willed, frustrating choices, lacking development, etc,) and the main character is the worst of all. I wasn’t sure if that was by the author’s design nor not, or a feature of changing paradigms over time. The reader did a pretty good job, but his voices for the women in the book were a bit whiny, which contributed to the characters seeming like “fainting daisies” when they actually had some legitimate grievances.

Endurable story, good reader.
Revisado: 12-18-23
This book had a lot of potential. I loved the world right away. The intro is gripping and I couldn’t wait to hear more. But unfortunately it becomes clear very quickly that the world-building is just a dollhouse for the romance to play out in. There’s not much interest in telling the actual story of the world, it’s just a romance novel. The male lead is interesting, the female lead is highly formulaic to the point of feeling more like fan fiction. The reader is quite good, and brought the story to life nicely. It’s an easy, fun listen, but I’m not interested in the rest of the series.

Historia
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Brilliant writing, silliest accents of all time
Revisado: 06-06-22
As per usual for Hobb’s works, the story is meticulous, sweeping, and complex. The magic system is pure genius. The characters are even more vivid and realistic than real people. The only downside is the reader. I consume a lot (a lot) of audiobooks, and this reader has by far the silliest accents I’ve ever heard. I feel like I’m observing a child’s cartoon show.
