Historia
At the age of four, Joshua Miele was blinded and badly burned when a delusional neighbor poured sulfuric acid over his head in a crime that shocked New York. It could have ended his life, but instead, Miele—naturally curious, and a born problem solver—not only recovered, but thrived. Throughout his life, Miele has found increasingly inventive ways to succeed in a world built for the sighted, and to help others to do the same. At first reluctant to even think of himself as blind, he eventually embraced his blindness and became a committed advocate for disability and accessibility

Great story, breathy reader
Revisado: 04-30-25
Fascinating and entertaining life story. I was distracted by the reader, though, who sounded asthmatic. You could hear him breathing after every sentence.

Perfect narrator
Revisado: 05-17-24
John Neihardt’s writing is so lyrical and his grandson Robin is the perfect narrator. His voice, cadence, pace, etc., all lend beautifully to telling this fascinating story of the fur traders.

Historia
Widely hailed as a spiritual classic, this inspirational and unfailingly powerful story reveals the life and visions of the Lakota healer Nicholas Black Elk (1863–1950) and the tragic history of his Sioux people during the epic closing decades of the Old West. In 1930, the aging Black Elk met a kindred spirit, the famed poet, writer, and critic John G. Neihardt (1881–1973) on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

Beautiful reading of an important book
Revisado: 07-14-21
This book is read by John Neihardt's grandson, Robin. Perhaps because he's a professional musician he gets the cadence just right and it's lovely to listen to. If you've ever wanted to read BES but have found it inaccessible, listen to this version. It's a faithful telling of a remarkable life.
