Compelling material, told dully
Revisado: 02-04-25
This should be a compelling story, told by a jurist who was there. And yet it’s not told in a way that keeps your attention. The judge describes cases that weren’t before him, and draws conclusions from them that distracted from what I had hoped would be the inside dope from the cases that were heard in his courtroom. This could have been an interesting book. It wasn’t.

The material is dramatic; the narrator is overly so, to the point of distraction. Hard to listen to.

Historia
In this “striking, brave[,] and often lyrical” (The Guardian) blend of nature writing, whale science, and memoir, Doreen Cunningham interweaves two stories: tracking the extraordinary northward migration of the grey whales with a mischievous toddler in tow and living with an Iñupiaq family in Alaska seven years earlier. A story of courage and resilience, Soundings is about the migrating whales and all we can learn from them as they mother, adapt, and endure, their lives interrupted and threatened by global warming.

Tedious
Revisado: 11-12-23
The whale bits are interesting. The author describes in detail how she’s incapable of making a good decision, then repeatedly cites anecdotal evidence as proof than her worldview is correct.
The political lecturing takes away from the story.

Revisado: 10-23-21
Compelling material, inexpertly told, narrated by a game show announcer.
This should have been a fantastic book. The material's there, but it would have benefitted greatly by a good editor. And the narration is completely wrong for the material.
Still 3-stars despite these large problems. There are better cop memoirs out there, e.g. The Job.

Historia
Our Crime Was Being Jewish contains 576 vivid memories of 358 Holocaust survivors. These are the true, insider stories of victims, told in their own words. They include the experiences of teenagers who saw their parents and siblings sent to the gas chambers; of starving children beaten for trying to steal a morsel of food; of people who saw their friends commit suicide to save themselves from the daily agony they endured.

Good, but...
Revisado: 10-14-21
There are better Holocaust survivor books. Forgotten Voices of the Holocaust comes to mind, which is the voices of the actual survivors. A few of the accounts present camp rumors as fact, which is to be expected in an oral history, but I expect better of the editors working in 2015.

Uneven
Revisado: 12-04-20
The story is a bizarre memoir; all over the place. Almost superficial in some places, and excruciatingly detailed in others. Her work in CISM (catastrophic incident something something - providing counselling to caregivers and first responders after a bad call) is fantastic work, but isn't what I expected half the book to be about.

Historia
Investigating other police officers is a job no cop wants to do. Against the backdrop of the 1995 merger of the NYC Transit and Housing Police Departments into the New York City Police Department, this is the true story of a transit police lieutenant who abruptly finds himself walking a tightrope. The author, then a 14-year veteran lieutenant in the Transit Police Department at the time of the merger, is thrust into command of a squad of seasoned NYPD investigators with the Internal Affairs Bureau.

interesting, but not definitive
Revisado: 01-31-20
The book was entertaining, though narrowly focused and not the definitive story of the NYPD's IAB (for that read Blue on Blue). Overall, a solid book, and I recommend it.
The audio production suffered from the occasional mispronunciation, and several times the narrator's several attempts at reading a line were left in (an editing error).
I went looking for the audiobook versions of this author's other books, but was unable to find any. I do own his two Dark Knight books as ebooks.

Historia
The favorite book of William Burroughs. A journey into the hobo underworld, freight hopping around the still Wild West, becoming a highwayman and member of the yegg (criminal) brotherhood, getting hooked on opium, doing stints in jail or escaping, often with the assistance of crooked cops or judges. Our lost history revived. With an introduction by Burroughs. A BookSense 77 selection.

Stunning book. extraordinarily well written
Revisado: 03-01-19
Loved this book. A fantastic glimpse of criminal life in Western North America in the 1880s-1920s. Extremely well-written and approachable. A grand adventure.
Older kids would like it, but there are deaths described moderately graphically, and the author becomes.an opium addict, so keep that in mind.

Historia
Detouring from the traditional timeline of marriage-kids-house, 26-year-old Vikki Warner skips straight to homeownership. She buys a run-down three-story house in Providence, Rhode Island, and suddenly finds herself responsible for a rotating cast of colorful tenants. Adulthood comes with unforeseen challenges: backed-up sewage, gentrification, global economic downturn. Tenemental is a candid portrait of how sharing space profoundly reshapes our lives, and forces us to grow into ourselves.

Meandering, self-indulgent
Revisado: 01-31-19
I'm not sure what I expected from this book; probably more crazy-tenant stories. There were some of those, but nothing particularly outrageous, and those tended to be self-inflicted as she didn't vet her tenants beforehand. Then the story veered into her love life as she struggled to balance relationships with this Albatross of a house that she'd hung around her own neck. It became a story about how she never expected her life to revolve around this house, but here she was, and what did that imply about *her*?
I tried to finish the book, but lost interest 2/3 of the way through.
