This should be a compelling story, told by a jurist who was there. And yet it’s not told in a way that keeps your attention. The judge describes cases that weren’t before him, and draws conclusions from them that distracted from what I had hoped would be the inside dope from the cases that were heard in his courtroom. This could have been an interesting book. It wasn’t.

The material is dramatic; the narrator is overly so, to the point of distraction. Hard to listen to.

The whale bits are interesting. The author describes in detail how she’s incapable of making a good decision, then repeatedly cites anecdotal evidence as proof than her worldview is correct.

The political lecturing takes away from the story.

Compelling material, inexpertly told, narrated by a game show announcer.

This should have been a fantastic book. The material's there, but it would have benefitted greatly by a good editor. And the narration is completely wrong for the material.

Still 3-stars despite these large problems. There are better cop memoirs out there, e.g. The Job.

There are better Holocaust survivor books. Forgotten Voices of the Holocaust comes to mind, which is the voices of the actual survivors. A few of the accounts present camp rumors as fact, which is to be expected in an oral history, but I expect better of the editors working in 2015.

The story is a bizarre memoir; all over the place. Almost superficial in some places, and excruciatingly detailed in others. Her work in CISM (catastrophic incident something something - providing counselling to caregivers and first responders after a bad call) is fantastic work, but isn't what I expected half the book to be about.

The book was entertaining, though narrowly focused and not the definitive story of the NYPD's IAB (for that read Blue on Blue). Overall, a solid book, and I recommend it.

The audio production suffered from the occasional mispronunciation, and several times the narrator's several attempts at reading a line were left in (an editing error).

I went looking for the audiobook versions of this author's other books, but was unable to find any. I do own his two Dark Knight books as ebooks.

This book just never grabbed me. I wanted to love it, but am returning it after a couple of hours. I found the narration disjointed, and the stories repetitious. Sorry; it just lost me.

Loved this book. A fantastic glimpse of criminal life in Western North America in the 1880s-1920s. Extremely well-written and approachable. A grand adventure.

Older kids would like it, but there are deaths described moderately graphically, and the author becomes.an opium addict, so keep that in mind.

I'm not sure what I expected from this book; probably more crazy-tenant stories. There were some of those, but nothing particularly outrageous, and those tended to be self-inflicted as she didn't vet her tenants beforehand. Then the story veered into her love life as she struggled to balance relationships with this Albatross of a house that she'd hung around her own neck. It became a story about how she never expected her life to revolve around this house, but here she was, and what did that imply about *her*?

I tried to finish the book, but lost interest 2/3 of the way through.
