Historia
Agent Isaac Steele has problems. He spends all his splibs on drink and drugs. He has some deep-seated and very much unresolved issues with his parents. And his robotic partner at Greatest Britain’s Department of Clarification, Dr Timothy Stephens, is ruled more by his heart than his hard drive. But all these issues take a back seat when Isaac stumbles upon a case involving the most sensitive information in the cosmos - a Never File, inaccessible to all except those with the highest clearance. He is expressly forbidden to involve himself. So naturally he does.

So clever. So funny.
Revisado: 01-28-23
I don't think I have listened to an audiobook this clever or funny in recent memory and I have been an Audible member for 20 years. Daniel Rigby does it all with a story and an audio performance so good, that I don't want it to end. I'm so happy to have found his book and sad that there aren't like, a zillion more sequels. British humor might not be your coupa, but it is mine. Besides the humor and interesting characters, Rigby also creates so many cool alien and colorful concepts, that I will probably need to listen again to catch all the creative elements. I got this book through the Plus Catalog but I will gladly pay for more Rigby . . . like right now!

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Matt Haig's other books are sooo much better
Revisado: 01-21-23
Matt Haig's books, "The Humans" and "How to Stop Time" are so much better than "The Midnight Library" (TML). I listened to this book because I felt I owed it to him since the other two books were so good. Matt Haig has a way of keeping my attention throughout the entire narrative. He did this with the Midnight Library too, but I just wanted to get through it so I could go onto something enjoyable.
Gazillions of people bought and probably enjoyed TML. I didn't enjoy it and I didn't care very much about Nora, the protagonist. I had more empathy for the polar bear [oops]. I am trying to imagine if I were depressed and suicidal, if TML would lift my spirits or help me make different choices. I honestly hope that happens for some readers.
I am grateful for authors like Matt Haig who take chances and have to bare the burden of critics. Matt seems like someone I could go out of my way to honor through positive reviews or even PayPal donations. He's really good. I could be completely naïve, but he seems like an exceptional "Human." If he considers doing sequels, please let it be "The Humans" or "How to Stop Time" and not TML.
Matt, you're wonderful, amazing and should be treasured — for real!

Historia
Some say that to change the world you must first burn it down. Now that belief will be tested in the crucible of revolution: The Breakers and Burners have seized the levers of power, the smoke of riots has replaced the smog of industry, and all must submit to the wisdom of crowds. With nothing left to lose, Citizen Brock is determined to become a new hero for the new age, while Citizeness Savine must turn her talents from profit to survival before she can claw her way to redemption.

Abercrombie and Pacey - Whadda combo!
Revisado: 12-04-21
I would read Job Abercrombie's version of a phone book and relish being able to hear Steven Pacey perform it. I have been an Audible subscriber for about 18 years and these two guys are my favorite partnership. I'm about as eager for the next Abercrombie book as I am for the 3rd season of Ted Lasso. I just hope these gents keep going and going.

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

College Kids Rule the World(s)!
Revisado: 09-23-19
When I was in college I was a dummy dumb dumb like my peers. In Outland, a group of college kids are the protagonists and not only are they geniuses, but everything always goes right for them even in the worst possible scenario, i.e., the end of the world. I loved Taylor's Bobiverse and I like the characters in Outland. Ray Porter is an excellent narrator for this type of novel. The sciencey bits are interesting as are the logistical descriptions of how the students deal with the end of civilization and exploit the multiverse. I enjoyed the story and don't regret the purchase, but Outland is the Hallmark Channel version of the Apocalypse.

Michael Sheen is superb!
Revisado: 11-12-17
I loved the full-cast experience of the "His Dark Materials" series. For anyone hesitant to listen to a single narrator after listening to the full cast trilogy, do no be concerned. Mr. Sheen is one of the best narrators I've ever listened to in my 25+ year history of audio books. There are several action scenes in this book where the narrator raises his voice and almost shouts. The intensity is incredible. Audible should make one of these scenes be the sample that audio book browsers hear. Sure, this is a great story by Pullman, but he couldn't have picked a better voice actor. Sheen's range of voice characterization is stunning. And if you're an Anglophile like me, you're in for a treat.

Venice, a really long time ago: Three prominent Venetians await their most loathsome and foul dinner guest, the erstwhile envoy from Britain who also happens to be a favorite of the Doge: The rascal-Fool Pocket. This trio of cunning plotters have lured Pocket to a dark dungeon, promising a spirited evening. Their invitation is, of course, bogus. These scoundrels have something far less amusing planned for the man who has consistently foiled their quest for power and wealth. But this Fool is no fool.…

Nope, just entertaining.

Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

Great narrator, 2D characters and gun lust
Revisado: 01-09-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
People who enjoy comic books and escapist fiction.
What could Larry Correia have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
This is the second book I've tried to listen to from Mr. Corriea and his politics put me off which make me dislike his characters.
What about Bronson Pinchot’s performance did you like?
Bronson Pinchot is top knotch and his grasp of voices, accents, and dialects is very impressive.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was mildly entertained and then irritated with the author's sporadic political messages when his characters spoke or thought about which political types of people they hated, which must be who the author hates as well.
Any additional comments?
Larry Corriea appeals to many readers, according to the reviews. He writes well in the sense that the plot is solid and his characters are colorful in a cardboard cutout sort of way. I love comic books myself and would enjoy Corriea's books more without his irrelevant political opinions. I stopped listening to one of this other books but thought I'd try a different series. Same thing happened and I won't take another chance again.

Historia
Hank was a dying breed on the space station Belvaille. The criminal gangs that had once made their homes there were forced out by the corporations that had taken over since the facility became an Independent Protectorate. Instead of the gentlemanly gang wars that had once dominated the scene, and made Hank's services prized as a negotiator, the city was now plagued by the clash of corporate armies using heavy weapons. Even tanks roamed the streets regularly.

Great in every respect - KaCHOOM!
Revisado: 11-13-14
If you could sum up Hard Luck Hank in three words, what would they be?
Most enjoyable listen.
What other book might you compare Hard Luck Hank to and why?
Off to be the Wizard. Both of these books are lighthearted with male characters who have issues on top of being comical heroes.
What about Liam Owen’s performance did you like?
Liam is absolutely perfect for the voice of Hank. In fact, Liam could turn a basketful of crap into, well, a basket.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
There is no I in team, but there is a "Ha" in Hank!
Any additional comments?
More Hank, less Kardashians!

Historia
Hank is a thug. He knows he's a thug. He has no problem with that realization. In his view the galaxy has given him a gift: a mutation that allows him to withstand great deals of physical trauma. He puts his abilities to the best use possible and that isn't by being a scientist. Besides, the space station Belvaille doesn't need scientists. It is not, generally, a thinking person's locale. It is the remotest habitation in the entire Colmarian Confederation. There is literally no reason to be there.

Great Escape!
Revisado: 08-28-14
If you could sum up Hard Luck Hank in three words, what would they be?
Read it suckface!
What other book might you compare Hard Luck Hank to and why?
Other audio books that I enjoyed in the sci-fi humor category are "Soon I Will Be Invincible." by Austin Grossman and "Off to be a Wizard" by Scott Meyer.
What does Liam Owen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Liam Owen reminds me of Patrick Warburton who is known for his voice over talent in Family Guy, Venture Bros, as Elaine's boyfriend Puddy on Seinfeld and many other roles. Liam Owen sounds like a big guy with a personality and an intelligence not usually associated with big guys — you dig? No? Whatever.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No way! This was a book so enjoyable I purposely only listened 30 minutes at a time. If I fell asleep listening to it, I would just start that section over from where I Ieft off.
Any additional comments?
I hope Steven Campbell's other Hank stories are made into audio books soon. If not, I guess I'll do something else.

Revisado: 08-25-12
I have enjoyed books by Tim Powers in the past and never got around to reading "On Stranger Tides" until now. What a treat! Not only is this a great story, Bronson Pinchot is an amazing narrator. The way he does the voices of the pirates, French, and English accents is incredible. Powers is one of my favorite authors and now Pinchot joins the small number of my favorite narrators.
