Eye Opening onto many levels!!

Thank you J.D.!! You have opened a part of my mind that I hope will stay open! I work at a high school and thought I could SEE my students, but now I know that I don't know what I don't know. I will listen more, judge less, and keep my heart and eyes open to how I can help encourage my students to help themselves and each other.

Deeply researched, flat presentation

I deeply enjoy historical fiction!! My interest is peaked and I find myself diving in to learn more about the actual history of the era. While this book delivered on my wanting to know more about the actual people and events of this time in Rome, it feel short in most every other way. The details went on and on, and were often repeated IN DETAIL when one character shared info with another. It felt like the author wanted to make sure that if a person started reading at chapter 1 or 50 or 100 they would be fully informed of what happened up until that point. I actually stopped listening 4 times for a break to listen and complete other books. Bottomline, okay book because of historical content, but at best so-so on all other levels.

Kept hoping it would get better

Felt like a poorly acted movie but issue seemed to be both the story as written and the narration. Although perhaps narrator did best they could with script they were given. Gave 2 to 3 stars rather than 1 because the historical information was pretty good (grabbing for positives).

Words and tone create full range of reader emotions

After completing this book I felt like I understood the words so much better. For much on the book I shared with my husband that I felt like emotion was lacking FROM the writing. I felt distant from the horrors created by the war ...the starvation and death and complete destruction of life and lives. But then as Zofia's emotions changed so did MY feelings. I feel like the magic of Madeline's writing in this book comes from guiding the reader down the emotional path that Zofia walked by somehow keeping the emotion of war at arms length so as not to be swallowed up by it. And then experiencing the dawning of love after 5 years of was and occupation and allowing the emotion and living of life back into Zofia's world and our hearts right along with her.
