Historia
“They’re going to kill me soon,” begins the note Amelia discovers in an antique hurdy-gurdy. From that moment on, the shy young woman finds herself doing all kinds of things she never thought possible. Between newfound intimacies and a risky journey into the past, Amelia comes to see herself in a whole new light. The scrawled note drives Amelia to find out what happened to the person who wrote it, identified only as “Hannah.” Who was Hannah? Was she really murdered? Amelia’s investigation leads her to dizzying new heights of romance and danger. Like a tightrope walker, she must not look down—especially when she finds herself in situations uncannily similar to those Hannah faced just before her murder. Like the Mrs. Pollifax mysteries for which Dorothy Gilman is famous, The Tightrope Walker features a spirited and unpretentious heroine and an intriguing mystery, enhanced by colorful settings and characters. Ruth Ann Phimister’s skillful narration adds a personal dimension, making you care about Amelia and the fascinating and dangerous people she meets.

Riveting Historical Narrative
Revisado: 09-20-24
It is difficult to relate such harrowing subject matter in a way that doesn't bring the reader to deep despair. Susan Meissner's manages to leave the reader with hope and a deeper understanding of the human failures that allowed the atrocities of eugenics to be perpetrated not only by the Nazi Regime, but by doctors right here in America.
Although the theme of this story springs from the darkest part of humanity, the message focuses on the strength of love and the resilience of the human soul.
As always, Meissner builds her characters with a tapestry of good and bad. No one is 100% virtuos or evil. In "Only the Beautiful", Rosie, Selina, Helen and Truman live and breath on the pages with all their flaws and shortcomings serving to make them completely beautiful human beings.

A Lot Of Gross Sex. Very Little Story.

Couldn't maintain interest in the story because every other paragraph was about a sordid sex affair with more detail than I needed to hear. Get A Room and close the door.

Good Easy Listening
Revisado: 03-28-24
I enjoy the predictable plot lines and getting to know the characters. Although the main characters are rather more caricatures of their "types" who remain static and uninfluenced by their life experiences. That was a bit frustrating to me. I really wanted them to grow and make different choices at some points.
Still, I've enjoyed the stories and found them easy to listen along to as I worked at my desk.

I never guessed the ending!
Revisado: 10-19-23
I have given it five stars across the board. Not something I normally do. The only downside for me was the difficulty of following so many different characters. The narratives accent was strong and good and appropriate, but I still had some trouble following the story. So much happened so quickly.
After finishing it, I almost think I should listen again because I am sure that I missed some nuanced clues throughout the story. Plus I would have a better grasp of who all the players are The second time through. Even knowing how it ends, I think I would enjoy it just as much the second time through.

Wordy. Slow. Meandering.
Revisado: 08-27-23
I'm two hours in and still no discernible story line. The narrator makes no distinction between characters so it's nearly impossible to know who's speaking. Although Ninety percent of it has been disjointed narrative anyway so characters are apparently on secondary.
I hoped for period mystery but it's just a lost noise. The mystery is how this ever got caragorized as a mystery at all.

HAS POTENTIAL, NEEDS AN EDITOR
Revisado: 01-30-23
Struggled to listen to 4 hours of this 10 and a half hour audio book. There's raw material here for an interesting novel, but it needs a lot of editing, rewriting, story structure work and polishing. I'll keep an eye out for Wrights' work and try another one later on.

Aptly Titled: Exemplifies Art of Language
Revisado: 12-08-22
This is not a casual "listen-while-you-work" type of story. It's not really a "story" at all. It's a literary documentary of sorts. A dramatization of the human struggle to make sense of the ugliness that comes into our lives and how it's possible to find the purpose, the positive, the profound in those experiences which seem designed to destroy. This book, like a lighted flare on the roadside, signals caution, danger but promises hope and rescue.
Listen to this book intently. You will be pondering selected words and phrases at night as you drift off to sleep and find them enlivened in your dreams.
