Historia
The city of Austin, Texas, "is fearfully dull", wrote young Will Porter to a friend in the spring of 1885, "except for the frequent raids of the Servant Girl Annihilators, who make things lively in the dead of night." Years later Will Porter would become the most famous writer in America - O. Henry, the toast of New York. The long-ago Austin servant girl murders would remain unsolved. But behind the O. Henry pen name, Will Porter was a man with secrets.

Should be called ‘no twist at the end’
Revisado: 02-25-25
The mystery is so easy to figure out that for 15 hours you keep wondering why the characters can’t see it. Kept listening to the end waiting for the twist. But there isn’t one, it turns out just like you figured out at 5 hours into the story. The narration is wonderful and you grow to like some of the characters. But it was just plain boring for the last 15 hours. Perhaps an abridged version would leave the reader feeling less like this was a huge waste of time.

Boring
Revisado: 01-26-25
Very boring. Seems like the author just needed to fill up pages in the book but didn’t have much of a plot. This could be abridged to be an hour long. It is just hours and hours of the characters traveling from one place to another meeting boring people that are annoying and add nothing to the plot.
I’ve read other books in this series that were much better. I’ll give the next book a try, but if it isn’t better than this one I don’t think I’ll continue listening to this series.

Historia
After the horrors of war against the forces of Napoleon and the hardships of guarding convicts in Australia, ex-soldier Gregory Hardiman is enjoying the quiet life of an ostler at a Cambridge coaching inn, with only the occasional nightmare to disturb his sleep, and memory of lost loves to disturb his waking hours. But when the inn’s cook is found drowned in the river in the spring of 1825 and his distraught widow pleads for help, Gregory finds himself caught up in the unexpectedly murky world of college life in the town.

Historia
Maurice Seton was a famous mystery writer - but no murder from his imagination could equal the ghastliness of his own death. When his grotesquely mutilated corpse is found in a drifting dinghy, ripples of horror spread among his bizarre neighbors: the cruel and cynical drama critic, the celebrated recluse, and the rakish young heir. It is up to Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh and his extraordinary aunt to discover the shocking truth about Seton's past - before the plot takes another murderous turn.

If ever a book needed unabridged, this is it…
Revisado: 10-01-24
There is just so much needless, uninteresting detail here. It slows the book down tremendously and makes it boring. But this is how I have found all the books I’ve read in this series. Life is too short to listen to boring, unnecessary details and annoying characters. I wanted to love PD James, but now I’m too bored to even care to finished the ones I have left in my library. I suspect these MIGHT be better in book format than audio.

Revisado: 05-28-24
All relevant details could have been presented in 2 hours. I like this series, but this book went on, and on over the same useless details over and over. For at least 4 hours of the book we seemed to go over the same information again and again.

Really didn’t need the lesbian sex scenes
Revisado: 10-13-23
The lesbian sex scene added nothing to the plot. Which made it feel like it was put in just to make some kind of point or tick a LBGTQ+ check box. I’ll give one more book in the series a go, but if there is a repeat of graphic sex of any kind I’m going to stop with this series. That just isn’t what I’m looking for in a historical mystery.

Revisado: 10-04-23
I’ve never listened to this author before and I hesitated to spend a credit on it. But I’m very glad I did. The story was compelling and the characters engaging. I figured out the plot well before the end but still couldn’t stop listening.

Great new series — what good mysteries used to be like…
Revisado: 02-08-23
A really great new series. Interesting, well written, good character development and a good plot. The narration is good as well.
And, for the first time in months of new credits, a listen that doesn’t feel the need to introduce political agendas, ideology or vulgarity into it to bolster the work. It stands alone on its merits without the need to pander to one group or another to prop up poor writhing.
Well done. I loved it.
If only the Veronica Speedwell series was presented like this, I would still be listening to it. But, I’m happy to say this series more than fills the gap left but that series that started off well but ended in the gutter.
