A Court Of Must Hurry
Revisado: 05-31-24
I like the book.
However, the voice actors seem to have not studied the story at all and had no real understanding of dialogue. This is billed as "a movie in your mind" but, mostly they just read the words without acting the scene and in some instances when they did act they were so overly dramatic it was distracting. The main narrator must be getting paid by the word because she just read through the lines so quickly like she had somewhere else she needed to be. It's a shame because the story is pretty darn good.

50/50
Revisado: 05-31-20
It could have been better, but it wasn't. The narrator was okay, but he didn't have much to work with. The story was weak, almost like it was phoned in. The book is easily one of the worst in the Reacher series.

Historia
First published by H. G. Wells in 1898, The War of the Worlds is the granddaddy of all alien invasion stories. The novel begins ominously, as the lone voice of a narrator intones, "No one would have believed in the last years of the 19th century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's."

It has gained classic status for a reason...it's a great book. Performed wonderfully, and not too long, it's a joy to listen to.

Flung a cravin' on me every chapter...
Revisado: 07-26-19
The gentle Southern accent of Rick Bragg makes this long book a real pleasure to hear. The love for his upbringing and of his culture come through with a proud smile for his mother. Her life stories and recipes are a joy for this Southern boy to listen to. Every recipe will fling a cravin' on you for more.

This is Southern Comfort...
Revisado: 04-11-19
I could listen to the author tell stories for as long as he would tell them. For folks from the south My Southern Journey is an entertaining listen that soft and easy like gets in your heart. Like I said, this is real Southern Comfort. Very good!

I think the story is a great saga, but, to me, the narrator was so bad that I returned the book during chapter two.

It was better before the movie...
Revisado: 01-18-18
I like the story and all the food for thought it offers, but overall it was better when I read it back before I saw the movie. The narrator was so melodramatic that he sounded like a lounge singer on Valium... I felt like I needed a martini and a cigarette to listen.

Historia
The Pickwick Papers, Dickens's first novel, is a delightful romp through the pre-Reform Bill England of 1827. Samuel Pickwick and the rest of the Pickwickians are some of the most memorable of all Dickens's creations, and it is a joy to hear of their adventures in search of "interesting scenes and characters", and the repeated efforts of the quick-witted Sam Weller to rescue them all from disaster.

Wonderfully performed, and a heartwarming story. Dickens is my favorite of the classic authors, and this, his first novel, is a great beginning.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Henri, Mack and his boys, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and most poignant works.
