Historia
Orphaned during her passage from Ireland, young, white Lavinia arrives on the steps of the kitchen house and is placed, as an indentured servant, under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate slave daughter. Lavinia learns to cook, clean, and serve food while guided by the quiet strength and love of her new family. In time Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, caring for the master's opium-addicted wife and befriending his dangerous yet protective son. She attempts to straddle the worlds of the kitchen and big house, but her skin color will forever set her apart.

Good but did not like the overly-dramatized voice of Levinia. It got very tedious as the book progressed. I love antebellum history and stories of the south. I think this was pretty unrealistic with all the drama and sub-plots, but I know much was representative of the time and how blacks suffered at the hands of white slave-owners. Incredible that the men were willing to produce offspring with their slave women and could still justify “owning” these human beings who were no different than themselves except in skin pigment. Good to read historical novels that remind us of how awful human nature can be, and that God created all people as equal, precious and deserving of love and self-determination
