It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

The ghost haunting the house has been murdered, and until he can solve the mystery of how he died, he refuses to move on. Revisado: 02-27-25
If you're trying to portray a 20-something Norseman, maybe don’t make him sound like Vlad Dracula. Every scene with Brandt was bizarre—actually, apparently any European accent automatically defaults to stereotypical Romanian? And the female voices? All whiny and breathy. Just hire a female voice actress and spare us.

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Hire. Another. Voice. Actor.
Revisado: 02-27-25
The story itself is decent so far, but the narration leaves a lot to be desired. The narrator’s voice sounds more like a raspy Jeaneane Garofalo after a pack of cigarettes rather than a young woman in her twenties. The action scenes are overly dramatized, delivered in a breathless, almost frantic manner—making them feel forced instead of intense. A more measured approach would let the writing speak for itself.
The narration makes the action scenes feel overblown, but the real struggle is the intimacy. Hearing this narrator read a sex scene is downright uncomfortable. Honestly, I’d rather have Gilbert Gottfried narrate my husband and me being intimate in real-time than sit through another awkward attempt at sensuality.

Solid piece of work
Revisado: 12-03-24
Wolverine: Election Day by Peter David is a gripping story filled with political intrigue and action. The author clearly understands American politics, adding realism and depth to the plot. The stakes are high, the action sequences feel grounded, and the twist at the end is both surprising and compelling. Wolverine himself is written accurately, capturing his signature grit and moral complexity, which fans (like myself) will appreciate.
However, the story isn’t without its flaws. The ending feels rushed, with little follow-up on the villain’s fate, leaving a major loose end. The portrayal of the kidnapped boy’s mother as hysterical and annoying is frustrating—her reactions are entirely normal for a mother whose child has been taken by terrorists. This lack of empathy for her situation by the author and those who interact with her (she’s treated as a problem and a liability to the investigation) diminishes the emotional weight of the story. Peter David just likes taking kids away from mothers and completely glosses over or dismisses how traumatic that would be, I guess? (Ref: X-Factor #39 2005 series).
The book also suffers from a noticeable lack of female characters, and the one significant woman present is painted in a negative light. Considering Peter David’s handling of female characters in other works—yes, I’m still not over X-Factor #39, clearly—it’s hard not to feel disappointed.
The depiction of an enlisted service member piloting an aircraft is a glaring inaccuracy, as U.S. military pilots are commissioned officers. For an enlisted character to be the pilot, the story would need to take significant creative liberties, as this does not align with standard U.S. military procedures. If the character were flying in a civilian capacity or as part of a non-standard military operation, that might be more believable, but otherwise, it’s a notable inaccuracy.
Despite these issues, the story is engaging, with solid action and an intriguing twist. It’s worth reading for Wolverine fans, but the flaws may leave some readers wanting more and better.

Perfect for fans of Blake Crouch, Neal Stephenson, Philip K Dick, Kim Stanley Robinson and RR Haywood, or those that loved Steven Pacey's narration of Joe Abercrombie's First Law series.

A Captivating Mystery with a Vivid Futuristic World
Revisado: 12-03-24
Artificial Wisdom by Thomas R. Weaver is an exciting mix of mystery, technology, and deep questions about human nature. The story grabs you right away with a strong mystery, and the use of futuristic gadgets makes the world feel alive and easy to picture without being overwhelming.
One of the best parts of this book is how it shows that, even in a highly advanced future, human nature doesn’t change as quickly as technology does. The characters are relatable and flawed in realistic ways, which makes their decisions and struggles feel authentic. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.” This theme is woven beautifully into the story.
The AI character, Solomon, is fascinating, and the book ends on a thrilling cliffhanger—great news for fans because there’s a confirmed sequel coming! The author is also active on Reddit and was very kind in talking with fans, which makes supporting his work even more rewarding.
The audiobook narration is fantastic. The voice actors bring the characters to life with the perfect balance of emotion and tone, making it a truly immersive experience.
A Few Minor Issues
While the book is fantastic, there are a few small flaws. Some moments feel a bit rushed, and a couple of characters fall into predictable “far-right” or “far-left” stereotypes. Solomon’s long monologue near the end was interesting but might have been better spaced out or saved for the next book, as it felt a little rushed when it should’ve been more action-packed.
Overall
Even with these small critiques, Artificial Wisdom is an outstanding story that’s well worth your time. The mystery, futuristic world, and unforgettable characters make it a must-read. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Great story - female performance was grating.
Revisado: 12-03-24
Cecy Robson's "Bloodguard" is an exceptional story that beautifully blends engaging, slow-burn romance with a compelling world steeped in unique history. The characters are rich, multidimensional, and memorable, making it easy to fall in love with the story. The romance felt authentic and realistic, adding emotional depth to the thrilling narrative.
Regarding the audiobook performance, I didn’t mind the male voice talent. He did an excellent job using his deep voice to convey a wide range of emotions, all of which felt genuine and nuanced—a feat that's not easy to accomplish. Unfortunately, the female voice talent left much to be desired. Her delivery often sounded strained or scratchy, and her inflection at the end of sentences gave the impression that every statement was a question. This lilting quality made her narration feel unconfident and, at times, grating. It was distracting and made the audiobook harder to enjoy.
Despite the challenges with the female narration, the strength of the story itself more than makes up for it. Cecy Robson’s world-building and storytelling are top-notch, and I’d wholeheartedly recommend "Bloodguard" to anyone who loves an engaging romance and a well-crafted fantasy world. If the narration detracts too much, the book is certainly worth reading in print (especially the hardback version with the beautiful sprayed edges).

I don’t get the hype
Revisado: 12-03-24
I really tried to give It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover a chance, as it seemed like it could tell a compelling story. Unfortunately, I found it to be a disappointing experience. While the narration was fine, I deeply regret using a credit on this audiobook—it’s a constant reminder of a poor choice.
One particularly egregious aspect was the perpetuation of the "sassy gay friend" stereotype, coupled with an unsettling moment of non-consensual behavior. No one—gay or straight—has the right to touch someone without their consent, and portraying this as humorous or acceptable is troubling. Has Hoover even met a gay man? The only time I’ve had a gay man touch me inappropriately and use being gay as an excuse was in high school, and it wasn’t because he was gay—it was because he was (and still is) an asshole.
Beyond that, the book’s attempt to tackle serious issues like domestic abuse and breaking the cycle of abuse felt ham-fisted. The story lacked depth and nuance, reducing these critical topics to surface-level dramatics. The hype surrounding this book is entirely unwarranted. It reads like a rushed, profit-driven effort rather than a thoughtful exploration of its themes.

Revisado: 01-09-24
This was a book club selection and I don’t hate it - just a few nit-pick things where I eye-rolled; for instance, a 10 year old dancing half-clothed on a secret TikTok account is more concerning than the author seems to think it is. Do yall know how many pedos are on that site?
A bit predictable and a bit ham-fisted on the overly-misogynistic male characters, the “pick me” technology inept overbearing old boss woman, the mom’s play group/social political commentary… but otherwise a great reminder to slow the hell down and remember who and what is important in life.
Not a bad book but didn’t knock my socks off, either. Glad I read it overall.
Narration was really good - great performance.

Historia
The First World War laid waste to a continent and brought about the end of innocence — and the end of faith. Unlike a generation of young writers who lost faith in the God of the Bible, however, J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis found that the Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers on the Western Front, survived the trenches, and used the experience of that conflict to ignite their Christian imagination.

Deeply moving
Revisado: 12-27-23
I learned things about both authors and WW1 I’d never known. What I already knew (W1 soldier conditions, tge battles/geography/progression of the war, the Inklings, CS Lewis’ conversion, the allegorical Christianity in both authors’ bodies of work) were given much more depth and sometimes an altogether new and fresh perspective.
Beautifully read aloud, as well. Tenor of his voice is calm and smooth but not sleep-inducing.
Well worth the time and money - will buy a hard copy so I can make notes and highlight passages I’d like to remember later.
