Historia
Around 250,000 people have had their genomes sequenced, and scientists expect that number to rise to one billion by 2025. Professor Steven J. Heine argues that the first thing we will do on receiving our DNA test results is to misinterpret them completely. Despite breathless (often lightly researched) media coverage about newly discovered "cancer" or "divorce" or "IQ" genes, the prospect of a DNA test forecasting how your life is going to turn out is vanishingly small.

Understanding and Moderating the Hype of Genetics
Revisado: 08-23-17
What made the experience of listening to DNA Is Not Destiny the most enjoyable?
The science was quickly explained and I felt no need to remember the long names nor their mnemonics to make sense of the history, present status, false claims, hype, fear, and hope for the study of genetics and what the future might hold.
What did you like best about this story?
I think the author did a great job of explaining the history and exploring the marketplace of companies that offer, for a price, to explore and evaluate your DNA. The examples he gave of people that were surprised by what they found out, or acted out of fear on the results based on a company's less than fully creditable information (educated guesses in some instances) was well told.
What does Stephen R. Thorne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He sounds like he was the author and I enjoyed the story telling aspects of it and his delivery on the many jokes or tales he relates to make his points. One example is bringing Elvis Presley's DNA into the story, and the misinterpretation thereof, which was hilarious.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The Power of the Genome -- be very careful what you think you understand and what you might relay to others.
Any additional comments?
Very seldom will I suggest to a vast audience anything I've read, but this will be the first time. Why? Because it's such an interesting and futuristic subject. Secondly there's so much false info flying around on genetics that this book might hopefully prevent people from forming a bias one way or the other based on one study, one report, one rumor they heard.

Historia
Against the background of an age that saw the rebirth of ancient and classical learning, Paul Strathern explores the intensely dramatic rise and fall of the Medici family in Florence as well as the Italian Renaissance, which they did so much to sponsor and encourage. Interwoven into the narrative are the lives of many of the great Renaissance artists with whom the Medici had dealings, including Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Donatello as well as scientists like Galileo and Pico della Mirandola.

Interesting and Well Written
Revisado: 08-23-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I love history and have a good smattering of European military history that barely brushed on Italy. I knew of the Medici; the Renaissance; Da Vinci, Michelangelo et al; the Borgias, Machiavelli and the Catholic Church (yikes). This was a great summary of the times and I'd say a refresher although I can't say the Medici were ever mentioned in my courses.
What did you like best about this story?
The way the historic period weaved together and the ups and down of the Medici.
Which character – as performed by Derek Perkins – was your favorite?
Great job in the narrative. No favorites.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
300 Years of Medici. From genius to barely functioning. The results of inbreeding.
Any additional comments?
Highly recommended if you like history and want to fit Florence into the big picture. I learned a lot of interesting facts, none of which I'm going to try to quote to my less interested friends (although I'd love to).

Historia
At age 24 Winston Churchill was utterly convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England one day, despite the fact he had just lost his first election campaign for Parliament. He believed that to achieve his goal, he had to do something spectacular on the battlefield. Despite deliberately putting himself in extreme danger as a British army officer in colonial wars in India and Sudan and as a journalist covering a Cuban uprising against the Spanish, glory and fame had eluded him.

Enjoyable read. Sounds like something written by a good PR man for an upcoming election but I guess true and the basis of the man that was to be an important historic figure.

Will Always Be My Favorite Classic
Revisado: 02-09-17
I probably read this 40+ years ago and saw the movie in the same timeframe. Over the years I could of course remember the basics of the story (Scarlet O'Hara, Sherman's March, "frankly Scarlet I don't give a damn". etc) and who can forget Carol Burnett's skit on Tara and making a gown out of a curtain (which is actually in the book). In short it was s great read, interesting especially if you like history, or fiction based on fact. Can't forget though it's s love story and shows a viewpoint on the relations with slaves and white folk. Not sure I want to read Margaret Mitchell sequel written 50+ years later. Think I'll read the reviews first.
Motivation to reread was my son's move to Atlanta and the hope my grandson would embrace the history of the area.
Highly, highly recommend even for s second time.

The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

I bought the audible about a year ago and enjoyed listening to it on a long vacation ride. With the movie coming out, I was about to recommend it to some friends but could not remember much more that the basic story line. The good side of this is that I got to "read it" again as it kept me awake and alert on a second trip from Las Vegas to Colorado. Am anxious to see how they squeeze this into a two hour movie.

Interesting But Far Fetched
Revisado: 09-13-16
I can't give everything I read 5 Stars so this one had to go down a notch. Interesting story line, a few twists, but I found myself saying "come-on" to some of the heroics. I did think the prose were above average ("snow flakes that looked like..") but that might be because Stephen King doesn't spend a lot of time on prose. Did enjoy it.

Outstanding Performance
Revisado: 08-27-16
Will Patton gives a marvelous narrative performance with a remarkable variation of voices to fit the multiple characters. I thought all three books were tremendous but in thinking about it, without Patton's role it wouldn't have been nearly as enjoyable. I understand a mini-series is coming? I just hope the actors fit Patton's voices.

Historia
A masterful, intensely suspenseful novel about a reader whose obsession with a reclusive writer goes far too far - a book about the power of storytelling, starring the same trio of unlikely and winning heroes King introduced in Mr. Mercedes. "Wake up, genius." So begins King's instantly riveting story about a vengeful reader. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn't published a book for decades.

Am just getting into Stephen King. Enjoyed to first volume of the trilogy better. Didn't think King expanded on the three main characters as much as I expected. I see more "King" coming in the last volume.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Great Read, Keeps You Guessing
Revisado: 05-28-16
What made the experience of listening to Gone Girl the most enjoyable?
Interesting although screwed up characters. Great Audible in a 10 hour car ride-kept me awake.
What other book might you compare Gone Girl to and why?
None other like it. I'm just getting back to reading fiction.
Which scene was your favorite?
Can't pick a scene. Lots of twists. The only one I guessed right about was the method of her "escape."
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Tag Line = Keeps You Guessing. I have not seen the movie although I can see Ben Affleck in the lead. Will be interesting how they play it out as the full book plot seems to be too long for the big screen. I wonder how they will end it--the same???
