Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Story telling with interwoven primary source voices. Incredibly researched, brilliant work!

Loved it! This book really transported you to time. And was engaging throughout. I’ve come away with such a richer understanding of this time. And the very human emotions that drove the start of the Civil War.

Historia
While this nation has yet to elect its first woman president—and though history has downplayed her role—just over a century ago a woman became the nation’s first acting president. In fact, she was born in 1872, and her name was Edith Bolling Galt Wilson. For the first time, we have a biography that takes an unflinching look at the woman whose ascent mirrors that of many powerful American women before and since, one full of the compromises and complicities women have undertaken throughout time in order to find security for themselves and make their mark on history.

Glad I read it
Revisado: 04-19-23
I didn’t really resonate with Mrs Wilson’s life or ideas, but I thought that Boggs Roberts work as a historian was superb. Some of the press about this book and the character of Mrs Wilson was quite misleading. In the end, I found her main attributes were her controlling and petty nature ( not a drive to engage in policy, diplomacy, or influence international affairs as you might have expected after hearing the author interviewed on NPR).
I wish more time was spend on WWI. I also wish there had been some acknowledgement of the Spanish flu and then later how Edith was affected by the Great Depression. Perhaps the historical record didn’t give the author much to go on here.
Nonetheless it was a fascinating portrait of a powerful woman in an era quite different than our own.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Compelling look at wwII through the lives of two sisters
Revisado: 07-16-21
When I started the Nightingale, I wasn’t sure how much I loved it. The characters initially seemed a little one-dimensional, the plot initially seemed a little played out, formulaic. As the book progressed however I began to appreciate how the author was challenging me to think about World War II in a different way than I had ever thought about it through my readings of history textbooks and the stories of war that predominantly revolve around men. This story captures the warThat women waged in France . Not just through the formal resistance, But in the seemingly small Every day choices. I was especially compelled by the character of Vienne. Maybe there are other books out there that highlight the war they way women like Vienne experienced it, but this is the first I’ve read. IIf I were in their shoes when I’d be more like Isabelle or Vienne? Great read. Very emotional ending. So happy I stuck it out!

I loved how the author explored her characters relationship with science and religion without dismissing or discounting either. Well written, good book.

Excellent performance
Revisado: 04-07-21
I can’t stop thinking about this book, about this time, and about these characters since I finished this book yesterday. The mother daughter relationship in this book was so compelling, fraught with tension but also teamwork. I don’t think I’ve ever listed to an audiobook with a better narration. The performer really brought the characters to life. So well done. This one will stick with me awhile!

Revisado: 03-26-21
Highly entertaining. Narrator brings the story to life and reads with appropriate intensity. I think I still prefer the story and suspense of recursion to this book. Blake crouch is a great writer!

Neat concept, performance just ok
Revisado: 03-12-21
I loved how this book got me thinking about what it must have been like to be a midwife in the west circa 1895. I wish the performer would have chosen not to try to imitate male voices for male characters- I found it distracting and off-putting. The plot kept me entertained, even if a little predictable in the final dramatic scenes towards the end. Overall an entertaining read - would recommend to a friend :)

Underwhelmed by the ending
Revisado: 03-12-21
I was so excited for this book after all the hype it got in the media. In the end I felt like the author just sort of gave up...there was so much more left to be explored. I liked Jude’s character a lot but felt most of the others were under-developed and one dimensional. Overall just ok. I wouldn’t recommend to a friend.
