Historia
Provence, 1347. Eleanore (Elea) Blanchet is a young midwife and herbalist with remarkable skills. But as she learned the day her mother died, the most dangerous thing a woman can do is draw attention to herself. She attends patients in her home city of Avignon, spends time with her father and twin sister, gathers herbs in the surrounding woods, and dreams of the freedom to pursue her calling without fear.

outstanding historical novel
Revisado: 04-20-25
This is the best book I've read in a long time. The imagery was deliciously rich and realistic for the era. I didn't want it to end! After watching documentaries about the middle ages, I began searching out historical fiction to make the era more real in my mind's eye. When I found this novel, I truly struck gold. I know that the story will stay with me for a long time, fiction or not. It felt real to me.

Historia
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Revisado: 11-29-22
The techniques described so carefully in this book are no less than life changing, if you practice often and diligently. I felt different and better after only one session of the exercises at the end. This is one of the most important, most useful books I will ever own.

Historia
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Outstanding in every way
Revisado: 11-12-22
I read it first at 16 or so, and many times since. I've read all of the LOTR books and seen all the movies several times, noting the discrepancies. I recently finished the Silmarillion audio version. So I'm pretty familiar with the stories. It was an immense pleasure to sit back and listen to this narrator tell me stories I already knew but had only heard my own voice tell them. This gave the hobbit story a brilliant new life!

I never read it as a child, but wish I had! I would have adored it, as I do now. The narration is wonderful too!

Historia
Feel like you don’t belong? You’re not alone. The world has never been more connected, yet people are lonelier than ever. Whether we feel unworthy, alienated, or anxious about our place in the world, the absence of belonging is the great silent wound of our times. Most people think of belonging as a mythical place, and they spend a lifetime searching for it in vain. But what if belonging isn’t a place at all? What if it’s a skill that has been lost or forgotten? With her signature depth and eloquence, Toko-pa maps a path to belonging from the inside out.

the power of the writer's voice
Revisado: 03-05-20
I highly recommend this audible version of this book. Listening to Toko-pa Turner's voice read her own book is something so special. Even if you bought the hardcopy, I hope you will get to experience the audible version. I was moved to tears so many times and felt deep heart connections with the lilt and subtle tones of her voice, especially when talking about deeply painful things. Hearing a book this way adds something new and totally different, almost like the power of hearing my own voice speaking my own truth.

This book contained so many beautiful ideas and practical ways to use them! Some I had even thought of before, but due to my own upper limit problem, I didn't believe them worthy. Now I have the ticket to my future!

Gut wrenching, beautiful, unforgettable
Revisado: 11-05-19
This is my first Toni Morrison novel. I am so glad I chose to hear it, read by her, rather than read it. Her voice adds so much more richness to a thing already dripping with richness. The truth in it hurt deeply to hear, but I would rather know that truth than remain ignorant.

Another top notch book from DJD
Revisado: 10-24-19
Narrator was excellent! Aussie accent I think. A poor narrator can ruin an audible book for me, so I especially appreciate his superb performance. The content of this book is truly life altering, paradigm shattering, as usual for Dr. Joe. I wish the meditations were available on a CD with the book, but it's certainly easy enough to listen and type them up for yourself.
