Historia
In the first of three essays included in this audiobook, Bill Bryson decides to move his wife and kids back to his homeland, the United States, after nearly two decades in Britain. But not before taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. The result is a hilarious social commentary.

He has such a subtle wit that I love
Revisado: 01-14-25
I love his sly sense of humor and slightly sarcastic undertone. His amusing views about the people he knows and the people he meets in his travels just crack me up. Best of all, he narrates these books, not a professional reader, so you get the full Bryson experience.
My only critique is his use of what are now considered socially unacceptable names of the mentally ill and challenged residents he worked for at a long term care facility in the 1970s, something I wish he would go back and correct in the audiobook I listened to.

Did you know that there are more penises than women in the Bayeux Tapestry? That the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 was started and propelled by women who were protesting a tax on women? Or that Charles Darwin believed not just that women were naturally inferior to men, but that they’d evolve to become ever more inferior? These are just a few of the startling findings you will learn from listening to Philippa Gregory’s Normal Women. In this ambitious book, she tells the story of England over 900 years, for the very first time placing women—some fifty per cent of the population—center stage.

Loved her subtle English sarcasm in appropriate moments. Loved that she took on 1000 years of female oppression at all levels of society and showed that we still have a long way to go, baby (Boomer/GenX reference there, lol).

Historia
From the story of the desperate man from 17th-century Amsterdam who grimly cut a stone out of his own bladder to Bob Marley's deadly toe, Under the Knife offers a wealth of fascinating and unforgettable insights into medicine and history via the operating room. What happens during an operation? How does the human body respond to being attacked by a knife, a bacterium, a cancer cell, or a bullet? And, as medical advances continuously push the boundaries of what medicine can cure, what are the limits of surgery?

I liked the historical aspect of these 28 procedures, as horrifying as some of then were. Kudos to the addition at the end to include female doctors and suegeons.

Historia
In the early 1900s, women were dying in large numbers from treatable diseases because they avoided receiving medical care. Examinations performed by male doctors were often demeaning and even painful. In addition, women faced stigma from illness—a diagnosis could greatly limit their ability to find husbands, jobs or be received in polite society. Motivated by personal loss and frustration over inadequate medical care, Elizabeth Blackwell, Lizzie Garret Anderson and Sophie Jex-Blake fought for a woman's place in the male-dominated medical field.

Revisado: 05-07-24
I learned something completely new about the outrageous odds these brave women had to repeatedly fight to be accepted as doctors at the same level as men. It was terrible the amount of misogyny they had to overcome.

Historia
The year was 1917. As a war raged across the world, young American women flocked to work, painting watches, clocks, and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous - the girls themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in the dust from the paint. They were the radium girls. As the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses.

Another tale of corporate greed
Revisado: 05-05-24
This book highlights yet another sad chapter of American corporate greed taking precedence over the health and safety of the workers, hiring hacks to suppress and lie about evidence, and absolute refusal to take any accountability for the sickness and deaths they deliberately perpetrated on these women for over 50 years.
This is why we need strong state and federal oversight of rules and regulations for rapacious greedy corporate types who treat us workers as less than nothing but replaceable widgets in their quest for more money.

Part 3, "What's Wrong with Christianity", critiques the bible (its reliability as well as its morality) and the historical evidence for Jesus. In Miracles and Mayhem in the ER, Dr. Brent Russell shares true-life stories of his early days as an emergency room doctor. Contemplative and oftentimes hilarious, Dr. Russell leads the listener through the glass doors and down the narrow halls of the ER where desperate patients, young and old, come to get well. Occasionally heart wrenching and always fast-paced, Miracles and Mayhem in the ER will have listeners holding their breath one second and celebrating the next.

badly needed editing
Revisado: 01-23-24
I agree with a previous commenter about this book seriously needing editing. I think the author meant well by sharing his stories but it sounded amateurish and not in a good way.
The reader also made up weird accents they came and went randomly, his emphasis on the wrong words was annoying, and the ups and downs of the volume level of his voice was weird and irritating.
Had this book gone through a more vigorous and expert editing process, it would have made the book more engaging. In my opinion tightening up and getting rid of some of the endless metaphors would have also helped. No need to go off on tangents about how hard a procedure will be and hammering home the "life or death" faux suspense before getting to the point.
