Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

The Next Classic Novel
Revisado: 02-03-20
American Dirt is a modern-day wonder. It was a surprisingly wonderful read, full of gritty truth and unforeseen hardships. I would not be surprised if this book becomes required reading in high schools across North, Central, and South America.

Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Engaging, deep, and funny
Revisado: 02-03-20
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry was a surprising look at the life of a book store owner on a small, out of the way, island. A cross between a romantic comedy and a mystery; it kind of reminded me of Big Fish - in the storytelling, and the romantic underdog film of Stranger Than Fiction. This was a fantastic read. I've recommended it to several people.

Historia
From the author of When We Lost Our Heads, a spellbinding story about two gifted orphans - in love with each other since they can remember - whose childhood talents allow them to rewrite their future. The Lonely Hearts Hotel is a love story with the power of legend. An unparalleled tale of charismatic pianos, invisible dance partners, radicalized chorus girls, drug-addicted musicians, brooding clowns, and an underworld whose economy hinges on the price of a kiss. In a landscape like this, it takes great creative gifts to thwart one’s origins.

So dirty, so, so dirty.
Revisado: 02-03-20
Surprisingly dirty. Set in the 1920s - this book explores, primarily, the graphic sexual exploits of a pair of orphans as they bang, lick, and suck their way through adolescence and into adulthood. I will say it has a surprising ending.

This book is total garbage; Would not recommend.
Revisado: 02-22-19
The book is filled with contradictions. It's obvious the author isn't trauma informed. The second to last chapter he openly admits to forcing a barley aged out foster child out of his home because she refused to go to church, and jokes about his wife turning off the hot water on the child while she was in the shower.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

"Don't Cross The Streams!"
Revisado: 10-22-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Nerd Do Well to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version, though I imagine that the audio version blows the print version out of the water!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Canterbury the metro-sexual android was my favorite character simply because who wouldn't like a robot with tits painted on its chest plate?!
Which scene was your favorite?
I really enjoyed Pegg's description of the making of Shawn of the Dead.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not particularly, but I don't think it was supposed to be a moving book.
Any additional comments?
Simon needs to stop being a twat and write another book! I would love to read it!

In his best-selling The Russians, Hedrick Smith took millions of readers inside the Soviet Union. In The Power Game, he took us inside Washington’s corridors of power. Now Smith takes us across America to show how seismic changes, sparked by a sequence of landmark political and economic decisions, have transformed America. As only a veteran reporter can, Smith fits the puzzle together, starting with Lewis Powell’s provocative memo that triggered a political rebellion that dramatically altered the landscape of power from then until today.

Revisado: 09-07-14
What would have made Who Stole the American Dream? better?
I was reading this book for a class. So had I actually chosen it to read for myself, I suppose it would have been better.
What do you think your next listen will be?
The Blind Watchmaker - Richard Dawkins
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Rob Shapiro?
Lewis Black
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Well, the premise of the book sucked because who wants to find out they have been getting screwed?! Nobody!
