Should I be a rapist?

He keeps talking about ravishing women. Ravish meams rape. He also talks about giving my gifts and doesn't specify what kind of gift it is, but probably rape.

It says inquisition wasn't that bad

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-21-21

People liked the inquisition, it got rid of heretics who send people to hell, so it was good. The church can do it because it inherited authority from Peter and negative view of inquisition was made up by protestants and enlightenment people. And the killing was done by secular leaders, not by the church.

Quick conclusions against Atheism

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 02-10-20

So children were asked "What caused the first flood?" and most popular answer was "someone". So they believe in god. Hahahahahaha. It was a loaded question that already assumes that there is something external which causes things. They should have asked "Do you have an idea HOW the first flood happened?" I think they would honestly say no or give a natural explanation.

But it's true that the idea "someone did it" for natural phenomena might be easily acceptable and that was the beginning of religion. The god of gaps. The author realizes it, but he's running away from the conclusion that religion is therefore man-made. Instead he philosophises that just because the source of the belief is irrational, maybe it happens to be true also. Hahaha.

The author doesn't seem to be a fundamentalist. He accepts evolution created by god.

In the end he "debunks" Atheism by an argument that Atheists trust their reason, but they shouldn't if reason is a product of evolution. But if evolution was created by god then we can trust reason. Hahaha.

Great ideas of philosophy IN THEIR TIME

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 02-03-20

Newton figured out we can use math to describe physics!!! wow.

If you want to learn about history of philosophy, this is good, but if you want to enrich your own philosophy then these ideas are outdated, obvious or debunked.

Although I wasn't convinced by all his arguments. This science seems to be on a shaky ground with many speculations. Also some of the information about languages far from English might be little inaccurate. But I definitely learned new info and it was fun.

So it is kinda balanced. He doesn't want to promote the Quran, but to understand it on its own merits. Like "Let's not focus on whether it's true, but let's try to understand what it's trying to say".

I would correct 2 things. Firstly he claims that the Quran is much better in Arabic and compares his monotonous reading of the English translation with a girl passionately SINGING the Arabic Quran. That's not about the Arabic Quran, but about singing versus reading! If he was singing passionately the English translation and she was reading the Arabic version in monotonous voice, the English Quran would make a bigger impression! And secondly, the division of jihad on lesser and greater jihad is based on a fake hadith.

And that's why he asked only apologists in his book. If you've heard Case for Christ, hear this book because it complements it.

I enjoyed it

I appreciate his passion for this subject. I experienced some epiphanies. It gave me historical context. Amenhotep IV - the first monotheist! I've never heard of him before. Now I don't see Egypt as a foreign isolated culture. We borrowed quite a few things from them.

The author went from 100% believer to 100% Atheist. That's amazing. And he now has very profound arguments for Atheism. It seems most ex-believers still have some old thinking, but Dan Barker got completely deprogrammed.

Too religious for me

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 07-28-19

He said you need a higher power and although he said it doesn't have to be a god and it can be for example this program.. but how can this program be a higher power? He also thinks that "prophet" Muhammad "peace be upon him" must have been onto something. Yes, he was addicted to power and sex! Maybe the method could be transformed into a secular one, but he's just presenting it too religiously.
