I don’t doubt she has vast historical knowledge, but listening to her go on and on about protofeminism and marginalized people at every opportunity just makes me cringe internally and I couldn’t get to the end. And her reciting poems in medieval French isn’t about enlightening her audience, it’s about demonstrating her arcane knowledge. I know who she’s aiming her lecture series at, and it isn’t me.

Always interesting, always hilarious
Revisado: 06-19-23
John McWhorter never fails to disappoint. His love for and astonishing breadth of knowledge of languages constantly shine through in his lectures, which are richly seasoned with anecdotes, digressions and irreverent and frequently self-deprecating humor. His lectures meander live a lazy river through a lush valley, and you sort of drift along enjoying it, but somehow the current keeps pulling you forward. I’m frankly not quite sure how he manages to keep his train of thought, But he manages to make linguistics seem like the most rewarding of fields while at the same time assuring you that it’s a minefield of politics and dysfunctional people, ha ha. Definitely worth listening to.

Revisado: 05-02-23
I was having a great time listening to this and was really looking forward to the series and then at the end they tell us the author was admitted to the hospital a day after he finished the book and he died. That’s so incredibly sad. God bless his family.

Monsters and beasts roamed the earth and were slain by soldiers and adventurers who were, in turn, killed by stronger threats. Heroes and villains created new epics and were forgotten when their successors appeared. This was the way of the Infinite World. Summoned into this chaotic place, a young boy with no name and no past must learn to survive. Bound to a master who doesn't care whether he lives or dies, he must become stronger. The question is: how?

More of a Good Course than a Great Course
- De Flavius Krakdaddius en 11-02-15
A great lecture with a human touch
Revisado: 01-03-23
As with all good lecturers, Prof Weiner’s broad and deep knowledge of the subject matter may be the basis of his course, but his enthusiasm for the subject and his love of sharing knowledge are what captures your attention. I’m from Brooklyn, so after living in the south for two decades, his voice reminds me of home; if his performance is perhaps not as polished as that of some other Great Courses readers, that only makes it more endearing to me.
What really struck me was his humility and humanity, especially at the end of the course, where he paid tribute to his mentors, colleagues, family, and took the trouble to praise the folks at Great Courses. He’s a mensch. May God bless him and all his endeavors.

Highly relatable
Revisado: 11-17-22
Professor Gregory illustrates the history of science during the age of revolution with humor and an obvious love of the subject matter. He paints brief biographical portraits of natural philosophers and scientists, and one feels a connection to the early scientific community through the humanity of the members. The historical fact that science and faith can exist simultaneously, in conflict and in complement, in the mind of a highly intelligent, creative and rational person is one we should recognize when evaluating modern science and modern scientists.

Wonderful introduction to strategic thought
Revisado: 10-03-22
Erudite, approachable, and engaging, Dr. Wilson gives his auditors access to the essential toolkit of strategic thinking without “passing the culminating point of victory” and inundating us with too much detail. He moves easily between theory and narrative, to both support the ideas of the masters and to provide counter-examples where their ideas fell short, or had to be reassessed in the face of technological advancement. Well done, sir.

True to both canons sort of
Revisado: 01-02-22
Imagine Sherlock Holmes versus eldritch horrors from beyond time and space, with the stories recorded by his faithful friend, Dr. Watson, in his secret memoirs. That’s it; that’s the book. A marriage of Doyle and Lovecraft has been tried before but this really captures the tone and the characters, and uses the Noble Lie trope to mesh the canons. After all, there are things that Man Was Not Meant To Know. Excellent work by Kleinman; Holmes and Watson are spot-on.
