Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Not King's best work
Revisado: 11-02-22
The characters weren't engaging. Too much fantacy for me to suspend disbelief. The reading was slow. Speeding it up to 1.25 brought it to natural cadence, but I took it to 1.50 to slog through it faster.

It's okay if you are into 19th century authors
Revisado: 10-11-22
I personally find the 19th century authors too naive, and heavy on the passive voice. I should have read more of the description before buying this book. I saw the 2006 release date, and assumed that was first publication. The narration was very stilted. The voice and cadence was nearly the same for young French girl in conversation or adult English man in a fist fight.

Historia
Today's "machine-learning" systems, trained by data, are so effective that we've invited them to see and hear for us - and to make decisions on our behalf. But alarm bells are ringing. Systems cull résumés until, years later, we discover that they have inherent gender biases. Algorithms decide bail and parole - and appear to assess black and white defendants differently. We can no longer assume that our mortgage application, or even our medical tests, will be seen by human eyes. And autonomous vehicles on our streets can injure or kill.

This was a great overview of current AI and Machine Learning in a very accessible and entertaining writing style. I learned a lot about ethical and safety issues in AI. Good information on human and machine learning theories, Excellent section on the pitfalls of aligning goals with outcomes in reinforcement learning.

Historia
A United Nations relief team in a small village in the Congo makes an alarming discovery. An unknown force is leveling the evolutionary playing field. Men, women, and children have been reduced to a dull, catatonic state. The environment surrounding them—plants and animals—has grown more cunning and predatory, evolving at an exponential pace. The insidious phenomenon is spreading from a cursed site in the jungle — known to locals as the Kingdom of Bones —and sweeping across Africa, threatening the rest of the world.

Action packed technothriller

In When Christ and His Saints Slept, the first of a trilogy that will tell the story of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, master storyteller and historian Sharon Kay Penman illuminates one of the less known but fascinating periods of English history. It begins with the death of King Henry I, son of William the Conqueror and father of Maude, his only living legitimate offspring.

a little slow to get into, but worth it.
Revisado: 11-07-19
it was a little slow to get into. In the beginning, the book didn't describe events that happened, but instead described conversations about events that happened after the fact. Later there was more description of events as they happened. It kept my interest, and I learned something about that period of history

This book does not work in audio.
Revisado: 03-22-18
The recording quality was poor. It sounded like it was recorded in a very live room (echos), rather than a recording studio. That fact alone was very distracting. Much of this book was audio recitation of computer source code mainly in python, which is complete gibberish when delivered in audio format.

Historia
Already internationally acclaimed for his elegant, lucid writing on the most challenging notions in modern physics, Sean Carroll is emerging as one of the greatest humanist thinkers of his generation as he brings his extraordinary intellect to bear not only on the Higgs boson and extra dimensions but now also on our deepest personal questions. Where are we? Who are we? Are our emotions, our beliefs, and our hopes and dreams ultimately meaningless out there in the void?

good physics, too much anti-theology
Revisado: 07-02-17
The physics was pretty good, but large portions of the book were devoted to arguments for atheism and poetic naturalism. I have no problem with Carroll being atheist and mentioning that in the book, but much of the book was devoted to arguing against a creator.

So much of our human body is made up of salt that we'd be dead without it. The fine balance of nature, the trade of salt as a currency of many nations and empires, the theme of a popular Shakespearean play... Salt is best selling author Mark Kurlansky's story of the only rock we eat.

Interesting story but recipes got in the way
Revisado: 10-14-13
Would you consider the audio edition of Salt to be better than the print version?
The story was interesting. I learned a lot. It was interesting to see the political, economic, and environmental impact that this common household product, had on world history. The one negative about the audio version of this book is that the text is broken up with recipes relevant to the chapters. While a reader can easily glance over the recipe, and skip to the next section of prose, the audio listener doesn't have that luxury, and the recipes for sour kraut and soy sauce are not very useful in audio form.

The author of Cod and The Basque History of the World takes an extraordinary look at an ordinary substance — salt, the only rock humans eat — and how it has shaped civilization from the very beginning. Mark Kurlansky has produced a kaleidoscope of history, a multi-layered masterpiece that blends economic, scientific, political, religious, and culinary records into a rich and memorable tale.

Not good for a casual listen while commuting.
Revisado: 07-10-11
I'm about half way through, but I have little idea of what is going on. It is very hard to follow. One criticism that I haven't seen in this list is that several of the characters are named either Anne or Thomas, and the author makes little effort to differentiate them in conversations. I was about half way through the first section, when for several minutes there was a description of how Anne, who I thought was Anne Boleyn, died. Since Anne Boleyn is integral to the rest of the story, I had to figure out which Anne the author was talking about.
