If you love truth - raw, real truth - this book is for you. I feel honored to bear witness as a listener to this beautiful distillation of a difficult life made better. You do not need to be a songwriter to love this but if you are .. this is essential reading/listening.

lots of violence & dead parents

definitely made the kiddo laugh but there was way more violence in this - with unnecessarily graphic detail - than the summary let on. also dead parents and graphic telling of seeing Mom fall to her death. definitely scary for my 9yo who has dealt with lots of death this year.

A treasure

While this book is written for her sons, it feels like a letter we all need. It is instructive, compassionate, fierce, philosophical, and practical. As a white Mom, it deepened my understanding of and compassion for the differences in the types of conversations Black and other Moms of color are having, and gave me insight into how to speak to my own white son about the work we still need to do. And as a Mom more generally, I hope some day I can gift my own child even a fraction of the wisdom Ms. Perry offers her sons here. Truly this is a treasure.
