Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Characters that are hard to leave
Revisado: 09-27-19
This book is Not a disappointment. I was not wowed by some parts of the ending, but the extremely detailed characterizations and descriptions made up for what I didn’t like. King’s young adults are real, as usual. It is way way better than Revival or The Outsider and not quite as good as Dr. Sleep. The book’s insight and craftsmanship grows on you. Also, Fontana’s narration is great.

The interviews with the survivors were the best part. These women are definitely models of perseverance and honesty. I wish some proceeds from Audible sales of this piece could go to organizations that prevent child abuse and help other survivors.

Even better than When Dimple
Revisado: 05-18-19
I pre-ordered this to get a five dollar credit without knowing anything about the author’s
work. When I was waiting for it, I read When Dimple and fell in love with both books. This one is the kind of YA novel that I wish I could write, filled with the kind of characters that I wish all kids could have for friends. The characters are funny, sweet, and real. They are family, friend, and school focused, but they are not cardboard stereotypes. Menon’s protagonists are fabulous role models without being too cheesy. They earn their successes. And yes, there’s lots of romantic tension, but not a lot of bare skin. This was so good that I finished it in two days.

In Jesmyn Ward's first novel since her National Book Award-winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural 21st-century America. An intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle, Sing, Unburied, Sing journeys through Mississippi's past and present, examining the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power - and limitations - of family bonds.

Not an easy read, but a worthwhile one.
Revisado: 08-06-18
I had to start this book over several times, and I nearly gave up once or twice because of the brutal situations that the characters were in. It reminded me of both Zora Neale Hurston and Toni Morrison’s work, but with an extra contemporary, original kick. Ward is definitely a poet and the writing is beautiful, though perhaps it is not for those who cannot deal with bits of magical realism. She makes you feel compassion for all the characters, even the ones that are seriously flawed, and she breaks stereotypes while she does it. My favorite character was the toddler baby sister. There are no cookie-cutter happy endings here, but there is deep healing and redemption. Listen to the end. It is worth it and will leave you thinking.

Masterful sleeper
Revisado: 03-17-17
I am so glad I got this, thanks to other positive reviews on Audible. It was something of a sleeper for me. I saw the BBC early 80s production as a young person, but I didn't remember how it ended and I had never read the book. I am totally floored by Tey's ability to create both major and minor complex characters, (the latter category including both horses and small girls) get inside their heads, and make you care about them as much as you do the resolution of their dilemmas. Unlike the populations and situations of many today's mysteries, most of the novel's characters are genuinely likable, all without being smarmy or flat, and evil is not represented as being irresistible. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes classic, tightly plotted, character driven British mysteries. I'll definitely be listening to it again and enjoying the writing and reading.

An honest, searching, poetic memoir that I'd recommend to anyone who loves writing, feminism 19th and early 20th century women's history or fascinating stories of how creative single women make their way in the world. Get it and allow yourself to be surprised!

Real and twisted
Revisado: 07-22-15
Excellently written and performed. I couldn't stop listening, even while I was cringing. This is alternately funny (expect jet blackness), horrifying, and poignant, with plenty of literary allusions. It's low on gore and high on disturbing social and psychological details. I won't be listening to it again, but I also won't be forgetting it soon either.

Historia
Star of stage, film, and television Alan Cumming delivers a virtuoso performance playing every role in the National Theatre of Scotland's bold presentation of Shakespeare's chilling tale of desire, ambition, and the supernatural. This radical reimagining of one of Shakespeare's most deeply psychological plays is set in a psychiatric unit in which Cumming is the lone patient. Channeling the story of Macbeth, he is inhabited in turn by each of the characters of the drama, including some of Shakespeare's most complex and troubled creations.

Chilling, Moving, Genius
Revisado: 07-27-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. Alan Cumming is a wonderful chameleon with a huge range which goes beyond even the fey, compelling characters that he often plays on film and stage. Here, he makes the play totally accessible. He does sincere justice to the title couple.
Would you ever listen to anything by William Shakespeare again?
Of course, but especially when it's done like this.
Have you listened to any of Alan Cumming’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I've listened to Leviathan and Behemoth, enjoyed them, and admired Cumming's skill, but he's working on an even higher level here.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. It definitely compels repeat listening because it is so good.
Any additional comments?
I have read, seen, and taught this play many times. I wasn't sure I needed this version. I did, and I would especially recommend it to anyone who is Shakespeare phobic, or who has to read the play for school. This actor clearly knows, loves, and understands the play. After listening to him, you will, too.
