This story was frustratingly ignorant. I’m around the author’s age. Back in the 1990s-2000s information was physically harder to obtain but you could find out a lot more than now. Phone books listed name, number & address. Libraries carried other area phone books. We had 411 info. Could call other city’s information and get the info. One could physically go to the county clerk’s office and dig up info like deeds, voter’s registration, etc. When it comes to criminals, one could access microfiche and go look up criminal records at county courthouses. She never educated herself about who her aggressors were or even who Karen and Hal were, but poured all sorts of emotional energy and effort (which she reiterates over and over- her feelings and emotions) into being scared and bewildered. She goes to the FBI with all the email documentation but never compares the emails to each other until after the FBI meeting. She continues to open emails & at one point agrees to attend a kink-fest! No! I would have bought a gun, btw, and learned how to use it. Having a hard time believing ALL of this story. I found myself yelling at the story. At first, I, too, would have been scared then at some point I would have gotten mad and started blocking emails which was available during the 2000s & started digging for information. Victim blaming you say? At some point one has to be proactive. If you want to be aggravated, incredulous, and annoyed for four hours then this is for you. It’s about 2.5 hours too long and then the story just won’t end! It’s like a train wreck, you just can’t look away.

Started rooting for the Serial Killer

I've seen Nora Roberts books all over. I guess I didn't understand that Nora Roberts is actually a romance novelist who dabbles in crime stories or at least that's the case with this book. Without investigating her exact genre (my fault), I decided to give it a try as Audible put this in my murder mystery feed (grrr). This story could have gone in so many better directions.

ON A SERIOUS NOTE: If you are recovering from alcoholism or are struggling with alcohol, bypass this book. Roberts glamorizes alcohol. She paints pretty pictures of sitting in a beautiful settings drinking with everyone (everyone is happy, of course, and no one gets out of control) which makes you want to indulge. Roberts makes drinking alcohol attractive, enticing and worse yet, NORMAL. Yes, the main character is a bartender, but she spends a lot of time describing drinks and how to make them and the picture-perfect settings in which they are consumed.

Morgan is a strong self-sufficient young (beautiful) woman with absolutely no character flaws who becomes the damsel in distress. Morgan's last romance was with a serial killer who utterly destroys her life when she falls for Miles in pretty short order and, just like the serial killer, he is Mr Perfect. Are you kidding me?!? Morgan should have spent money to have a complete background check done on Miles but no! Logic dictates it would have taken a long time to gain trust again after that kind of trauma, but the over-the-stop storybook romance blossoms and blossoms and blossoms. But hey! She's Miss Perfect and all the people in her and his respective families are supportive, loving, respectful of each other and, oh, successful. The straw that broke the story is when Miles essentially becomes an expert criminologist at one point. That narration should have come from one of the FBI profilers not hotelier/boyfriend Miles. Then, lo and behold, Miles' grandparents become amateur criminologists. The characters are sickening sweet. It's nothing more than an over-the-top romance novel with a crime storyline. Three-quarters through, I actually started rooting for the serial killer, Roswell. By the way, why didn't the FBI agents secure the families more carefully when Roswell started heading east? I wasted a credit.

Meh. There's a lot or artistic license but Alison Wier does that with all her books otherwise they would be bland stories. Just wasn't pulled into this one.

I read a lot of historical fiction. I hold the Matthew Shardlake series and Sam Burnell's series of books as my pinnacle. Both of those authors make you feel, smell and see the time period. When I read/hear the story, the movie rolls in my head.
I just couldn't picture the time or place. I could picture Sister Fidelma but I just couldn't get the movie rolling in my head. I understand Peter Tremayne was staying true to the names of the age but I had a hard time keeping up with the characters due to the unusualness of their names. I like the idea of an intelligent heroine but I just missed the boat on this one.

These two novels clicked with me. If you like the Matthew Shardlake series or Sam Burnell's novels, this just might be up your alley. I've seen other comments about it being a romance novel. No, it's about a woman's life in a time that was completely foreign to us modern humans. The Old Religion versus the spread of Christianity. If you watched The Mists of Avalon" and were interested in that era, give this a try. I'm looking forward to the next installment very much.

I have listened to and am a huge fan of the CJ Sansom’s Matthew Shardlake series. When we found out of Mr Sansom’s terminal illness not only were we grieved for the fine author himself but the end to a wonderful series that had become a favorite.
Then I downloaded The Unquiet Bones and am thrilled to be listening and enjoying the same well-written Medieval historical mystery.
If you are a Shardlake fan, you’ll be happy with this as well!

Sam Burnell has a faithful and loyal fan in me. I cannot say enough about this series. I squeal with glee whenever her books have been released on audible. I am now on my second listen through all of the books up through book 5. The Tower storyline wore me out a little bit as I am waiting for the William Fitzwarren storyline to move on. But now I'm checking monthly to see when Book 6 will be released.

I started smoking when I was 8. Quit when I was 11 and started again when I was 16. Smoked continuously until I was 34 then quit for 17 years. Then I picked it up again for about a year. I downloaded this book on audible and started listening. I'd listen to it driving, washing dishes, exercising, or out working in the yard.

All I can say is if this is some form of hypnotism or brainwashing, well it works. It's been 3 years since I smoked a cigarette and it's like I've never smoked in my life. For me it's like cigarettes don't exist and never have.

I'm going to listen to his Stop Drinking when I'm ready to remove that obstacle in my life because this one worked so well for me.

And maybe that's why this book just didn't grab me. The narration actually kept my attention but I just found it to be lackluster. I love historical mysteries and other series I really enjoy are Poldark, Shardlake mysteries, and Sam Burnell's books. I can't put my finger on why this novel didn't enthrall me. I was rather bored with it for some reason.
