Historia
FNH Audio presents a reading of Charles Oman's classic military history A History of the Peninsular War. In this first volume, a detailed examination is made of the first years of the war, 1807 to 1809. The campaign is examined from both sides using reference materials from British, French, Spanish, and Portuguese sources. This book covers the invasion of Spain and Napoleon's trickery in luring the Spanish crown into prison. It also features Wellington's first peninsular battle and of course the famous retreat to Corunna and the battle at that place.

Ignorant Reader Botches Historical Classic

Not bad at all
Revisado: 01-11-22
This first volume of the classic history of the war is well narrated and dispite its age, still a very compelling work. An ultimate DEEP DIVE into the subject.
Are some of the narrator's pronunciations not so great? I guess, but most modern listeners won't notice one way or the other.
Recommended for history buffs.

Historia
The French Revolution casts a long shadow, one that reaches into our own time and influences our debates on freedom, equality, and authority. Yet it remains an elusive, perplexing historical event. Its significance morphs according to the sympathies of the viewer, who may see it as a series of gory tableaux, a regrettable slide into uncontrolled anarchy - or a radical reshaping of the political landscape. In this riveting new book, Ian Davidson provides a fresh look at this vital moment in European history. He reveals how it was an immensely complicated and multifaceted revolution....

A very dry and undramatic telling of the French Revolution. Not sure how the author made this exciting chapter in history dull ... but here's the proof.

Holmes Returns

... and brings all the old familier gang with him. The less said about the story, the better. It does not rise to anything by Conan Doyle, but is passable for a first attempt.
The reader does a passable job, but slaughters every accent he attempts. His characterizations of female voices are, likewise, a disaster.

Historia
In 1632, an entire convent in the small French village of Loudun was apparently possessed by the devil. After a sensational and celebrated trial, the convent's charismatic priest Urban Grandier - accused of spiritually and sexually seducing the nuns in his charge - was convicted of being in league with Satan. Then he was burned at the stake for witchcraft. A remarkable true story of religious and sexual obsession, The Devils of Loudun is considered by many to be Brave New World author Aldous Huxley's nonfiction masterpiece.

... if frequent passages in French had been translated into English. The kindle version does just that and is a much more preferable way to enjoy this classic work.

Historia
Entertaining and different, this is an enjoyable study of a flawed yet characterful Prince of Wales seen through the eyes of the women in his life. Edward Vll, who gave his name to the Edwardian Age and died in 1911, was King of England for the final 10 years of his life. He was 59 when at last he came to the throne. Known as Bertie, the eldest son of Victoria and Albert, he was bullied by both his parents.

Great performance of a sad life
Revisado: 04-14-20
To begin ... there are several quotations in French or German which are left untranslated (and several that ARE translated). This inconsistency makes me feel that I have missed out on some subtilties of the narrative. Otherwise the performance was singular.
The subject however was quite sad. The King comes across as a shallow man of his times and a unintentional catalyst in the coming of WW1. As Prince of Wales he was a hedonistic glutton who spent most of his time in pursuit of diversion. As an American I find it quite difficult to grasp the relevance of the UK Monarchy in the Victorian Era (Victoria herself was a mad recluse through most of her reign - and the country seems better off for it.)
Perhaps it's the pageantry ... then and now ... that people need in their lives. If it is the case, then they have paid dearly for it over the centuries.

Disappointing mystery
Revisado: 06-13-19
Well written (or should I say translated) mystery novel that is very well read by several performers. Sadly, however, the promising start grinds to a laborious middle and uninspired resolution that most will see coming long before the characters.
Some great grisly sequences get things moving now and again, but the pace of the work as a whole is poor. Had I not been listening to the audio version I doubt that I would have finished the book.
