It was good
Revisado: 07-14-21
I like books that are realistic. This one is definitely not a run of the mill rom com that I thought it was. It got cringy at the end. It is very well written, the story flows nicely. The narrator does a good job. Again, just.. if you are looking for a feel good book, this is not that book.

Historia
California girl Lola has her life all set up: business degree, handsome fiancé, fast track career, when suddenly, without warning, everything tragically implodes. After years fruitlessly searching for love, marriage, and children, she decides to seek spirituality and meaning far outside the parameters of modern life in the insular, ultraorthodox enclave of Boro Park, Brooklyn. There, fate brings her to the dysfunctional home of newly-widowed Jacob, a devout Torah scholar, whose life is also in turmoil, and whose small children ache for the kindness of a womanly touch.

Chapter 3 was as far as I got. I wanted to like this book, I am watching Mrs Maisel and have a good time. Unfortunately the characters felt forced. The female wants to be a wife in this life style. There is a man who’s wife passed away and cannot take care of himself. Not very much else to the recipe. I was hoping for like able characters and charming dialog but after 3 chapters I felt no desire to invest any more time into them.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

Oh my freaking god. Get on w it
Revisado: 10-24-19
I really wanted to like this book. I love hockey. There is sooooo much introspective narrative that takes up this story. Most of the time there is not enough back story in character build up but this is the complete opposite of that problem.
For every actual action that happens there is a 30 minute dive back into the past to why the character feel the way he or she does. I get it they all have baggage they all have a past. It does not need to be brought up to move the story forward.
I found myself lost and drifting off even though I wanted to know what was going to happen. I thought is the narrator off somehow. Then I realized there was so much fluff stuffed into this story that I could not stay engaged.

Extremely disappointing
Revisado: 10-23-19
I could see where the author was going w the story. I was supposed to feel conflicting emotions for the father but he never had any redeeming qualities that made me feel that way. The author clearly wanted to portray the mother as a battered wife w codependent issues. I never felt sorry for her. The story was long winded.
The narrator has a pleasant voice over all. However, she can not do male voices at all.

Historia
On paper, college dropout Pablo Rind doesn’t have a whole lot going for him. His graveyard shift at a 24-hour deli in Brooklyn is a struggle. Plus, he’s up to his eyeballs in credit card debt. Pop juggernaut Leanna Smart has enough social media followers to populate whole continents. The brand is unstoppable. Her life is a queasy blur of private planes, step-and-repeats, aspirational hotel rooms, and strangers screaming for her just to notice them. When Leanna and Pablo meet at 5:00 a.m. at the bodega in the dead of winter it’s absurd to think they’d be A Thing.

I liked it
Revisado: 10-09-19
I thought the book was good. Mary h k is becoming one of my favorite authors. She has really funny dialog. Super witty.
I thought this was going to be like a romance hybrid but it was more coming of age. I am finding out I like this genre bcz I did a lot of dumb stuff growing up and I can relate.
The only gripe I have is that I could not listen to the story without adjusting the volume. Vikas is a good narrator. When he changes characters the pitch of his voice goes higher than when he reads the storyline. He reads kind of soft anyway It would hurt my ears. Idk if that is something the audio Dept. Should smooth out or if the narrator needs to keep a constant volume.
Other than that I think it was a good book, I would imagine it was challenging to write this kind of book from the opposite sex’s point of view but I would say the author pulled it off.

Revisado: 08-24-19
The dialog was amazing !! The male narrator had the opportunity to really shine with what the author wrote. I liked the female narration, she did good with the dry humor and sarcasm. I still really enjoyed the story, can not wait to hear the next one.
