Riveting, essential listen
Revisado: 05-11-24
Great listen. Every westerner should listen to this first before using the word "genocide" for anyone other than the Armenians. Read the Revelation and tell me what the Ottomans did wasn't foretold by John. Some things never change.

Historia
Between 1937 and 1945, approximately 55 million people perished in the series of interrelated conflicts known as the Second World War. No continent was left untouched, no ocean unaffected. The war led to the eclipse of Europe and the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as global superpowers; ushered in the atomic age; produced, in the Holocaust, the most horrific crime ever committed in the history of Western civilization, and led to the end of Europe's colonial empires around the world.

Revisado: 06-15-21
Nothing personal, but I feel for the students of this lecturer. I don't know how it has a 4.7 rating on 1705 reviews. Mangled pronunciations, mixed metaphors, stale and often tone-deaf clichés, it was a painful listen. Candidly, a superficial treatment and if you've read anything at all you've heard this or similar. I plodded through it only by virtue of the sunk cost fallacy.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Historia
Most Christians are familiar with the Apostle Paul's teaching that Christ is the "Bridegroom" and the Church is the "Bride." But what does this really mean? And what would ever possess Paul to compare the death of Christ to the love of a husband for his wife? If you would have been at the Crucifixion, with Jesus hanging there dying, is that how you would have described it? How could a first-century Jew like Paul, who knew how brutal Roman crucifixions were, have ever compared the execution of Jesus to a wedding?

Where are we? Who are we? Are our emotions, our beliefs, and our hopes and dreams ultimately meaningless out there in the void?

Biased, immature, ignorant and woefully uneducated. An anti-religious, self-absorbed diatribe. There is a way to talk about science, philosophy and religion dispassionately, objectively, and graciously. This is not it. Can I have my five hours back?

Historia
In this strikingly original and groundbreaking audiobook, Dr. Shay examines the psychological devastation of war by comparing the soldiers of Homer’s Iliad with Vietnam veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Although the Iliad was written 27 centuries ago, it has much to teach about combat trauma, as do the more recent, compelling voices and experiences of Vietnam vets.

Revisado: 02-17-19
A good book. Not to minimize, but I think it has use for other traumatic situations. A must read for anyone with a soldier with P TSD in his family. Could have done without the author's gratuitous attack on Christianity based on a fundamental misunderstanding.

Historia
Over the past hundred years, scholars have attacked the historical truth of the Gospels and argued that they were originally anonymous and filled with contradictions. In The Case for Jesus, Brant Pitre taps in to the wells of Christian scripture, history, and tradition to ask and answer a number of different questions, including: If we don't know who wrote the Gospels, how can we trust them? How are the four Gospels different from other Gospels, such as the lost Gospel of "Q" and the Gospel of Thomas?

RVL meets Lee Strobel
Revisado: 02-12-19
I loved this book. Almost didn't read it since I had read Lee Strobel's The Case for Christ. I am so glad I did read this. I took two trips to Israel with Ray Vanderlaan and another GTi tour with Bruan Haynes. Petri brought it all together. Read it, you won't regret it!

Blood Highways is the heart-wrenching account of the biggest product liability case in history: the Ford-Firestone fiasco. At the center of the story are two people: Tab Turner, a charismatic trial attorney from Arkansas, who has made a career out of forcing Ford and other automakers to own up to knowingly trade human lives for profits; and Donna Bailey, a single mother and outdoor enthusiast who fought back from the brink of death to confront those ultimately responsible for her accident.

Drawing on their own cross cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.

Add my name to the chorus of approval. For those who bemoan biblical releativism, this book will bring a deeper meaning to the words "every tongue," "every nation," and "every knee." I feel closer to my worldwide brothers and sisters in Christ for having read it.
And for the open-minded sceptic, a much needed balm for the mind splinters lodged in your faith by culture-bound catechists. Praise the Lord for the authors, and the narrator was so good I would be tempted to buy any book just to hear his measured tones.
Bravo.
