Historia
From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans comes an unforgettable edge-of-your-seat mystery that is at once heartbreakingly tender and morally courageous about what it means to be human.

Historia
The murderee is Nicola Six, a "black hole" of sex and self-loathing who is intent on orchestrating her own extinction. The murderer may be Keith Talent, a violent lowlife whose only passions are pornography and darts; or the rich, honorable, and dimly romantic Guy Clinch. As Nicola leads her suitors towards the precipice, London--and, indeed, the whole world--seems to shamble after them in a corrosively funny novel of complexity and morality.

A blown -up short story.
Revisado: 06-25-23
Fun writing but not much happens between the first hour and the last hour. It is possible to excerpt great quotes that seem prophetic such as "nobody cares about truth anymore" but I didn't find anything here particularly revelatory. Clever writing at times but basically an uninteresting and monotonous plot. This supposed to be a satire, but I am not even sure what is supposed to be satirized here. Steven Pacey is a great reader.

pretentious not very believable
Revisado: 04-02-23
This book puts you through a lot of suffering and I didn't really see the point. Lots of flowery language and literary references that also seems artificial. This is the first of her books that I listened to and maybe it is not her best. As other reviewers pointed out it jumps around a bit again for no good reason and sometimes you can't figure out where you are.

Historia
This is Kazuo Ishiguro's profoundly compelling portrait of a butler named Stevens. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the "great gentleman," Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness," and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

Fabulous subtle story, great read.
Revisado: 03-13-23
If you liked Gentleman from Moscow, you will love this book. As in that book, all the real action happens off-stage but in this this book, the narrator of the story is unaware of the real story he is telling. It is magnificently subtle and engrossing. But you have to wait for it, this in not an action thriller but it is very deep.

Historia
In the India of 1942, two rapes take place simultaneously - that of an English girl in Mayapore, and that of India by the British. In each, physical violence, racial animosity, the coercion of the weak by the strong all play their part, but playing a part too are love, affection, loyalty, and recognition that the last division of all to be overcome is the colour of the skin.

Historia
In this world of bribes, vendettas, and swindling, in which heiresses are gambled and won, Trollope's characters embody all the vices: Lady Carbury is 'false from head to foot'; her son Felix has 'the instincts of a horse, not approaching the higher sympathies of a dog'; and Melmotte - the colossal figure who dominates the book - is a 'horrid, big, rich scoundrel...a bloated swindler...a vile city ruffian'. But as vile as he is, he is considered one of Trollope's greatest creations.

I love the way he tells an event in a few words and then analyzes it for pages. The opposite of the bang bang plot and action drill of many current novels.

Justine is the first volume in the Alexandria Quartet, four interlinked novels set in the sensuous, hot environment of Alexandria just before the Second World War. Within this polyglot setting of richly idiosyncratic characters is Justine, wild and intense, wife to the wealthy businessman Nessim, a Mari complaisant. Her emotional and sexual wildness fuels a highly charged atmosphere.

Historia
John Fowles’s The Magus was a literary landmark of the 1960s. Nicholas Urfe goes to a Greek island to teach at a private school and becomes enmeshed in curious happenings at the home of a mysterious Greek recluse, Maurice Conchis. Are these events, involving attractive young English sisters, just psychological games, or an elaborate joke, or more? Reality shifts as the story unfolds. The Magus reflected the issues of the 1960s perfectly, and it continues to create tension and concern today.

melodramatic story, terrible reading
Revisado: 09-28-21
This is far from Collin's best. It is a melodramatic tale spun out to fill pages. The story is interesting, however, in terms of champion women's rights. The reading is the worst I have ever heard from audible -- phony accents and terrible attempts to personify the characters. Bolen cannot even seem to read a simple sentence for meaning.
