Clearly a freshman effort
Revisado: 04-29-25
Narration was slow, I had to bump it up to 1.2 speed, which I never do. The story is about as generic as you could ask for. Character development is very thin. Leans heavily on the stereotypes represented by the characters. Looking at all the works by this author, the difference in cover style is sort of truth in advertising. The MC is unimpressive in every way, does nothing to earn the relationships that develop, and has no clue why they are developing. I saved this for last, you should too, but don't expect more of the same if you have experienced the authors later works.

Historia
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

The best LITRPG book and series
Revisado: 04-18-25
This book is on the long side for a first LITRPG, when I came back to listen again, I couldn't believe how much was packed into it. There's a lot of cleverness to the story and conflict. The progression is steady, and the powers interesting. Clearly the MC is special, and flawed, but he is entertaining. His friends are interesting; in fact you will probably feel you aren't getting enough of them. The whole series is worth a listen. The reviews show it's #1, and for good reason. I also liked DCC, but this story feels more grounded while still being amazing.

Historia
Since time immemorial the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace. Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy's shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels.

One of my favorite books.
Revisado: 04-18-25
So many interesting characters, banter, and character interactions in this one. The bar has fallen so low for fantasy with many of the high-volume web published books that come out these days. Jim Butcher is a great author, but this is his masterpiece in my mind. The humor in the book works on so many levels. I was amazed many people don't get it the way I did. Everyone I've had read it has loved it. It has the kind of perfection that can only be created in the first book of a series. The way the different sets of characters interact in a wide-ranging plot was just awesome for me. It's almost kid friendly, but don't expect that from the rest of the series or Jim Butcher's other books.

As far as I could tell she goes through this whole book hardly interacting with another living sole. That lack of character interaction was a deal killer for me. I did not finish, so your mileage may vary

Revisado: 02-25-25
A lot of new and interesting interactions between characters. Some threads that trace back to the start of the series pay off. I'm sad about how the dwarves enter the story, but that's fair game for the author. The spicy factor increased a bit.

Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Fun and somewhat crazy take on the LITRPG genre. I found it a bit silly at first after starting with the HWFWM series. But don't give up on it.

A solid, mostly solo level progression story
Revisado: 01-18-25
Does not hold a candle to the best in the genre. It is an interesting take on what seems a very vanilla power system directly derived from D&D character sheets. The main character is an athletic nerd and loaner, he leans into that hard. While the over all dynamic for the rest of the people taken to a new world with the main character is fleshed out with maybe 20 individuals described, the interaction with the main character is quite limited. I feel that was the main thing missing for me. HWFWM is the gold standard for me if that helps understand my perspective. I feel like it's going to take at least three books for this series to potentially start improving in terms of team building and friendships.

An interesting ride that doesn't reach a destination
Revisado: 01-12-25
This one started a bit slow. The plot is widening and this book, while revealing a lot more about NAIs, feels like the first half of a much longer book. I also feel the author is skirting the edge of credibility in this one with one of the side plots. I can accept very unlikely events setting up the start of the series, but adding in another seems like too much to maintain suspension of disbelief.
I felt that this book also lost me a bit with so many things moving around and coming and going on the technology side. I'm mainly feeling invested in the main character and the plight of the people in the two original systems from the first two books, This one largely ends in a cliff hanger across the board. So much needs to be resolved, and there's a lot of uncertainty as to the status of the external threats at the end. I hope the next book consolidates the situation a bit more.

It all started with the geese. The Firefly crew is eager to get paid for their latest job, but when payment arrives as a gaggle of geese instead of a purse, their stay on the planet Brome gets an indefinite extension. No matter that the geese will fetch a pretty penny once they get somewhere to sell them. Without coin, they can’t buy fuel, and without fuel, they can’t get offworld. Serenity is stuck.
