Historia
Here is the first full-length biography of a much maligned but astonishingly colourful Queen of England. In Newgate Street, in the city of London, stand the meagre ruins of Christ Church. On the same site once stood a royal mausoleum set to rival Westminster Abbey in the 14th century. Among the many crowned heads buried there was Isabella of France, Edward II's queen - one of the most notorious femme fatales in history. But how did she acquire her evil reputation? And is it justified?

History cannot be changed
Revisado: 07-09-21
Revisionist history par excellence! This queen’s story is important. This author, however, wants to tell history and write a novel in one book. There is no mystery in the author’s intentions since she tells us on page one she wants to somehow cleanup the queen’s reputation as a “she-wolf”. Isabel was a she-wolf, and that cannot change.
This approach leads to endless phrases and terms such as: it must have been, probably, should have been, surely it must mean, it is possible that…., perhaps she meant to…
That is not history. This is apologia in a straight jacket. The woman killed her husband. He slept with men and that was reason enough to depose him. She fornicated with Mortimer, but that was love. Her husband’s favorites wrecked the kingdom, as did her lover with her approval and support. They were all killed. Her lover was hanged by her son.
Feminist reading is all well and good, but like any other reading, it can go overboard. And this book does, unfortunately. Dump it and read an ‘authentic’ history; the period deserves it.

Historia
The gritty business of politics is not something we usually associate with the occult. But esoteric beliefs have influenced the destiny of nations since the time of ancient Egypt and China, when decisions of state were based on portents and astrology, to today, when presidents and prime ministers privately consult self-proclaimed seers. Politics and the Occult offers a lively history of this enduring phenomenon. A few of the fascinating topics include the fate of the Knights Templar and the medieval Gnostic Cathars, the occult roots of America and the French Revolution in Freemasonry, Gurdjieff and the swastika, and much more.

Suspend judgment
Revisado: 02-26-21
When listening to American narrators, one has to be patient with the pronunciation of foreign words or names. But when the narrator grossly mispronounces English names time and time again, the matter becomes rather serious. The names of two known writers are mispronounced throughout. Leigh and Baigent are such two. One is pronounced lay the other as bi-gent. I will not go into French or other words. If you can stomach this anomaly, then the book is mildly interesting.

Historia
Cyrus Spitama, grandson of the prophet Zoroaster and lifelong friend of Xerxes, spent most of his life as Persian ambassador for the great king Darius. He traveled to India, where he discussed nirvana with Buddha, and to the warring states of Cathay, where he learned of Tao from Master Li and fished on the riverbank with Confucius. Now blind and aged in Athens - the Athens of Pericles, Sophocles, Thucydides, Herodotus, and Socrates - Cyrus recounts his days as he strives to resolve the fundamental questions that have guided his life’s journeys.

Spectacular
Revisado: 03-06-20
Having read this book twice before, it was a pleasure to hear it read to me. Vidal goes without the recognition he deserves. That takes away nothing from his brilliance. If for nothing else, his asides on the tongue of The narrator(s) are worth the time and money. We all owe the Master a debt of gratitude and be happy the he does not have to suffer the incoherence of Trump.

James was a vegetarian, wore only linen clothing, bathed daily at dawn in cold water, and was a life-long Nazirite. In this profound and provocative work of scholarly detection, eminent biblical scholar Robert Eisenman introduces a startling theory about the identity of James - the brother of Jesus - who was almost entirely marginalized in the New Testament.

Best in its field. The research is overpowering. It really puts the newish generation of Biblical scholars to shame., not to mention their shallow populist approach introduced to this world by Dan Brown.

Historia
This landmark book, first published in 1978, remains one of the most influential books in the Social Sciences, particularly Ethnic Studies and Postcolonialism. Said is best known for describing and critiquing "Orientalism", which he perceived as a constellation of false assumptions underlying Western attitudes toward the East. In Orientalism Said claimed a "subtle and persistent Eurocentric prejudice against Arabo-Islamic peoples and their culture."

Historia
In the years before the First World War, the great European powers were ruled by three first cousins: King George V of Britain, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Together, they presided over the last years of dynastic Europe and the outbreak of the most destructive war the world had ever seen, a war that set twentieth-century Europe on course to be the most violent continent in the history of the world.

Excellent
Revisado: 12-02-16
The details are informative. What might sound like gossip to the lay reader is actually a brutal expose of petty dynastic squabbles that led to millions being killed. One extended family probably killed more than the Roman Empire managed in a thousand years of war. Hats of to the author. The reader's voice and tone matched the written words perfectly.

Central Asians achieved signal breakthroughs in astronomy, mathematics, geology, medicine, chemistry, music, social science, philosophy, and theology, among other subjects.

History vs google
Revisado: 11-28-16
Apart from expecting the next sentence you hear to be: And God came from Central Asia, the information gathering (not scholarship) is impressive.
One example. To claim that Ahmad bin Hanbal as hailing from central asia, is like claiming that Jesus was an Egyptian just because he was taken there as a child.
