This is not like the two previous novellas in the series; it isn’t full of action and humor and ridiculous situations. This is the slowest of romances, alternately cozy and tragic, and sometimes both at once. Ultimately, it is worth it, for characters and readers alike.

Save this until you’ve finished all the other books in the 5 series in this time line, and savor it. Or listen to it on your commute and blame your reddened eyes on allergies, as I did.

Let’s be honest. If you read or listened to Changeless, you probably went looking for this book 3.5 seconds later.
For those caught by the cliff in book 2, be reassured that all will be answered, amidst murderous vampires, monstrous humans, deadly lady bugs, an unfortunate orange gown, and a great deal of pesto.

With great narration and the same skillful plotting, characterization, and world building as the first two novels in the series, this story takes Merrit, Hulda, and Owein to London. Danger, intrigue, and the chance for Owein to be human again set high stakes.

There are clear plot points left open, signaling that a fourth novel is in our future, but no cliffhangers.

Victorian England with elemental magic

This novel deals with classism and women’s rights (few!) in Victorian England. Women have just been permitted to own property, even if married, but a single, working class woman has limited options. For Rebecca, the refusal of the local Guild of Wrights to acknowledge her mastery leaves her on the edge of poverty. David, a Full Wright, has his own story of hardship, and initial hostility between the two gives way to grudging respect, then friendship as they fight for fairness in a society that does not value it.

CW: domestic abuse, off screen, both implicit and explicit.

This sequel to ‘Miss Bennet’s Dragon’ takes off where volume one ended. (Read that book first!). Lizzy and Darcy have come to London, where Mary and Georgiana hold a salon on music and women’s rights. Into this comes Miss Emma Woodhouse, a young woman of good family and theoretical wealth (stolen by her brother in law), and possessed of three secrets. And likely four, although we will not learn the last in this volume: why does Emma believe that she cannot bind a draca?
Emma is actually sympathetic, Harriet has a backbone, and Mr. Knightly is almost completely unlike the original character. This, and a plot involving magic, betrayal, creatures out of legend, treason, war, and bad decisions by good people, makes this a compelling read. It is very dark, but lit with beauty. It mixes love and sacrifice with tragedy and courage. You may hate this book at times, you may throw it across the room, and you will probably cry if books can make you do so…but you will not be sorry you read it, and I nearly guarantee that you will read the next.

The audio is well done, with good distinctions between the characters, and flows easily.

Highly recommended.

Lovely Sapphic Romance

Anna is 27, a rising star in Pop Music, with a supportive family and an ex lover from hell. Eden is 36, 20 years into her career as a Pop Goddess, with a good relationship with her ex husband and a not-estranged-enough relationship with her controlling and narcissistic parents. Each has issues, but as attraction gives way to friendship, collaboration, and love, the most beautiful music of all is what they make together.

Anna has so much more lived experience than Eden that the age gap is barely a factor. Anna is openly pansexual, while Eden always believed she was straight. (She comes across as Demi sexual, but it is not stated.)

Good supporting characters and an interesting glimpse into the world of celebrities round out a beautiful story. The narrator is excellent.

Beth Cato weaves not just a story, but a world. The brilliant narrator keeps voices of different genders, cultures, and species distinct and memorable. The characters breathe, and the story is urgent yet replete with subtext. A coming of age tale, a homecoming, a story of love and loss and sacrifice, this is also a story of what it is to be human.

Start with book one, and be prepared to be enthralled.

This second and concluding novel in Tinkled Pink has higher stakes. Unlike Phoebe, who was not a good person at the beginning, Tavi is a good person trying to make the world better, and her grandmother’s megalomania is more cruel than funny in consequence. With themes of the love and forgiveness we owe ourselves, found family, and being true to ourselves, this is a satisfying romance made richer by the history in book one.
