Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Horrible Narration
Revisado: 03-19-24
With 2 hrs and 16 minutes left on the book, I could no longer stand the narrator and abandoned listening. He is unbearable, acting like a Shakespearian actor to try and add his own dramatization to the book. He even gives a dramatic interpretation when he announces the Chapters. Someone should inform him that it is not his job to add his extra flair to the story..

Historia
General George S. Patton, Jr., died under mysterious circumstances in the months following the end of World War II. For almost 70 years, there has been suspicion that his death was not an accident - and may very well have been an act of assassination. Killing Patton will take listeners inside the final year of the war and recount the events surrounding Patton's tragic demise, naming names of the many powerful individuals who wanted him silenced.

Compelling Story
Revisado: 11-20-23
This book held my interest from beginning to end. I found myself picking it up to read or listen to (I got the book in Audible and in hardback) whenever an opportunity presented itself. Unfortunately, Bill O'Reilly made the fatal mistake of doing his own narration. Whether it is due to ego or cheapness, it is almost always a mistake for the author to read their own book. Being a good narrator is a special skillset that authors do not usually possess. O''Reilly is no exception

Historia
Volume One of Stalin begins and ends in January 1928 as Stalin boards a train bound for Siberia, about to embark upon the greatest gamble of his political life. He is now the ruler of the largest country in the world, but a poor and backward one, far behind the great capitalist countries in industrial and military power, encircled on all sides. In Siberia, Stalin conceives of the largest program of social reengineering ever attempted.

Too much minutia
Revisado: 01-29-23
The author has done a tremendous job of research, but makes the mistake of thinking he has to give the reader every little detail, even if those details subtract from rather than add to the story.

Historia
Although he took command of the Army of the Potomac only three days before the first shots were fired at Gettysburg, Union general George G. Meade guided his forces to victory in the Civil War's most pivotal battle. Commentators often dismiss Meade when discussing the great leaders of the Civil War. But in this long-anticipated book, Kent Masterson Brown draws on an expansive archive to reappraise Meade's leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Boring
Revisado: 11-02-22
For every two pieces of interesting information, you have to wade through eight pieces of minutia. I kept thinking it would get better, but it did not and I quit half way through.

Historia
Bankers, philanthropists, scholars, socialites, artists, and politicians, the Warburgs stood at the pinnacle of German (and, later, German American) Jewry. They forged economic dynasties, built mansions and estates, assembled libraries, endowed charities, and advised a German kaiser and two American presidents. But their very success made the Warburgs lightning rods for anti-Semitism, and their sense of patriotism became increasingly dangerous in a Germany that had declared Jews the enemy.

Worth Reading
Revisado: 03-02-22
I enjoyed this book and learned quite a bit about banking, German Jews and the Warburgs. Chernow was particularly good at developing the personalities of the various Warburgs, although there were so many of them that it was hard to follow who was who, especially when you throw in wives and daughters. He was not so adept at explaining how the Warburgs made their money. The book The House of Rothchild by Neil Ferguson is much better about explaining how a rich banking family made its money, but not so good about developing the personalities. Also, I found the narrator to be quite acceptable.

In this large, comprehensive, revelatory biography, Jane de Hart explores the central experiences that crucially shaped Ginsburg’s passion for justice, her advocacy for gender equality, her meticulous jurisprudence: her desire to make We the People more united and our union more perfect. At the heart of her story and abiding beliefs - her Jewish background. Tikkun olam, the Hebrew injunction to “repair the world”, with its profound meaning for a young girl who grew up during the Holocaust and World War II.

Only OK
Revisado: 05-18-19
Although I enjoyed getting to know about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the author spends too much time on legalese and too little time on Ruth herself. "First", about Sandra Day O'Conner does a better job of balancing the two.

Historia
The definitive biography of Herbert Hoover, one of the most remarkable Americans of the 20th century - a revisionist account that will forever change the way Americans understand the man, his presidency, and his battle against the Great Depression. A poor orphan who built a fortune, a great humanitarian, a president elected in a landslide and then routed in the next election, arguably the father of both New Deal liberalism and modern conservatism - Herbert Hoover is also one of our least understood presidents.

Excellent
Revisado: 11-14-18
This is a well-written, well-read book. I was sorry to have it end. I knew very little about Charles de Gaulle before listening to this book, but now feel I know him intimately. He was a very contrarian, difficult person, but always had the interests of France at heart, as he saw those interests. In this day of nationalism in the US and around the world, we only need to look back to de Gaulle to see a nationalist with vision.

Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

Real Downer
Revisado: 05-31-18
I am 75% of the way through this book and cannot stand it for one minute longer. It is the biggest downer I have ever read. The husband, Oliver Ward, is the biggest looser in history and I am sick of all his mishaps, errors in judgement and just plain stupid decisions he makes that work for his high principals, but make all those around him suffer. He is so egocentric it is sickening. Poor Susan to get stuck with this dud, but she should have known he was a self-righteous, self-centered jerk when he put his revolver and knife on her dresser when courting her in her delicate, aristocratic, eastern enclave. She should have used it to shoot him instead of marrying him.
