Historia
Being a highly sensitive person means you’re probably highly misunderstood and you may feel like you’re too empathetic for your own good. Your intuition and empathy create situations where you always put others first and say “yes” to everything, regardless of how you feel or what you need. As a result, you end up in unhealthy relationship dynamics that leave you exhausted, resentful, and stressed.

Empowering

I enjoyed this book. It is validating and empowering and also offers helpful advice. This would be especially valuable for someone who recently found out they are an HSP.

Historia
Erika Krouse has one of those faces. “I don’t know why I’m telling you this,” people say, spilling confessions. In fall 2002, Erika accepts a new contract job investigating lawsuits as a private investigator. The role seems perfect for her, but she quickly realizes she has no idea what she’s doing. Then a lawyer named Grayson assigns her to investigate a sexual assault, a college student who was attacked by football players and recruits at a party a year earlier. Erika knows she should turn the assignment down.

Love this author
Revisado: 04-08-22
I have been hoping Erika Krouse would write a memoir like this ever since I read an article of hers years ago about her experience private investigator. This book did not disappoint. I found myself addicted to it, despite the sometimes disturbing topics and ways she is treated that I found deeply unsettling. It’s a powerful story that weaves personal narrative with details of the case she is working on and I loved every minute, even those that hurt or made me angry at the injustice of some people’s treatment of others.

Samantha Raymond's life has begun to come apart: her mother is ill, her teenage daughter is increasingly remote, and at fifty-two she finds herself staring into "the Mids"—that hour of supreme wakefulness between three and four in the morning in which women of a certain age suddenly find themselves contemplating motherhood, mortality, and, in this case, the state of our unraveling nation.

Not my cup of tea
Revisado: 01-17-22
This book is well written, but overall I didn’t care for it. I don’t want to give any spoilers, so I will just say there is an event in the book that seems to come out of nowhere then disappear without conclusion or any attachment to the rest of the story that I could find. I also felt a disconnect from the characters’ emotions. I had trouble figuring out what, if anything, they were feeling a lot of the time. It’s

Historia
When Kate wins an item at her children’s elementary school auction - an all-inclusive trip to SeaView at Sandpiper Bay - she thinks it’s just what her family needs after a decade of career disappointments and a marriage on its last legs. She has no reason to believe that said trip is a Fyre Festival-level fraud and, in fact, the catalyst to her unraveling. But it is. Oh, but it is.

Felt like an entitled woman whining, which is I guess what it was aiming for. I found it difficult to finish. Christina Applegate does a wonderful performance, though.

Historia
In 1850s London, the Great Exhibition is being erected in Hyde Park, and among the crowd watching the dazzling spectacle, two people meet by happenstance. For Iris, an arrestingly attractive aspiring artist, it is a brief and forgettable moment, but for Silas, a curiosity collector enchanted by all things strange and beautiful, the meeting marks a new beginning. When Iris is asked to model for Pre-Raphaelite artist Louis Frost, she agrees on the condition that he will also teach her to paint. She has no idea that evil is waiting in the shadows.

Historia
From the introduction by Les Standiford: "The truth is that Miami, though naturally lovely, is a frontier town, perched on the border between the known and the rarely before experienced. The poet Richard Hugo once said that the natural place for the writer was on the edge, and 'edge' might well be the definitive word when it comes to this city... We are not only on the edge of the continent, we are to this country what New York was in Ellis Island's heyday, what the West Coast was in the middle of the 20th century.

Historia
As a young college graduate a year into treatment with a psychiatrist, Cree LeFavour began to organize her days around the cruel, compulsive logic of self-harm: With each newly lit cigarette, the world would drop away as her focus narrowed on the fierce, blooming release of pleasure-pain as the burning tip was applied to an unblemished patch of skin. Her body was a canvas of cruelty, each scar a mark of pride and shame.

Good but distant
Revisado: 08-06-17
Beautiful writing. Very focused on the relationship with the therapist, which was interesting. There was a certain distance to it that I can't put my finger on. She would describe emotional motives in abstract ways. I like the book and it's worth the listen, but it lacked a certain depth that these types of memoirs typically have for me.

Interesting but it felt braggy in several parts, a bit mystical in others. I found myself not able to really believe everything. The writer established an authoritative background, but I didn't trust her account of things.
