Historia
In March 1865, the long and bitter War between the States is winding down. Till now, 23-year-old Simon Boudlin has evaded military duty thanks to his slight stature, youthful appearance, and utter lack of compunction about bending the truth. But following a barroom brawl in Victoria, Texas, Simon finds himself conscripted, however belatedly, into the Confederate Army. Luckily his talent with a fiddle gets him a comparatively easy position in a regimental band.

A wonderful tale
Revisado: 06-06-22
From the beginning you know you are in for a treat. A story of friendship between soldiers, men that didn’t want to be soldiers but were encrypted into duty. Beautifully written and narrated without a flaw. This is a book I will read again when I recommend it to my book club. We all need a good love story now and again

Historia
"With the roar of thunder and the speed of a galloping horse comes the tide to Mont St. Michel", goes the old nursery song. So when the aged patriarch of the du Rocher family falls victim to the perilous tide, even the old man's family accepts the verdict of accidental drowning. But too quickly, this "accident" is followed by a bizarre discovery in the ancient du Rocher chateau: a human skeleton, wrapped in butcher paper, beneath the old stone flooring. Professor Gideon Oliver, lecturing on forensic anthropology at nearby St. Malo, is asked to examine the bones.

Historia
Deep in the primeval rainforest of Washington state's Olympic Peninsula, the skeletal remains of a murdered man are discovered. And a strange, unsettling tale begins to unfold, for forensic anthropologist Gideon Oliver determines that the murder weapon was a primitive bone spear of a type not seen for the last 10,000 years. And whoever - or whatever - hurled it did so with seemingly superhuman force. Bigfoot "sightings" immediately crop up, but Gideon is not buying them.

I really enjoyed this story. I live in Sequim and of course love to read about my area. This is the 3rd book in this series that I have read after randomly choosing two other titles, I thought I may as well start at the beginning and read through the series. I love a good mystery.

Historia
Set in the London of the 1660s and of the early 21st century, The Weight of Ink is the interwoven tale of two women of remarkable intellect: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just before the plague hits the city, and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history. As the novel opens, Helen has been summoned by a former student to view a cache of 17th-century Jewish documents newly discovered in his home during a renovation.

I very much enjoyed this story. At times I thought there may have been too much dialogue but on reflecting back on the story I see it was important. I particularly liked the relationship of Aaron and Helen and how she helped him in the end. Well done.

Historia
In his final hours in the Oval Office, the outgoing President grants a controversial last-minute pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal prison. What no one knows is that the President issues the pardon only after receiving enormous pressure from the CIA. It seems Backman, in his power broker heyday, may have obtained secrets that compromise the world’s most sophisticated satellite surveillance system.

Historia
On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual false alarm. As one fireman recounted later, “Once that first stack got going, it was good-bye, Charlie.” The fire was disastrous: It reached 2,000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed 400,000 books and damaged 700,000 more.

The importance of the Library
Revisado: 06-19-20
I have to admit that I haven’t given much thought to libraries in a very long time. This book has changed my perception dramatically. Not only for the obvious reasons of the educational value but the more subtle issues of giving people a place to be. I was fascinated by the history of the library in our country and I felt like Susan Orlean did an excellent job educating the readers.

Grabs your attention from the beginning
Revisado: 04-28-20
I was reluctant to read another book about World War Two but this one caught me up immediately. I still shake my head on the horrors that the Jews went through and how the country supported Hitler and all the atrocities he was responsible for. This book will touch your heart with the determination of a few who were willing to stand alone to fight and to protect.

What a magnificent case of characters
Revisado: 04-13-20
I reread several parts of this story. I was fascinated by the intrigue and the remarkable description of the characters. The range of accents and voice inflections by Mark Meadows really enhanced the tale. However the landscape of that part of the world did not entice me to want to live there.

Historia
In the summer of 1937, Amelia Earhart is the most famous woman in the world - a record-breaking pilot, a best-selling author, and a modern woman shattering the glass ceiling in the early days of aviation. And then she vanishes. In Tampa, Florida, 15-year-old Lizzie Friedlander spends her afternoons glued to her father’s radio, tapping into the enormity of a world she longs to travel. Lizzie can hardly believe her ears when she picks up a radio signal from a faraway source that sets her heart racing: “Amelia Earhart calling SOS!”

Historia
Monsieur Perdu calls himself a literary apothecary. From his floating bookstore in a barge on the Seine, he prescribes novels for the hardships of life. Using his intuitive feel for the exact book a reader needs, Perdu mends broken hearts and souls. The only person he can't seem to heal through literature is himself; he's still haunted by heartbreak after his great love disappeared. She left him with only a letter, which he has never opened.

Good but a little tedious

I got a little tired of Perdue's wining over most of the whole book. I enjoyed the story but I think it could have been brought to conclusion a little sooner.
