Is there anything you would change about this book?

The whole tone of the story. I believe Ivan Doig focused on the ill-concieved town and how it brought out the crude and selfishness in human nature. I grew fond of Gros Ventre and the very human inhabitants of that small town and Scotch Heaven, but the Fort Peck project seemed to collect an entirely different population that permeated "Bucking the Sun" with ugliness.
I strongly recommend Mr. Doig's other Montana books, from "House of Sky" through the Jick trilogy to "Whistling Season" and "The Bartender's Tale". I hope he revisits that Montana again. I have read and listened to"English Creek" several times and intend to hear it again.

What do you think your next listen will be?

A book that doesn't pander to the perception that you must have lots of sex, viiolence and other gratitous violence to be successful

What three words best describe Tom Stechschulte’s voice?

In "Bucking The Sun" his voice has a slightly sarcastic ring that fits the book.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Definitely not

Any additional comments?

Don't let this negative review deter you from listening or reading Ivan Doig. I think he is a gem among the flashy rhinestones. I cannot overestimate his writing talent and knowledge of his people and their environment.

Would you consider the audio edition of Ride with Me, Mariah Montana to be better than the print version?

I have read & listened to "Ride with Me..." and though I enjoyed both experiences, Scott Sower's voice gave the story a life not found in the printed version.

What did you like best about this story?

"English Creek", the predecessor to "Ride with Me, Mariah Montana", was one of those rare novels that spoke to me-I found I identified with Jick. I think Ivan Doig did a great job of portraying Jick in his later years, tying him to the young Jick in "English Creek" and showing how life had shaped him.

What about Scott Sowers’s performance did you like?

He was Jick in my mind!

If you could take any character from Ride with Me, Mariah Montana out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Jick of course. I would like to hear more about his younger years and the wonderful characters that shaped "English Creek"...Dode Withrow, Canada Dan, Toussaint Rennie, and the tragic Stanley.

Any additional comments?

Listen to all three books. If nothing else, "English Creek".. and "the Bartenders Tale"

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really. Mark Twain's wit loses its value when not backed up by real substance.

If you’ve listened to books by Mark Twain before, how does this one compare?

It lacks the depth of Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer and doesn't have the continuity of Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's court

Which character – as performed by Grover Gardner – was your favorite?

none in particular

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

no
