Historia
How a Michigan farm boy became the richest man in America is a classic, almost mythic tale, but never before has Henry Ford's outsized genius been brought to life so vividly as it is in this engaging and superbly researched biography. The real Henry Ford was a tangle of contradictions. He set off the consumer revolution by producing a car affordable to the masses, all the while lamenting the moral toll exacted by consumerism.

The book is not is chronological and is repetitive.
Revisado: 05-13-24
I noticed that the author covered Ford's fight against the FDR's unconditional 'National Recovery Act' as if Ford was wrong, and his Ideas about how to 'Fix' the Hoover / Roosevelt "Great Depression" were loony. Even though what Ford recommend was what his, and other companies had done during the 1920 recession. That was not covered in the story at all, along with the Harding administration ending nearly all of Wilson's "War Socialism Programs", reducing size of the Federal government and it's spending allowed the US Capitolist Economy to fix itself in just a few months! and that lead to the 'Roaring Twenty's'. 3 stars are a bit high.

Historia
There is a world that hangs suspended between triumph and catastrophe, between the dismantling of the Wall and the fall of the Twin Towers, frozen in the shadow of suicide terrorism and global financial collapse. Such a world requires a firm hand and a guiding light. But does it need the Concern: an all-powerful organization with a malevolent presiding genius, pervasive influence and numberless invisible operatives in possession of extraordinary powers?

but Mr. Banks political views were troweled on a bit thick, without the wit and finesse of the "Culture" books.

Historia
Charles Darwin is arguably the most influential scientist of all time. His Origin of Species forever changed our concept of the world’s creation. Darwin’s revolutionary career is the perfect vehicle for historian Paul Johnson. Marked by the insightful observation, spectacular wit, and highly readable prose for which Johnson is so well regarded, Darwin brings the gentleman-scientist and his times brilliantly into focus. From Darwin’s birth into great fortune to his voyage aboard the Beagle, to the long-delayed publication of his masterpiece, Johnson delves into what made this Victorian gentleman into a visionary scientist.

Historia
Ronald Reagan today is a conservative icon, celebrated for transforming the American domestic agenda and playing a crucial part in ending communism in the Soviet Union. In his masterful new biography, H. W. Brands argues that Reagan, along with FDR, was the most consequential president of the 20th century. Reagan took office at a time when the public sector, after a half century of New Deal liberalism, was widely perceived as bloated and inefficient, an impediment to personal liberty.

A warped view of Reagan thru an MSM filter.
Revisado: 11-26-21
I lived thru, and was politically aware, for the whole Reagan eara, so it was obvious, to me, that the slant and much of this hack job was taken directly from the editorial pages of the: NY Times, Washington Post, and the COX Communications Corp. Papers and the Alphabet broadcast Media of the Reagan eara.
Tha author also filled many of his numerous ridiculously short chapters with hackneyed historical outlines that sounded as if they produced by The "History" Channel or PBS/NPR for use at Democrat Party functions.
This is by far the Worst biography I have listened to!
It is so poorly edited it impossible follow a consistan time line because the auther jumps back and forth from one failure to the next Media hypped "Scandal".
He also padded the book's many chapters with of verbatim transcriptions of: testimony, depositions, and "Summit Meeting minutes!
It does Not even rate one star!

From tales of chivalrous knights to the barbarity of trial by ordeal, no era has been a greater source of awe, horror, and wonder than the Middle Ages. In handsomely crafted prose and with the grace and authority of his extraordinary gift for narrative history, William Manchester leads us from a civilization tottering on the brink of collapse to the grandeur of its rebirth, the Renaissance.

'A Peoples "History" of The Dark Ages'
Revisado: 07-03-21
This book is ludicrous from it's title on "A World lit only by Fire" should include everything from prehistoric times thru about 1890 AD!
The author may have been attempting to 'cash-in' on Howard Zinn's very popular Soviet- era 'Propagandized' sudo-history of the US. The author states as much in his long afterword, where he claims that "...this is not a work of scholarship...", but a "...kaleidoscope..." of his own views of the 15th & 16th Centuries.
This is bourn out by the authors ignorance of the source wealth of one of the richest man who ever lived Jakob Fugger, that being his family's dominance/monopoly over the Brenner pass from Italy to Bavaria. also that the Ptolemaic rulers of Egypt were Greeks!
It also seamed that the author based all his writing, in this book, about Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation from Jesuit Propaganda from the Vatican 'Counter Reformation.
All of the above was even more irritating because of the narrator's inability to correctly pronounce some Common names and words; Jakob Fugger as Jacube Fourgar and The Diet of Worms as The Deate Vourms!
I am glad the book was at no cost from the 'Plus Catalog'!

Historia
Most history is hierarchical: it's about emperors, presidents, prime ministers, and field marshals. It's about states, armies, and corporations. It's about orders from on high. Even history "from below" is often about trade unions and workers' parties. But what if that's simply because hierarchical institutions create the archives that historians rely on? What if we are missing the informal, less well documented social networks that are the true sources of power and drivers of change?

A Book Useful for Leftist Mental Onanism.
Revisado: 02-10-21
In the introduction, the author goes to great lengths (About 5 minutes) to establish his position as a 'Nonpartisem' and Nonpolitical, Historian free of biases of the academic community, but later, still in the introduction, he uses the example of; "The International Hedgefund manager, Financier and Philanthropist; George Sours..." being the center of a Sinister Web, using his l Billions for nefarious deeds! As an example of a ridiculous internet hox. I was surprised at this DNC party line view. I was shocked, while still in the Introduction, he related the whole DNC / H.R. Clinton Campagne fabricated "Russian Hacking Hox" as a FACT verified by ALL of the American 'Intelligence' Organizations. Granted this book was written in 2017 and he is obviously still in shock at Donald J. Trump's victory. The book's short chapters are in turn made up of historical 'Thum-nails' some interesting and informative but many, not so much; an example; That the Antibabtiest's hated both Lutherans and Roman Catholics because both had the same beliefs about the sacrament of communion! Also, the first part of the book is not useful in the Audio format because of the lack of the necessary 'Charts and Graphs necessary to understand his theories of networks. The author seems to be using this book to introduce his two-volume Bio of Henery Kissenger. I can not but wonder what the author's thoughts are in light of the last 18 to 20 months. I only recommend it in the historical context of more authoritative sources, and then NOT as an 'Audio' book!

A restoration Wilson's 'Democrat Sainthood'.
Revisado: 01-11-21
This book, from the Introduction thru the last word is an attempt to refute the last 20 years of actual factual scholarship on the life and administration of the last President of United States that was raised by Black Slaves as servants 'Rented' by the churches his father preached at.
The book Glosses over his Racism and contempt for our Constitution and Republican form of Government.
The author goes so far as to put late 20th/21st Century terms in Wilson's mouth; quoting him as saying "...Aferican Americans..." rather then Negros or more likely the now forbidden "N" word which was, I believe, the term he normally used to refer to All Black Americans!
This Book is a sad attempt to restore Woodrow Wilson's Democrat Party Secular Sainthood.

From one of the leading critics of leftist orientations comes a study of the thinkers who have most influenced the attitudes of the New Left. Beginning with a ruthless analysis of New Leftism and concluding with a critique of the key strands in its thinking, Roger Scruton conducts a reappraisal of such major left-wing thinkers as E. P. Thompson, Ronald Dworkin, R. D. Laing, Jurgen Habermas, Gyorgy Lukacs, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jacques Derrida, Slavoj Žižek, Ralph Milliband, and Eric Hobsbawm. Scruton delivers a critique of modern left-wing thinking.

Historia
In this book, the first to draw from recently released archives, Robert Conquest gives us Stalin as a child and student; as a revolutionary and communist theoretician; as a political animal skilled in amassing power and absolutely ruthless in maintaining it. He presents the landmarks of Stalin's rule: the clash with Lenin; collectivization; the Great Terror; the Nazi-Soviet pact and the Nazi-Soviet war; the anti-Semitic campaign that preceded his death; and the legacy he left behind.

A Portrait of a Lovecraftian Human Monster
Revisado: 08-30-20
Mr. Conquest's book fills out the few blank places in the "Dorian Gray" like portrait of this monstrous creature J.V. Stalin, painted in Simon Sebag Montefiore's two-volume works; "Young Stalin" and "STALIN, THE COURT OF THE RED STAR" that I had listened too last month. These three books, along with Victor Sebestyen's "LENIN" and A. Solzhenitsyn's "The Gulag Archipelago" are my sources of understanding the first half of the twentieth century concerning the Soviet Union. I recommend Mr. Conquest's book as a "Quicker" but still comprehensive study of this "Breaker of Nations": Joseph V. Stalin.
