Historia
Dupont University: the Olympian halls of learning housing the cream of America's youth, the roseate Gothic spires and manicured lawns suffused with tradition....Or so it appears to beautiful, brilliant Charlotte Simmons, a sheltered freshman from North Carolina, who has come here on full scholarship. But Charlotte soon learns, to her mounting dismay, that for the upper-crust coeds of Dupont, sex, Cool, and kegs trump academic achievement every time.

The best audio book ever
Revisado: 12-01-07
Ok, this is it, the Mona Lisa, the Mount Everest, the Bill Gates of audiobooks. I've got around 2.3 million audiobooks in my library and this is the best one by far. The writing is sublime -- hilarious beyond belief and completely absorbing.
And the narration? Perfect from word one. I simply can't reccomend this book more strongly.

In this far-reaching narrative, Weisman explains how our massive infrastructure would collapse and vanish without human presence; which everyday items may become immortalized as fossils; why some of our earliest buildings might be the last architecture left; and how plastic, bronze sculpture, and man-made molecules may be our lasting gifts to the universe.

How can you mess this up
Revisado: 12-01-07
The subject at hand is limitlessly interesting, but the author's treatment of it drags a bit -- i wanted it to be more Mad Max, and the first chapter is, but by the end of it there was a real disconnect for me.

Historia
For two thousand years, cadavers have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

Worth it
Revisado: 12-01-07
I hoped this would be great, but it was merely good. Hearing about death is tough sometimes, esp. when you realize the things she's describing are going to happen to your own dear self someday. But there is a habit on her part to crack wise incessantly. A joke or two here and there is welcome, even in the morgue, but at times it was like watching a Robin Williams interview -- the jokes quickly became cloying. The subject matter, however, kept me engaged.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

This books is over 5,000 hours long, but man, it's worth every second. How the author keeps this as interesting as she does is a literary miracle. Just superb.

Historia
"This book is in part a detective story. After 9/11 I knew, if I needed further reinforcement, that we are living in a new world - the world of a global capitalist economy that is vastly more flexible, resilient, open, self-correcting, and fast-changing than it was even a quarter century earlier. It's a world that presents us with enormous new possibilities but also enormous new challenges. The Age of Turbulence is my attempt to understand the nature of this new world." (Alan Greenspan)

Good up to a point
Revisado: 12-01-07
This book can be divided into 2 parts -- Alan Greenspan's interesting tenure as a Very Important Person and Alan Greenspan's lectures on what's wrong with society today.
The former is fascinating -- he was center stage for a heap of fascinating political ephochs and gives us the skinny on Nixon, Clinton, GW 1 and GW2. He's candid, non-partisan and engaging.
But then, about 3/4's of the way through the book, he goes off the rails and starts caterwauling about what's wrong with the world today. It begins to feel like a lecture series given by a grumpy professor.
That said, the first part makes it worth the credit.

Amazing
Revisado: 12-01-07
This one is a stunner, from beginning to end. It's got actors and production music and the story is simply a masterpiece. This could have been 10 x the length it was and I wouldn't have minded a bit.

Historia
Music can move us to the heights or depths of emotion. It can persuade us to buy something, or remind us of our first date. It can lift us out of depression when nothing else can. It can get us dancing to its beat. But the power of music goes much, much further. Indeed, music occupies more areas of our brain than language does - humans are a musical species.

Lame
Revisado: 12-01-07
I thought this book was going to be about cool hearing disorders -- becoming a maestro after having a car accident etc, but there is precious little of dat in here. The focus is entirely on the minutiae of ringing ears and the dissapointingly mudane disorder known as the auditory hallucination. Snore.

OOOOWWWEEEE
Revisado: 12-01-07
Man, the King can write, can't he? From word one, I was hooked. You know when you buy a really good watermelon at the store? You get home, cut that sucka up, take a tentative hopeful first bite and then sit back and think 'I am in good hands.' That's what I felt like hearing this book -- it's got everything -- great characters, incredible plot, just enough outlandish fantasy to keep things Kingesque.

Ugh
Revisado: 12-01-07
It started out OK -- i was vaguely amused through say the first hour or so, but the book started to drag like a lame pony pretty quickly. On and on it went, dry description after dry description.
John Grisham just lost a potential fan, something I'm sure he's not going to lose sleep over as he seems to have 4.5 billion left.

This audiobook is the window into the underground world of cheating at the highest levels, which set off a frenzy of activity and hand-wringing in the offices of Major League Baseball and Congress. Through the authors' pursuit of sources and documents, they were able to open for public view a world in which elite athletes trade money and risk their health for the edge that will allow them to run faster, hit harder, and compete longer, and then cash in on the fame and wealth.

Game of Shadows is audio book crack -- I was mesmerized from beginning to end. My only caveat would be -- if you love sports, the revelations in this book are gonna hurt.
Great narration too -- amazing how important that is.
