Historia
Before Jodie Rattler became a star, she was a girl growing up in St. Louis. One day in 1955, when she was just six years old, her uncle Drew took her to the racetrack, where she got lucky—and the roll of two-dollar bills she won has never since left her side. Jodie thrived in the warmth of her extended family, and then—through a combination of hard work and serendipity—she started a singing career, which catapulted her from St. Louis to New York City, from the English countryside to the tropical beaches of St. Thomas, from Cleveland to Los Angeles and back again.

Jane, you can do better.
Revisado: 05-29-24
this book is like that friend you like but they can't tell you a story without adding every detail about every meal they ate, dress they wore, and retelling every conversation. After 8 hours I gave up waiting for the story arc. At least this book serves the purpose of helping me fall asleep.

filling time till my next credit comes
Revisado: 07-14-22
Can't complain too much when it's a free book. There is nothing terrible about this book. There is also nothing compelling. I could not care about these characters. And it took way too long to slog through the back story to get to the predictable conclusion. The narration was fine except for the whiny little voice of the 5 year old.

Violeta comes into the world on a stormy day in 1920, the first girl in a family with five boisterous sons. From the start, her life is marked by extraordinary events, for the ripples of the Great War are still being felt, even as the Spanish flu arrives on the shores of her South American homeland almost at the moment of her birth.

Second try - still dissapointed
Revisado: 03-19-22
There are readers and there are story tellers. Unfortunately the narrator of this book is the former. The first time I tried to listen, I gave up. Given my love for the author, I tried again. I was able to get over my distaste for the narrator, thinking her weird inflection might be because English is her second language (just a guess) but it was still annoying. And to be fair, Allende didn't give her much to work with. The book is a meandering recollection and somewhat recycled from her previous works. This book felt like the author needed the requisite pandemic publication and threw this together. No real story line. Forgettable. 😒

Historia
Louise Erdrich's latest novel, The Sentence, asks what we owe to the living, the dead, to the reader and to the book. A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store's most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls' Day, but she simply won't leave the store. Tookie, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading "with murderous attention", must solve the mystery of this haunting.

Pulitzer worthy again!
Revisado: 12-06-21
This is a love story. love of books, love of children, love of a partner, love of native culture. It is also a first (at least for me) literary depiction of the covid pandemic. Louise Erdrich introduced the pandemic and the murder of George Floyd stunningly, surprisingly and sadly as if it were just happening, which I suppose it was a she wrote this novel. It was not easy to go there; perhaps it is too raw to revisit those early days just yet but to my mind this is her best and most important writing yet. I can't wait to tackle the reading list she included with the book.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is 77 years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa's best and only friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

Revisado: 04-09-17
I didn't take the time to get into "A Man Called Ove" and after seeing the film I was sorry. This book kept popping up in my recommended list and I am so glad that I decided to listen.
I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed reading it as much. The narration was as near to perfect as possible. It was the perfect story to listen to during a week spent mostly in bed with a bad bronchitis. Elsa was a wonderful companion as she wove the story around the fairy tales her grandma created from her storied life and some lifted Harry Potter magic, all the while navigating through life's not always pretty circumstanes.
This is an excellent book for anyone, from YA listeners to grandmas.

Historia
Moonglow unfolds as the deathbed confession, made to his grandson, of a man the narrator refers to only as "my grandfather". It is a tale of madness, of war and adventure, of sex and desire and ordinary love, of existential doubt and model rocketry, of the shining aspirations and demonic underpinnings of American technological accomplishment at midcentury, and, above all, of the destructive impact - and the creative power - of the keeping of secrets and the telling of lies.

I really wanted to love your new book, Michael Chabon.
Revisado: 12-01-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrative meanders along with no discernible direction. This book reminds me of "A Soldier of the Great War," another meandering book of beautiful prose with no story that jumps out and grabs your interest. perhaps if I am able to get through the next 10 hours of Moonglow, I will find the point of the story. I like books that move back and forth through time, but this one is too disjointed.
Would you ever listen to anything by Michael Chabon again?
Absolutely! I am a big fan of his previous works.
What three words best describe George Newbern’s voice?
Nasal and boring
Do you think Moonglow needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. There isn't a story line to continue.
Any additional comments?
i hated to write this and perhaps I shouldn't have because I am unable to plow through the whole book. Chabon writes beautiful prose, but this book is disjointed to the point that I am unable to appreciate the story he is trying to tell.
