Historia
By the time he was 30, Dr. Benjamin Rush had signed the Declaration of Independence, edited Common Sense, toured Europe as Benjamin Franklin’s protégé, and become John Adams’s confidant, and was soon to be appointed Washington’s surgeon general. And as with the greatest Revolutionary minds, Rush was only just beginning his role in 1776 in the American experiment.

Benjamin Rush is one of my husband's relatives. I have heard stories from the family and have always been interested in the history of our country. This book is informative as well as interesting.

Historia
Golden Globe-winning actor Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) performs Truman Capote's masterstroke about a young writer's charmed fascination with his unorthodox neighbor, the "American geisha" Holly Golightly. Holly - a World War II-era society girl in her late teens - survives via socialization, attending parties and restaurants with men from the wealthy upper class who also provide her with money and expensive gifts. Over the course of the novella, the seemingly shallow Holly slowly opens up to the curious protagonist.

Historia
Sixteenth-century Europe was a hostile world dominated by court politics and patriarchal structures–and yet against all odds, two women rose to power: Elizabeth I and Catherine de Medici. Much has been written about these shrewd and strategic sovereigns, but though their l legacies have been heavily scrutinized, nothing has been said of their complicated relationship—thirty years of camaraderie, competition, and conflict that forever changed the face of Europe.

Interesting & Entertaining
Revisado: 03-11-23
The narration by Anna Wilson-Jones is clear & well spoken. Her voice is soothing and easy to understand. I often speed up the narration on most books, but this one is great "as is" and I feel no need to change it.
I enjoy reading nonfiction about Elizabeth I and have several books about her life. This is a great addition to my library. Plus, I get the chance to learn about another person from a historical perspective and not from an entertainment point of view.

Historia
With Princess Sultana's Circle, the extraordinary story of Princess Sultana continues. The forced marriage of Sultana's niece to a cruel and depraved older man, and Sultana's discovery of the harem of sex slaves kept by a royal cousin, makes this brave royal princess more determined than ever to fight the oppression of women in Saudi Arabia. Princess Sultana's cause is given an extra sense of urgency against the background of increased dissent against the Al Sa'uds, and the looming specter of Islamic fundamentalism.

Revisado: 05-17-21
I think one thing that jumps out at me is that the law isn't "just" until we understand it applies to ALL people. It doesn't matter if you live in a country & are part of the ruling class, the laws of your country still apply. Slavery of any kind is wrong, we cannot buy people.
Princess Sultana finally found her true voice, now she needs to continue to use it.

Historia
Princess describes the life of Princess Sultana Al Sa'ud, a princess in the royal house of Saudi Arabia. Hidden behind her black veil, she is a prisoner, jailed by her father, her husband, and her country. Sultana tells of appalling oppressions, everyday occurrences that in any other culture would be seen as shocking human rights violations: 13-year-old girls forced to marry men five times their age; young women killed by drowning, stoning, or isolation in the "women's room". Princess is a testimony to a woman of indomitable spirit and courage.

My husband & I have lived in this country for several years. It is interesting to hear a royal princess tell her view of the same country/cities we experienced. Her life is different, yet much the same as most women there. Though, she has drivers & servants.
The people are kind & caring. I was helped in the suq several times by local women when choosing thread or fabric.
I enjoyed this story very much.

Historia
History has lied. Anne Boleyn has been sold to us as a dark figure, a scheming seductress who bewitched Henry VIII into divorcing his queen and his church in an unprecedented display of passion. Quite the tragic love story, right? Wrong. In this electrifying exposé, Hayley Nolan explores for the first time the full, uncensored evidence of Anne Boleyn’s life and relationship with Henry VIII, revealing the shocking suppression of a powerful woman.

Revisado: 04-19-21
A story well researched is interesting , but the sarcastic humor added into the history of it makes it amazing.
Poor Ann Boleyn, so slighted in most of history as a fickle woman. I hope more historians will do their due diligence & look again.
I've read many books about Elizabeth I, but this is a first about her mother. Thank you.

Historia
"Life changes fast....You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends." These were among the first words Joan Didion wrote in January 2004. Her daughter was lying unconscious in an intensive care unit, a victim of pneumonia and septic shock. Her husband, John Gregory Dunne, was dead. The night before New Year's Eve, while they were sitting down to dinner, he suffered a massive and fatal coronary. The two had lived and worked side by side for nearly 40 years.

grief & its companion elements
Revisado: 01-15-21
I read, then listened to, this book with thoughts of myself. Our grief over a loss in our lives is personal to us, yet it touches everyone in their own personal way. The faith involved is personal as well. Faith in God, faith in self, in someone or something else, gives us a place to start when grief begins. Personally, I don't believe grief ends, it just gets easier to deal with.
The author guides us through part of her grief while telling us what happened. Sometimes in a technical way, sometimes in a more personal way. How it happened isn't the most important part, but how it mattered to her is.
I enjoyed this book. The performance shows a range of emotion that makes you feel the story just as much as the words tell it.
