I’ve read the other titles in the Ranger’s Apprentice series and felt they were getting a little formulaic towards the end, though I do love this author’s style. I avoided this book for quite a while. Turned out to be a good story, and while some **SPOILER ALERT** initial elements seemed completely implausible, such as the king & queen disowning/disinheriting their daughter due to bratty behavior, king & queen allowing their only heir to be sent away & apprenticed in a career that had little to do with her probable future, main character suddenly suddenly capitulating and becoming a meek, compliant teen, king & queen allowing their virginal daughter to live alone, long-term, with a man in his 30s—admittedly this is a fictional world and anything is possible, but it strained credulity.
The story dragged somewhat in the middle. Still, it had some real humor, fun moments and some great character development, and a pretty good plot line. Would recommend.

The premise was good—a wealthy woman finds herself suddenly penniless when her husband dies, he having not changed his longstanding will to include her. She finds herself the hapless victim in her employer’s web of illegal activities and is threatened with prison. So far, so good. Character development was not bad. But the story felt as though the author had established this framework and was filling it in with fluff. She kept harping repeatedly on the basics: main character cannot BELIEVE this has happened! She felt like she was in a bad dream! She was losing the HOUSE! Woe is me! Over and over again. A good editing would have deleted all that repetition, but the reader would have been left with about fifteen pages of actual storyline. It was a pretty tedious read.

Typical holiday romance fare. Characters fun, interesting, well- rounded. Dialogue realistic. Just couldn’t get into all the sex.

Heyer always does a nice job. We-rounded characters, interesting situations. I could tell where this was going from the first, though, and it kind of dragged on.

Common Georgette fare. This story has more than its share of crusty, irascible, unreasonable characters—I found it tiresome but suppose it was on purpose.
What I had a hard time with was the narrator, who did a great job on everything except one thing: the voice he used for Cherry, one of the main characters. I know it can be hard to create a range of voices to represent each character, and I know it can be especially difficult to represent a member of the opposite sex. But every time he voiced Cherry I just cringed—instead of an innocent schoolgirl, she sounded like Rue Paul. Just not the thing. Other than that this was a pretty good story.

I’ve liked most of this author’s works, but this was not one of her stronger offerings. **SPOILERS**
Intriguing premise of a young woman in desperate straits choosing to marry a scoundrel on his deathbed, for a variety of benefits. Complications ensue.
That’s all fine, but the rest of it seemed vastly contrived. Storyline too weak. Way too much chattering, way too much complaining about how ill-used the title character was, leading up to, of course, the romantic marriage proposal at the end—what a shockeroo (NOT).
It wasn’t a complete waste of time, but it was disappointing.

Narrator good, nice range, nice delivery. Story pretty good. But this is typical Agatha Raisin fare, and maybe I just lack the maturity to appreciate a heroine who’s a little too human, at least for my taste. She always seems so menopausal, overly emotional, overly competitive, always getting jealous of younger, prettier women. How is that a fun read?

I liked the premise, having an errand to purchase precious old quilts. I get it that this was a bedtime story, and meant to create a cozy meandering boredom-that part was successful. It just felt like it was pretending to be something it wasn’t: hypnotic. The author’s voice got slower and huskier, but to me it wasn’t mesmerizing; just annoying. Sorry, not for me.

Georgette Heyer does it again! Memorable characters with some depth, interesting premise. Lots and lots of antiquated slang—fun!
It moved a bit slowly, especially the last quarter, but in general it was quite a romp. Narration was top-notch.

Genuinely suspenseful, nice pacing. Multiple POVs kept this thing interesting, unfolding its secrets inch by inch. There were three or four possible perpetrators and I couldn’t predict for sure who it was until the very end—how often does that happen? Story climax did not disappoint.
Alas, the author did resort to a few very silly plot devices, leading the main characters into absurd, unnecessary danger toward the end. Think badly written horror movies: “Hey! Isn’t that the haunted house where the murderer is supposed to be hiding? Let’s go explore it now, in the middle of the night, with no lights or weapons. Good thing nobody knows where we are!”
Sheesh.
The very end, likewise, was a little crummy this way.
Otherwise it was a fun read.
