Solid Story, Excellent VA, Very Little Nonsense

After listening to a few books with frustrating characters and infuriating plot lines, this was a welcome surprise. I listened through most of the book in 2-3 sittings, and I can't recall a time when I had to pause and scream internally at the stupidity of the plot. I'll admit this was not something that you might consider revolutionary, but it was solid story that kept you listening and just close enough to the edge that it was hard to put down.

The characters are reasonable and likeable; it's hard not to root for them. I felt like I was on the same plane as the main characters and received new information as they did. Within the context of the story, major characters of the story mostly approach things with critical thinking and analysis. If you're looking for a story that glorifies the "headstrong idiots with a lot of plot armor", this is definitely not that. Otherwise, give this a chance, you'll likely enjoy it.

One criticism of the book would be the lack of world building from a technical perspective. The story is focused largely on the inter-personal and inter-group conflicts, and there is almost no "future tech" as part of the main plot. Also, at least at the end of the first book, the villains seem to be of a certain stereotype. I could be wrong though, since there hasn't been too much revealed about the underlying plot yet.

Overall, this was a compelling story that respects the readers and the characters in the book. It was definitely worth my time.

Story Suffered From Being So Short

Solid narration and audio work. The content, on the other hand, could have been a lot better.

Setting aside the context and purpose of the story, this is quite flat. Nothing is subtle, everything comes at you full blast. The story is like a frayed piece of cloth. There is little to no background set up, it's starts somewhere in the middle and stops somewhere in the middle. If you like that kind of storytelling, where you just get a momentary glimpse of the world in the story, then this may be up your alley.

Considering the context and subject matter, I wish this was a proper story instead. If the purpose was to appeal to people who don't understand the consequences of the anti-abortion movement, then I'm not sure it does anything for that. None of the characters are relatable or complex. By the end of the story, I am not left pondering the fate of the primary characters, or asking myself deeper questions about the morality of forcing women to carry to term. It felt like what you and a few like-minded friends might banter about on a random evening. Not unlike a circle-jerk.

The book was a fun listen for the most part. The story was contained with a small cast of characters and good back and forth between them. There are a few plot holes and many things left up to the imagination, but it didn't detract too much from the plot. That is up to about eight hours in the book. The last two and a half hours were a total mess. Not just "everything is going haywire" mess, but the "frantically trying to wrap up the story" kind of mess. The good pace of the book is suddenly replaced with a rushed pace, jumping from bullet point to bullet point, and a few dues ex machina moments that just feel hollow. Towards the end, the book straight up feels like a Disney princess story. Don't waste your time on this if you're looking for something deep and cerebral. It has it's moments, but on the whole it reads like a standard shoujo manga.

Honestly, I only picked up this title because I like the narrator. The story isn't bad, but just isn't far off the beaten path. The monologues can be a little cringe at times, and the world building is adequate at best. None of this was bad enough for me to want to stop listening though. My main gripe with the writing is that there is too much explanation of events and virtually no use of subtlety. Dots that most, if not all, readers can connect on their own are explained in detail.

The concept of letting a female member into an all male club is handled in quite a hamfisted manner with more tropes than I care to list here. The antagonist are cartoonishly bad and the final fight of the book feels straight out of a shonen manga. Power fantasy is abundant and difficult moral questions are non-existent. The main character is held high above all else and always seems to have the answers. The camaraderie with supporting characters (named and otherwise) is superficial at best. There are many "life and death" situations in the book, but they rarely feel like it.

The book was worth a listen on the side while doing something else, but it didn't draw me into the world. I'm not sure I feel compelled to listen to the sequel.

This is YA fiction, and if you know that going in, it is a fun read/listen. The setting/world is interesting, but the overall story line (at least in this book so far) is not groundbreaking or anything. Overall, the world building is okay, barring the inexplicable abundance of Carly Rae Jepsen. It was jarring every time it came up, like running into C3PO in Mordor. Also, the subject of sexual orientation could be covered a little more subtly, but that's arguable at best. Parts of the story and dialogue are annoying and cringe, but it makes sense given the characters are all adolescents.

The interactions between characters in the main cast were kind of predictable and largely ineffectual to the plot. There's not as much character development in this book, rather the readers are discovering the characters. I hope the next books, assuming most of the characters will stay, shows the main cast change and grow. Speaking of next book, the last third of the book does a lot of foreshadowing for where the story may be going next.

The narration was fine in general, buy difference in characters wasn't always obvious. With so many different characters taking up sizable amounts of screen time, the voices sometimes bleed over and it is hard to tell who was saying the lines.

The book is full of choppy sentences and strangely descriptive words, but it feels just right in the context of the story. The narration was really well done, and made listening to the book a pleasure. The story has tension, it has fun, it has mystery. It was a journey well worth my money and time. Listen to it in one sitting if you can.

One of the few things I didn't like as much would be that in the last few chapters, it lacks internal consistency. But no means did that makes the book less fun though. My only other complaint is that there wasn't more of it.

This is a story that is not often told, a story about the women and men who collect and analyze weather data. It was well narrated, and it kept me listening for those two and half hours.
