Solid if not intrusive narration
Revisado: 01-09-24
The narrator is very good but his flaw is that he allows his interpretation get in the way of the characters at times, especially when it comes to infusing them all with accents. Kettricken comes to mind first, where the performance brings to mind Christopher Walken doing an absurd caricature of Hercule Poirot. It’s just too much. Chade’s Scottish brogue stands out as well and defies logic. Why is he the lone Character in buckkeep to speak with such an accent?

Historia
Finding Ultra is Rich Roll's incredible but true account of achieving one of the most awe-inspiring midlife physical transformations ever. One evening in 2006, before turning 40, Rich experienced a chilling glimpse of his future. Nearly 50 pounds overweight at the time and unable to climb the stairs without stopping, he plunged into a new way of eating that made processed foods off-limits and prioritized plant nutrition and daily training. Rich morphed - in mere months - from out-of-shape midlifer to endurance machine. Revised and updated edition with a new and original foreword and a bonus chapter.

Mastery of the humble brag!!!
- De Ruth Calisch en 06-21-18
Worthwhile listen, not entirely relatable
Revisado: 06-28-18
While it’s impressive that Rich Roll overcame alcohol addiction and turned himself into an elite endurance athlete, he can be hard to relate to. He seems to be a person who is always addicted his pursuits, whether it be his trademark “plant power diet” (which he endorses a bit too much) or risking all his finances to run in races of enormously long distance for not much purpose. Luckily it worked out for him in the long run and he’s able to essentially self-promote for a living thanks to social media and the like. I do admire his success, but there is a certain lack of humility in this story that is annoying. I find he’s a bit too quick to ascribe his success to his plant diet and following his dreams, and not quick enough to be like “ok, so maybe it helps that I was an Olympic level athlete in college.” Nevertheless, Roll is an interesting guy who has a lot of interesting things to say. I personally just like to take him with a grain of salt (is salt allowed on the plant power diet?)
The performance would have benefitted from a professional narrator as well.

Fantastic resource
Revisado: 06-27-18
I learned tons of helpful things to improve my running through this book. Learned that I am constantly overtraining on my easy days which makes it impossible to have enough energy in the hard days. Helped me figure out why I’ve plateaued lately. Highly recommend to any runner.

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Didn’t like the narrator
Revisado: 12-05-17
Grover Gardner’s strong nasally affect annoyed me throughout this audiobook. Female character’s all sound like old fashioned damsel’s in distress (maybe not helped by the writing), and 75% of the males have the same southern drawl that sounds a bit too on the nose. I enjoyed the book a lot more the times I switched to my eBook.
As for the story, I enjoyed it, but it was a mixed bag. The first act is strong and compelling but the middle is bloated and boring, and feels ultimately a bit pointless. Hours of pages about committees and city planning could have been cut out and add nothing to the story.
There are some strong characters here but all the female characters are one-dimensional afterthoughts. Frannie, one of the main characters, reacts to most moments of adversity with tears and fainting. Feels like an old movie.
Confused why so many consider this Stephen King’s best work. I read IT right before this and found it to be far superior.

Gripping, infuriating, educational
Revisado: 07-20-17
Mozhan Marno's narration is fantastic and adds a great deal to the immersion of this audiobook. Scott Brick's mere 5 minutes of narration is nauseating and irritating, however, and Krakauer needs to stop working with him. He has an arrogant and smarmy affect that never seems to emphasize the correct beats and is hugely distracting. I will be avoiding all his work in the future.
The book itself is enlightening and has helped me understand a topic that I now realize I didn't know much about. Most interesting and disheartening to me is the ease with which the public takes sides in these cases without even attempting to learn of the details, sometimes going as far as to villify victims when the alleged rapist has in fact admitted to the crime.
