Superb in every respect
Revisado: 10-21-24
The characters and complex social interactions in the book are so highly developed. The dialog is outstanding. The Audible version is one of best narrator performances I’ve heard.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Exhaustingly bad
Revisado: 12-05-23
Only for thick skinned romance novel readers quasi trained to overlook the book’s obnoxiously juvenile relationship dynamics for the sake of the thrill of following the details of a crippling infatuation. (There are kindergartners with greater maturity than the protagonist.)
An unusually crass exploitation of the fantasy genre, full of thinly recycled, minimally developed ideas from better books. This is the nadir of the genre, its Da Vinci Code: an exercise in heartless, soulless, loveless writing solely for the sales.
I wish I had not exposed myself to a book so careless and so mercenary, wish I could completely scrub it from my memory. If I could, I would do much to be allowed to forget this book: it put me in touch with deep new wellsprings of regret about my life choices, about living in a world whose brokenness produces books like this.
Also, I did not like it.

Historia
A long line had formed for the standing-room-only section of the Woffington Theatre. London’s favorite musical comedy of the past two years was finishing its run at the end of the week. Suddenly, the line began to move, forming a wedge before the open doors as hopeful theatergoers nudged their way forward. But one man, his head sunk down upon his chest, slowly sank to his knees and then, still more slowly, keeled over on his face. Thinking he had fainted, a spectator moved to help, but recoiled in horror from what lay before him.

Well read, unusual case.
Revisado: 05-28-23
Tey started her Grant series with distilled meditation on what a criminal case is supposed to be about: discerning the truth based on evidence.

The first book in the best-selling series that has garnered over a million fans across the globe. Retired homicide detective Thomas Prescott is reluctant to read the bestselling true-crime thriller, Eight in October. After all, it was his case, and he doesn’t need to be reminded of the gruesome details. The book dubbed the serial killer, Tristen Grayer, The MAINEiac. Grayer is allegedly dead, but only Prescott knows the truth: Grayer is alive and lurking in the shadows.

Extremely juvenile
Revisado: 03-17-23
The protagonist, Thomas Prescott, has the maturity of a badly socialized 13 year old. Extremely off-putting.

Historia
England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of 20 years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?

One of the best novels I’ve encountered
Revisado: 02-17-23
The Audible performance is superb. This was such a stunning “read”. Watching the television adaptation, which is much condensed, was very helpful for orienting to what is a very long story with very many characters, BTW.
