Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Written for a tween boy
Revisado: 12-29-23
Let me start by saying I thoroughly enjoy Scalzi books, Like Agent to the Stars, Lock In, Old Man's War, etc, but this book was terrible! I enjoy listening to Wil Wheaton read Scalzi books because he brimgs the perfect amount of sarcasm into the telling of the stories. Unfortunately, this book feels like they consulted a group of junior high school boys for dialog and plot points. I was so disappointed since the premise behind the story is something all, true, sci-fi fans have laughed at for years. Sadly, this explanation of being a Red Shirt was awful. I got to the CODA, and had to return the title. The story was just too forced.

Historia
They are coming. The countdown has begun. First visible only as blips on a telescope image, the discovery of objects approaching from Jupiter's orbit immediately sets humanity on edge. NASA doesn't even bother to deny the alien ships' existence. The popular Astral space app (broadcasting from the far side of the moon and accessible by anyone with Internet) has already shown the populace what is coming.

Not worth the credit
Revisado: 05-21-23
I had no sympathy for the main characters and thought they were stereotypical caricatures. I found myself annoyed by their comments and thoughts. The story moves at a snail's pace and, as every other review mentions, there is no real contact with aliens. I only stuck with it because of Ray Porter.

Tedious
Revisado: 04-06-23
The storytelling did not engage me, the narration was slow and monotonous, and I tried to listen with the hope it would pick-up eventually. I am very disappointed with this audiobook.

There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

Mediocre
Revisado: 11-04-22
The story was not particularly engaging and I never connected with any of the characters. The narration was too "breathy" for my liking and I would not purchase another book by the same narrator. Would not recommend but that is just my opinion.

Really wanted to like it
Revisado: 09-12-22
I am an avid rpg gamer and this book had so much potential for fun and adventure. However, it sounds like I was written by a 12 year old boy. Not worth the credit.

Couldn't finish
Revisado: 08-31-22
Story was rambling and tedious. Ibwas unable to finish it. Thought I would like it because I enjoyed a previous book by the same author. Just because you can write a book doesn't mean you should. Wish I could get a refund.

Tedious and not worth the money
Revisado: 01-26-22
This interpretation of the classic is not my cup of tea. It starts slowly and is droll throughout. I listened through chapter 11 hoping it would pick up a little, but could not waste any more time on something which is not enjoyable. The narration was fine.

Good story but the narration is distracting
Revisado: 10-17-21
The story is enjoyable. I found the narration made most characters sound like a female Eeyore was reading the book, especially Sloan. I would listen to other books by this author but pass on those narrated by the same person.

Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

Reads like a high school English assignment
Revisado: 10-09-21
The story sounds as if it is written by a high school student who needs to increase their word count by adding superfluous adjectives. It is a very disappointing story and I never got to chapter 3 - I tried to like it.

Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn’t belong. Not with his mother’s new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father’s wife. Not at school, where he’s an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he’s tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who’s introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

Painfully Slow
Revisado: 05-13-21
I listened to it at 1.5x speed so I could get through it faster. It was an annoying story with Raymond's insecure and self centered thoughts intruding on the story constantly. It smothers the narrative. The book seemed more like a person's agenda rather than the telling of a good story.
